Works by the Burning Artist Co-op.
Capsule review: Considering that the artists behind the Burning Artist Co-op hail from different cities, the occasional group show is a rare and monumental task. Their combined work looks at diverse subject matter through varied media, but true to this show's title, there are elements in each artist's work threading them all together. Sculptor, painter and designer Noah Norton of Menomonie, Wis., presents a modern perspective on archaism. The darkly psychedelic nature of California resident Marq Spusta's posters and illustrations share a connection to Milwaukee artist Ric Stultz's graphic-novel-esque drawings and paintings of disturbing, cute creatures. Josh Norton of Lincoln, Neb., merges woodcuts with digital photographs to create images that are both graphic and organic. Andy DuCett, the co-op's lone Minneapolitan, combines drawing, found-object installations, video and collage that merge relics of the Industrial Revolution. Jahna Peloquin

Umber Studios is proud to present Threads From There to Here, recent work from The Burning Artist Co-op. Co-op members include Noah Norton, Marq Spusta, Joshua Norton, Ric Stultz and Andy DuCett.
Like the show's title, the group has unraveled from the same point, forming the co-op in 2001 while undergraduates at the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Since then, they have pursued numerous career and creative paths. They live in four separate states. They have exhibited in cities including Chicago, London, Helsinki, Lincoln, Madison, Minneapolis, Honolulu, Grand Rapids, San Francisco and Los Angeles. They have worked professionally for clients like MTV, Target, The Fillmore West, Heavy Rotation, Tom Petty, HGTV and The Walker Art Center. They also have excellent record collections.
The work in the show represents their own creative idiosyncrasies and methodologies while expanding on their common Midwestern narratives. Their variety of approaches and concepts map various visual landscapes, and like a map, explore unique directions while staring from a similar point. With the many different options that are available to artists working today, the members of the co-op draw upon multiple methods in their projects: printmaking, illustration, drawing, installation, painting and various design approaches.
Thematically, their combined work investigates unique subject matter and is presented in ways appropriate to their subjective interests. But while their approaches may be diverse, all are interested in telling tales, setting stages and providing narrative departure points for rich and colorful stories to unravel. Like a book that you can't put down, the work presented in the show will surely intrigue and invite viewers to enjoy the visual precision and depth of these Midwestern born artists.
Threads from There to Here runs from January 3rd – 21st, opening Saturday, January 3rd from 8 – 12 pm. Umber studios is located at 3109 East 42nd Street in Minneapolis, MN. Hours are by appointment with more information available at http://umberstudios.com/. For more examples of work from the Burning Artist Co-op, please visit http://burningartist.com.
