ok, i've been one of the longest standing defenders of MYSPACE as a music networking site. but i'm not really feeling the mass invites to the email boxes. and i'm worried that it's a sign that i'm gonna get sick of using MYSPACE. post up your party on our comments if you like but if you send stuff to our mailbox it just makes a mess in there and makes it hard to communicate with real people about real things.... so i'm just gonna use that as a means of starting to downsize our "friends". FAIR WARNING.

ok, this is from a spanish blog and it’s really nice and also funny because it was translated by a computer...
translation: Chapel Hill (North Carolina), never has been a too excellent enclave in the electronic panorama, until in 2004 a group of hardened collectors of vinyls, DJ..s, producers, promoters, writers and musicians of the zone decided to unite their forces and to fight by a common objective, the one to create a local scene that allowed the cultural development of that part of America where all the electronic one usually is quickly defenestrado. For it they created an artistic platform by means of which to make celebrations of course and, a seal to the use, FrequeNC, where the limited edition vinyl would be the used means and defendant to show all an restlessness trowel that went from post punk more falsified folk more synthetic, hip hop, pop, techno experimental or down tempo. Until this 12"in charge of a stranger of Durham removed from the sleeve, maxi of electro that or could have published in Is It or in the very same heart of Detroit. Zeke Serious aka Datahata a long time ago it came being interested in the electronics as a result of his passage by Coldsides, a local band that gained certain reputation between the villagers and who filtreaba between the Emo and the Indie Rock without too many pretensions. But the restlessness of the good one of Zeke included many fields to part of the rock, from dub and the experimentation by the space of people like Augutus Pablo or King Tubby, electro of Is it, disc, people of krautrock like Can or Neu! happening through the industrial sounds of Volteire Night club, DAF or Chris & Cosey, the legacy of Mr Fingers, ambient of Brian milimalistas Eno or to praxis of Robert Hood.

so we're not snobs but we're trying to be a little discrimintating about becoming friends with people. we love making friends and hearing new music but some people definitely seem to be just going for quantity without giving a shit whether there's any connection or commonality (is that a word? is it the right one?) anyway, you get what i'm saying. so we might be suspicious if you have tons of friends or if you're some type of crazy republican or in some type of smooth jazz or fusion/jam band. if it turns out that we deny you and you're a nice person who's really interested in what we do, we're sorry. just write us an email and we'd love to be friends. we just want our friends folder to be a window into a world of wornderfullnessocity and not a random sampling of myspace.

