While Jerry Jones is busy trying to fill out his coaching staff for next season and getting ready for the NFL Draft, there is something lurking in the midst. For many years he has been the face of the Dallas Cowboys franchise and hailed as Superman, but even Superman came to an unexpected and tragic end against his comic book foe, Doomsday.
Is our own Superman heading for the same tragic ending as the man of steel?
He who was once so highly favored by Cowboys fans everywhere, has now become the target of the fan's scorn and criticism. And while I believe much of this is unwarranted and unjustified, the natives are certainly getting restless, whenever the name Roy Williams is uttered.
This past week, much of the discussions on Cowboys blogs everywhere has been centered around the financial burden that Roy Williams' contract now has on the team.
Roy Williams is scheduled to count $6.667 million against the cap in 2008 and about the same in 2009. Even if they were to cut him (something that has not been ruled out), he would still count for millions against the cap because most of the contract was paid as a signing bonus. Ouch!
Trading him is out of the question, because no team would be willing to take on a contract like that... at least not in this world, but in Metropolis anything is possible.
Despite the realization that Jerry Jones may have stuck the team with a bad contractual obligation, you can't blame Williams for taking the best deal he could get. Wouldn't we do the same thing in his place?
The fact of the matter is that Roy Williams is stuck with us, and we are stuck with him. So why not make the best of the situation?
Greg Ellis won this season's Comeback Player of the Year Award at the ripe old age of 32. Who is to say that the 27-year old Roy Williams can't do the same thing next season?
Shouldn't we cut him some slack after all of the years of loyalty, hard work and excitement he has provided to our team?
The city of Metropolis would never turn their back on their Superman. Why can't the great city of Dallas do the same?
I know it's easy to love a player when he's riding high, and sour on him when the going gets tough. What I'm suggesting is that we give Roy Williams the opportunity to fight through this slump with the support of all Cowboys fans.
There is no telling how much we can achieve when we are all united and aspiring for the same goal. Let us not become his kryptonite.

Anybody else besides me who didn't want to get out of bed this morning? I mean Mondays typically suck any way, but this one was especially sucky. What can be worse for a Cowboys fan than a New York Giants - New England Patriots Superbowl?
Obviously I hate Patriots because they handed us our first loss of the season, but the Giants... well I've always hated them long before they beat us two Sundays ago in our playoff loss.
After that loss, I felt like I didn't really care who went on to the Superbowl...
I guess I was wrong because a San Diego - Green Bay Superbowl would not have rubbed me the wrong way like this matchup does.
Now I find myself in a can't win situation and a huge dilemna...
I don't want the Patriots to win because then we'll never stop hearing about their damned undefeated record.
I don't want the Giants to win because then I'll feel even worse wondering what if Patrick Crayton had caught one of those passes...
What a conundrum...
Now I know how Charlie Brown feels every time Lucy pulls the football away whenever he lines up and runs toward the ball to kick it.

Sporting News listed Cowboys SS Roy Williams one of the NFL's dirtiest players.
The magazine polled 107 players on the subject. Roy was far from winning -- a distant third to runaway winner Rodney Harrison -- but did garner a quote in the story.
"Everybody knows the horse-collar tackle is a penalty," one NFC offensive lineman told TSN. "But he continues to do it."
Here's the top 10:
1. Patriots SS Rodney Harrison: 31 votes 2. Rams G Richie Incognito: 8 3. Cowboys SS Roy Williams: 6.5 4. Eagles RT Jon Runyan: 5 5. Dolphins OLB Joey Porter: 4 6. Any Broncos offensive lineman: 4 7. Broncos C Tom Nalen: 3 8. Lions DE Dewayne White: 3 9. Raiders DT Warren Sapp: 3 10. Steelers WR Hines Ward: 2.5
After a season which saw Roy Williams lose much of his shine, Cowboys fans are left to wonder what the safety position holds for the future. Williams' has already stated that he will change his uniform number from 31 to 38 next season, but I think most fans are hoping that he changes and improves his play instead.
It's tough to be critical of someone who has been the face of the franchise for so long. Ironically, all those Roy Williams jerseys hanging in our closets have just become outdated. The question is this...
Is anybody running out to replace it with a Roy Williams - 38 jersey?

