Brake Records Releases Philippians Debut CD, Goodnight Life

First offering delivers a blend of organic and electronic elements with broad appeal

Los Angeles, Calif., August 6, 2006 Brake Records is proud to announce the release of the Philippians debut CD, Goodnight Life. The genre-defying electronic production marks the first release for both the band comprised of California natives Cory Nitta and Zak Mering and the label, headed by Ean Sumner.

The Philippians bring a new dimension to todays electronic music scene by applying their distinctive computer-based production techniques to organic sounds. Goodnight Life incorporates soaring vocals, dynamic acoustic performances, electronic elements and esoteric samples culled from everyday Los Angeles life. Inspired by a city that provides a hint of promise on the razors edge of despair, the Philippians coax heartwarming, uplifting melodies from their assortment of cutting-edge music creation tools.

The Philippians embody the new generation of musicians who take on production responsibilities in addition to songwriting and playing instruments. Nitta and Mering recorded the entire album on their PC, with the help of advanced yet affordable tools by companies like M-Audio and Ableton. Mering begins by sampling the sounds of his environment in high resolution via the M-Audio MicroTrack 24/96 and then arranging the sounds in Ableton Live. Nitta then layers his own vocals and performances on acoustic instruments including hammer dulcimer, harp, keys, guitar, bass and drums with orchestral sounds from libraries.

The Philippians have something new to offer todays electronic music landscape, says Ean Sumner, founder and CEO of Brake Records. In addition to effectively melding the electronic with the organic, the Philippians deliver a unique message of hope thats notably absent in most music created in this town. The Philippians have taken the dark and mysterious elements of Los Angeles and twisted them into a story of beauty in the midst of survival and chronic depression. The music expresses the great enchantment of art and creation for arts sake, while maintaining a wide appeal.

Beyond creating something that sounds unique in terms of fresh production, we want our melodies to communicate a very specific message, explains Nitta. When someone listens to our music, we want them to feel uplifted and reassured, like theyre floating up to heaven or falling in love. To accomplish this, we use real, organic instruments in a way that will speak to everyone from ardent electronica fans to techno neophytes.

Goodnight Life is currently available at http://www.philippiansmusic.com.

About the Philippians

The Philippians came together in 2004, after Cory Nitta and Zak Mering were introduced by mutual friends while living in San Diego. The two passionate electronic musicians instantly saw the potential to collaborate, though their official partnership didnt begin until they had both relocated to Los Angeles. Living in a small Hollywood apartment, they started making music around the clock.

Hailing from Ridgecrest, Calif., Nitta cites his mother as the primary impetus for his lifelong pursuit of music. Influenced by her love of the harp and guitar, Nitta started with the piano and quickly moved on to the guitar, bass and harp. After playing in a variety of local bands, Nitta left Ridgecrest in pursuit of broader opportunities to produce and perform music.

Born in Los Angeles to a family of musicians, Mering landed briefly in Northern California before relocating to the East Coast. As a teenager living outside Philadelphia, Mering developed an appreciation for Madlib, Prefuse 73, Daedelus and a variety of underground hip hop artists, which ultimately compelled him to start creating on his own computer-based music. After graduating from high school, Mering moved back to California to start a career in music.

The Philippians - Mirah Remix

Undoubtedly, one of the stranger phenomena in modern life is when your friend calls you from his cell phone when hes five feet away.

Really, its an emotional transformation that takes place- you start off wondering where said friend is calling from, become slightly perturbed when you see him giggling to your left, quickly begin to doubt your friendship with the spastically laughing man-child, and then it happens: you hear him on the phone. Except you hear the real voice to the left about 2.5 seconds before you hear it nestle into your right ear, which sparks a series of explosive questions. How is this happening? How can we be talking at different times now, but always talk to each other fine when were far away? Where are my words being sent to? How, exactly, do these cell phone things work? A stupid prank, like calling from five feet away, has a mental firework effect- it takes cell phones and transforms them from routine and banal into something mysterious and, suddenly, a little strange.

That realization, that new and exciting strangeness, is the feeling you get when you hear Philippians for the first time. Perhaps thats the reason that the bands core, Zak Mering and Corey Nitta, bristle at the idea of putting Philippians into a genre box. Not that people havent tried. You could call Philippians everything from glitch-folk, to acoustic techno, to singer/songwriter music, if the singer/songwriter were a robot. But none of those really fit the band, because all of them, even the made up ones, have preconceptions that dont necessarily contain the how-do-cell-phones-work weirdness that new music can evoke at its best.

The difference is that Philippians are willing to do the grunt work to harvest deep organic sounds, creating songs that are dynamic and surprising, unwilling to settle into a drum beaten coma. Zak originally hails from Pennsylvania (hes does solo work too), but now that the band is in California its easy to imagine them using the landscape to create these thick, real sounds. Listen to Zim Plants and youll get a guitar that sounds carved out from redwood bark, overlaid on a rustling click that sounds like crunching leaves.

The debut album, courtesy of Brake Records, is out now. But even a listen at the free tracks available on MySpace proves that the work is as diverse as the golden state itself. Ghost Cock sounds like a trip through the desert at sundown; Mirah Remix, ethereal except for a piano pinning it down, picks up the journey just before dawn. Heart Machine, with its heavy vocals and spinning intro, is like a dirge after The Big One happened and split the state in half. But its a happy dirge. Somehow. Philippians never fall into the easy tear dropped minor keys of depressing songs. They are too busy making new ones.

Really though, instead of imposing arbitrary musical cartography (That third drum beat represents San Jose!), the best way to look at the band is as unmappable. The constant changes in tempo, sound, and feeling within each song make each track refreshingly engaging. The samples are eclectic and unique, but despite the switch ups, each song is unified as a movement. Or maybe you could say each is as fluid as a conversation- but its a conversation thats made strange again, because youre having it with a truly new voice.

Philippian's Sampler is Available for Download - REGISTER to get it!

The Flips have had their first four songs mastered by the talented Chris Holmes.  These four songs will be pressed into 1000 free samplers that we will be distributing after some of your favorite shows in Los Angeles (prefuse73, datalyst, the books, etc).

We are talking about them putting together this amazing show of mixed mediums - lights, music, film, and or course SMOKE!  This show is going to cost like a trillion dollars, so it will be worth it to see the pure hearts of Cory and Zak light it up in a sea of mixed mediums and blinding technology.  Also, I've heard rumors that the famous "Chad Vega" might get up there and play drums in Cory's underwear.  This I have to see.

To get the sampler for free (digital download - printed versions with artwork will not be available for about three weeks) register here:  http://www.philippiansmusic.com/2.html

And I'll send you a link to a page where you can download the first four songs!