$TINKWORX (JT Stewart) grew up in upstate New York, the son of record collector and blues revivalist Mike Stewart, nurtured by his father's diverse music collection and college radio. As a teenager, he moved to Mill Spring, North Carolina and was given a vintage synthesizer by his parents. With the acquisition of a drum machine and a few more odd boxes, JT entered a secret cave not to return for many years. Then in 1999 JT and friend Minto George started Down Low Music with two 7"s featuring JT's work. Those first tracks, by now licenced twice more, pushed $tinkworx into full swing, recording for numerous labels including Bunker, Platinum Projects (Mo-Wax), Rush Hour, Delsin, and Regal/New Religion (EMI). With upcoming releases on four separate labels, $tinkworx just returned from his second European tour including a Paris show for over 1500. With inspirations reaching throughout the history of dance music and a special love for the deep sounds of Detroit Techno, JT's highly personal music lies between house, techno, disco, and funk.
EAR PWR., soon to have a 12" on frequeNC, consists of Devin Booze and Sarah PWR. Based in Winston-Salem and Asheville, NC, they bring an electro/disco/acid/pop style with thumping beats, his-and-hers vocals, hilariousness of all types, and a heavy dose of bullhorn siren. Their live show is guaranteed to get the blood flowing.
DATAHATA is Zeke Graves, formerly of local post-post favorite Cold Sides. Also with a 12" coming soon on frequeNC, Zeke has been fine tuning his solo electronic performance for a few years now. Utilizing both electro and 4/4 beat structures, and influenced heavily by the studio techniques of Jamaican music, DATAHATA is all about the hardware and delivers a classic, no-computer set. Expect bumping beats with sparse, crystal-clear synth, and occasional vocal elements.
PYKRETE is the experimental electronic project of local musical shaman Chuck Johnson, formerly of Spatula, SharkQuest, et al. His sets vary from textural soundscapes to minimal, drum-machine-backed, experimental techno. He's outgrown his trademark suitcase-of-wires but his mysterious, laboratory-styled sound creation is always worth seeing and reminds us of the lost local visionary Randy Ward. Performing with the PYKRETE PERCUSSION UNIT, Chuck joined by an assembled cast of local hand percussionists, expect a powerful and danceable rhythmic set.
djs MOTHERSBROTHERS are Charlie Hearon (dj NASTY BOOTS) and Jon Terrell (dj JUAN VELCRO), owners of frequeNC records and fanatic collectors of all sorts of music. They started playing records at house parties about eight years ago just because it was hard to find good dance parties in Chapel Hill. They have been the djs for the Cuntry Kings drag troupe, had a long standing weekly new wave party called Triple Ts, and have always liked playing alongside live acts trying to promote communication between the rock and electronic scenes. frequeNC records currently hosts a monthly dance party at Nightlight which features live music and dj sets. Their sets feature disco, electro, new wave, hip-hop, techno, house, freestyle, b-more, funk, and more disco.
dj FAMILY VACATION (or dj ADMIT IT!) is Ethan Clauset of the 1200 Problems monthly and long standing dance promotion crew Dyssembler. He's also a contributor to the weekly New Science Experience on WXYC and was involved with Chapel Hill's experimental electronic festival Transmissions. He's got deep crates, rocks various styles, including house, b-more, and disco and is adept at working the late-night scene.
SECRET BOYFRIEND is the experimental/love/pop project of Ryan Martin. Ryan was one of the main forces behind the growth of the Nightlight into a stronghold of leftfield everything and wild sweaty dance parties. He's always popping up in new projects but is best know for his work in Boyzone and Boner Machine.

- "Perhaps the Russians have done the right thing, after all, in abolishing copyright. It is well known that conscious and unconscious appropriation, borrowing, adapting, plagiarizing, and plain stealing are variously, and always have been, part and parcel of the process of artistic creation. The attempt to make sense out of copyright reaches its limit in folk song. For here is the illustration par excellence of the law of Plagiarism. The folk song is, by definition and, as far as we can tell, by reality, entirely a product of plagiarism."

so the icing on a spell of bad luck was COPS at the frequeNC compound friday night at neill's going away party. is this the beginning of the end for houseparties? 4 years and no trouble yet. thanks to those who set up so much cool gear and did loud or quiet or no sets. it really felt like the old soundsystem was in effect and we had a lot of close family in the house. dj tone on the decks. dare i say cold sides was in the house !!! $tinkworx rocked about two wicked joints while orange county sheriff's deputies listened. pykrete rocked a stealthy set under the cover some late night rain. that was awesome chuck, sorry i kept cutting it down. and let's not forget we did it all for neill. much love and safe travels to neill - way to say goodbye on the mic !!!!!!!