For most fans no amount of money or even the allure of a new job or promotion, can convince us to renounce our loyalty to the Dallas Cowboys. Once a Cowboys fan, always a Cowboys fan, 'nuff said!
All too often we find that players and coaches don't share that same allegiance to their teams. Who would of thought in a million years that we would ever see Emmitt Smith wearing an Arizona Cardinals uniform? And yet that is exactly what we saw. Of course, Emmitt came to his senses and eventually signed a one day contract with Dallas so that he could retire as a Cowboy, but you get my drift.
In only the rarest of cases do players in any sport exhibit the kind of loyalty to a team that a fan bestows. The answer why is quite simple, to them it's a job and to us it's a passion. How quickly would you leave your job if a competitive company offered you double your salary, a company car and a fancy new title?
And yet, every now and then somebody comes along and decides to put fame and fortune aside in the name of loyalty.
Jason Garrett is one of those rare athletes. Most of us remember Jason as our long time backup quarterback from 1993 to 1999. He served as a backup to Troy Aikman and proved his value to the team on one very memorable Thanksgiving Day.
In 1994, he started in place of an injured Troy Aikman, and spearheaded an amazing second half comeback over Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers to beat them 42-31. Garrett threw for 311 yards and had two key touchdowns in the game. It was a classic shootout between two of the NFL's best teams and featured favre in his prime. The win set the tone for the rest of the season as we beat Green Bay again in the playoffs as we went on our way to another Super Bowl title.
When Jerry Jones brought Jason Garrett back at the beginning of the season as the offensive coordinator, I was thrilled to see him back where he belonged. As the season came to a sad end for the Cowboys, I feared we would surely lose him to another team after leading an offense that was ranked first in the NFC.
When the offers began pouring in I thought he was as good as gone.
Jason Garrett turned down coaching opportunities in Baltimore and Atlanta to remain in Dallas. He was rewarded by Jerry Jones with a new title of assistant head coach and received a nice raise.
Call me crazy, but I have a hunch that when all is said and done, that one day Garrett will look back at a great coaching career that will include a few more Super Bowl titles for the Cowboys. When you have a coach who loves his team and is as passionate about the organization as a fan is, you just know you have someone special.
Jason Garrett is a special guy, and it won't be long before he shows all of us just how special he really is.
I still believe!

Much has been said about the contrasting styles between Bill Parcells and Wade Phillips this season. Many Cowboys fans went as far as calling the current configuration of the team Parcell's team. I'm not one of them.
Now that I have had some time to reflect on what transpired this past Sunday, I got to thinking and couldn't help wondering... what if...
While I love Wade Phillips and his laid back style, I often wondered if that style can work against you when it's time to really turn on the afterburners.
I don't believe for one moment that the Cowboys would have done as well in the regular season with the brash and hot-tempered style of Bill Parcells.
But I gotta tell ya, when it's really crunch time and Playoffs football is finally here, I almost want to get rid of the laid back style that got us here, and turn up the dial on the attitude and the intensity, and nobody does that better than Bill Parcells.
What do you think?
Considering that the Cowboys out-possessed New York 36:30 to 23:30, and out-gained the Giants in yardage 336 to 230, don't you think the Cowboys deserved a better fate?
Would Bill Parcells had made a difference?
Heck we even spent the last four or five minutes of the game scrambling around their territory and couldn't even get into the end zone once...
Like I said, I'm not knocking Wade Phillips and the fact he is 0-4 in the post season, but I just can't help wondering if things would have been any different with Bill Parcells... or Jimmy Johnson... or Tom Landry...

It looks like Wade Phillips and Tony Romo will have to wait at least one more year before they get their first post season win.
What started out as a remarkable and historic season for the Dallas Cowboys, suddenly came crashing down in Texas Stadium as they lost to the New York Giants 21-17.
The Cowboys, who had tied a franchise record with a 13-3 regular season record were the number one seed in the NFC, but played nothing like it during their last four games, including this afternoons NFC Divisional Playoff loss.
There was plenty of blame to go around, but I'm sure many will put most of the blame squarely on the shoulders of Tony Romo, un-deservingly so. Although Romo lost his composure and was completely in panic mode halfway through the fourth quarter, it seemed like the offensive line hung him out to dry.
There were many other things we can point to ranging from a truckload of penalties, numerous dropped passes, and plenty of miscues and mistakes.
All of these things will be hotly debated in the weeks to come, but lets all try to remember all the great moments in a season that was full of them
It's times like these that can really test the loyalty of a fan. It's easy to show your team colors when your team is winning, but a true fan shows that enthusiasm even during the darkest of days. Those are the fans that keep us hanging on.
Let's give tribute to all those Cowboys who played their hearts out this season and were recognized by the NFL for their excellence. Maybe the individual successes of our twelve Pro Bowlers will give us new hope for next season when we see them again in Hawaii.
I for one am damn proud of the Cowboys. I will turn away from this game with some sadness, but I know that we are young and strong and have the makings of a dynasty. It would have been nice to start that dynasty with a post season win today, but I know that there will be plenty of post season wins in the next few years.
I still believe!

What is it about The Patriots that really makes me sick?
Well it's not just one thing, it's several, and no it's not because they have a talented line-up.
For one thing they seem to play the game with such malice. It seems like they tackle and hit like they want to injure and maim the opposition, not just stop the progress of the football.
They also seem to take pot shots at the opposition with late hits and illegal tackles, and they get away with it more often than not. In those rare instances when the do get penalized they scream and jump and cry like no other team I've ever seen.
They have so many trick plays that they use whenever the game is tied or the other team has a lead. Sure, other teams can do those same things but they don't. Tonight for example when they pulled off that Statue of Liberty play I wanted to throw something at my TV.
Whenever they make a tackle rather then getting slowly up from the ground like most teams, they jump up and try and make another one and usually do.
What I hate most is their arrogant coach Bill Belichick. He makes me sick. Despite having such a solid team he still tried to cheat until he got caught, and all he got was a slap on the wrist. He stands at the sideline and shouts profanities at everyone including his own players. Even when he is up by 25 with seconds left in the game, he is relentless to a fault showing no respect for the other team or decency for the game. I just hate the guy.
It may very well be that the Cowboys will face them in the Super Bowl. I hope that they were watching tonight. I hope they saw how unstoppable that offensive line was. Nobody could even touch Tom Brady. I know De Marcus Ware, Greg Ellis and Chris Canty will not let that happen.
A team with a good offense can hang with them. However, they must avoid mental mistakes and stupid penalties. Nobody takes advantage of penalties more than the Patriots. That means no late hits, no pass interference, and no unnecessary roughness. I implore Wade Phillips to get this message into the teams mind set.
You have to prepare like you never have before. These guys are beatable but you have to be smarter than them and be ready for anything, and I do mean anything.
I think that the fact we already played them bodes well for the Cowboys. I think we can use that game tape to our advantage.
I have no doubt we will get to the Super Bowl. I've seen what the Giants and Packers can do and they don't scare me. It will take more than your average playing style to beat the Patriots. It will take smarts.
Many of the players said this week that they prepared for the Giants game like any other game. I think they should prepare for the Patriots in a whole new way. We may need some tricks of our own to get the job done. We may need to hit them harder and pound them more viciously than anyone else we've played. We need to be all that we can be and all that we are.
Inside the chests of each Cowboys player beats the heart of a champion. I've seen this in their eyes, in their words, and in their deeds. You ask me if I believe?
Your damned right I believe.

Number nine is number one!
Tony Romo can add another accomplishment to his long list of accolades, and no I'm not talking about bagging Jessica Simpson. It was reported yesterday that NFLshop.com sold more Dallas Cowboys merchandise than any other team in the NFL. Romo led the team in sales, and he was the top-selling jersey in the nation for 2007, easily surpassing fellow quarterbacks Tom Brady, Brett Favre, Peyton Manning and his baby brother Eli.
Of course Romo has made beating Eli Manning look as easy as 1-2-3. He is 3-0 against Eli and Big Blue, and after this weekend Romo will be able to boast a 5-0 record against the Manning siblings.
Look, up in the air... It's a bird... It's a plane...
Some of the New York newspapers have begun referring to Jessica Simpson as Tony Romo's kryptonite. They cite his drop-off in production since going public with his love connection. In the three games since professing his love, he has thrown just one touchdown versus five interceptions and is currently in the worst three-game slump of his career. On the flip side, the Giants are rallying around Eli Manning who is currently peaking and playing the best football in his career. Well if Simpson is Romo's kryptonite, than that makes Tony Romo Superman. And as we all know Superman always saves the day!
One last little tidbit...
The Giants say their current team is not the same team that already fell to the Cowboys twice this season. That's funny... the last time I checked they were still wearing those drab blue and red jerseys, and were still listed as the Giants in the standings... oh wait a minute, I forgot... they really are different... the last two times we played them they had Pro Bowler Jeremy Shockey at tightend and now he's out for the season! Hee hee hee...

They say patience is a virtue and that good things come to those who wait. Cowboys fans have been waiting a long time to win another playoff game after a decade of excellence that still remains unmatched.
After beating the Pittsburgh Steelers 27-17 in Super Bowl XXX, the Cowboys returned to the Playoffs the following season and beat the Minnesota Vikings 40-15 in the Wild Card round, but failed to beat the Carolina Panthers in the NFC divisional round.
The win against the Vikings would be the last post-season victory for the Cowboys in over a decade. Sure we've made a few post season appearances since then, but none of them resulted in a win.
This weekend the Dallas Cowboys have an opportunity to put an end to this miserable postseason winless streak.
The last postseason winless streak the Cowboys endured was also a decade long. We had beaten Green Bay 37-26 in the NFC Divisional Game in 1983 and never won again until we trounced the Eagles 34-10 in another NFC Divisional Game in 1993. Of course we went on to win the first of three 1990's Super Bowls that season.
Back then it was a brand new group of young players by the name of Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin and Emmitt Smith leading the way. Today, it will be a new cast of young players led by Tony Romo, Marion Barber and Jason Witten.
Sometimes history has a strange way of repeating itself.
The Cowboys are built to win now, but they are also young enough to continue winning and competing for the next ten seasons. They have an owner in Jerry Jones who will not allow this franchise to flounder. They have core players on offense and defense that are not just good, but among the best players in the entire NFL as evidenced by their 12 Pro Bowl nominations.
Just like the days when Aikman, Irvin and Smith were getting into a groove and taking the NFL by storm, this new breed of Cowboys are repeating that same pattern of success.
When the Cowboys take the field on Sunday against the New York Giants... they are not only playing for themselves and for the fans, they are playing for something much more important than all of that... a new era of excellence is about to begin.
History is knocking on the door, and a decade of non-stop championship football is being ushered in.
Remember every snap and every play you see on Sunday. Enjoy the ride and hang on for the thrill of a lifetime. There is something special in the air this season in Dallas, Texas. It's a feeling that I haven't felt in quite sometime.
When you look back at this era many years from now, always remember that it all began on a cold Sunday afternoon in Texas Stadium.
Enjoy the game everyone!