here's the interview i did for the indie when i was asked to organize a night for the upcoming SIGNAL electronic music fest in CH and before that night was dismantled. (for those of you i've been excitedly telling about our night, it no longer exists per se, DATAHATA and $tinkworx will play early at nightlight on friday and robo sapien will play at 506 on saturday) word.
> why you think this area needs an electronic music fest
It's an important experiment for all of us to be part of. It's a good chance for the people who participate in this music to take stock of what we're capable of right now. And hopefully, it's a big, noticable chance for people who might be interested in this music to check out a lot of different stuff. And we need it because we always need a chance to dance.
> and what do you hope to gain from it
frequeNC hopes to gain the memory of a party we're proud of. And also the chance to show a few new people our own perspective on how one might go out and shake a leg in a small progressive southern town.
> describe what it's been like looking out from the inside of the electronic music/DJ scene locally the last few years (or in general).
I'm not crazy about the word "scene". I think it implies to everyone that there can be this situation where a whole lot of artists in one place are working toward the same goal and that there will be this positive momentum that will sustain this and make things easier to do. That's gotta be rare if it exists. I've never seen a scene. In reality things are always changing and success is usually the result of focused work. And we have a lot of different ideas and goals within the same musical realm. Some people envision large glamorous clubs here. Or this being a destination for mega-stars to perform. Some envision this being a source of new dance music. Some people just want to get paid a little to do what they do. But still that's a good thing, and this is a chance for all those ideas to come out into the open. For artists (and i mean everybody involved - dj - producer - vocalist - engineer - organizer - label) it's about making good art which is seldom easy. The real challenge is the greater struggle for Chapel Hill/Carrboro/Triangle to survive and thive as a cutural center. Rent's going up and it ain't that easy. Can venues stay open? Can new ones open? Can artists get paid? Can artists live in town? To me the scariest thing is venues. We really need intimate, not-too-big venues to survive and to be sensitive to the needs of djs and electronic acts. Less than in rock where small venues only need to handle vocals though the house system, dance music relies on quality sound systems which are maintained and this is costly to small venues. So success depends a little on venues taking an interest in this music.
if it's been an uphill battle, what has changed recently to bring folks together?
My favorite positives of the last few years: (1) Late-night resturant/lounge/bars like Tallula's, The Wine Bar, and Fuse supporting dj music. This is awesome! Tallula's even has a sweet sound system. (2) The ablsolute explosion of access to previously rare and unknown music thanks to the internet and the huge wave of independent re-issuing. I think this is a big source of inspiration artists and for people who check out more varied music than they used to. Listen to XYC, XDU, or step inside CD Alley.
>how is frequeNC working with artists outside the area,
The hope of NC growing into a stronger, more progressive state is not just about us growing but about us having connections to good stuff everywhere. We want NC to be a source of innovation as well as a destination for innovation. The label is a tiny version or part of the same big hope. In the process of doing this we meet inspiring artists from other places and it seems natural to collaborate with them to strengthen our bonds. Also the frequeNC crew have been dance music tourists for years and we hope to bring a little of what we've experienced other places "back to the old home."
and are you expanding/what are upcoming plans?
It's been a long haul to get our initial 4 projects out. We're now trying to get them all sold and plan new projects. We've been on the wild, experimental tip so far, so expect some focus on cleaner sounding dance tunes. Probably starting this summer with a DATAHATA EP and a super-secret white label. We have our fingers crossed to do a latin flavored project to honor that great influence on our state. WE LOVE YOU, SALUDOS COMPAY! I'm joking, no pressure you guys.
>what is the biggest core group of listeners/supporters of >your label in this area?
Simple answer, NIGHTLIGHT PEOPLE, that's our nest. Hopefully it's people who are into music based on feeling instead of genre. Music explorers! People who dance weird like to "clap it up"!
> ideally, where do you see this scene in a year?
Oh yeah! I see mid-sized performance venues doing well and having great sound like 506. I see lounge/bars with great small sound like Tallula's. I see CD Alley in a bigger store, able to sell more techno, house, et al. I see all the speakers in the Triangle functioning perfectly. Seriously though, I see more electronic live acts. I see us thinking it would be a good idea to try this again. And I really hope that we are all able to strengthen what makes this a great place for all types of music which is a supportive public who is willing and eager to check out something new. Not just making this a destination for mainstream, commercial acts.
> talk abt influences/inspirations for the label.
Ok, I can think of about a million answers to this. Labels, from Factory to Nonesuch to Underground Resistance... Music, from UK/Athens/NYC Post-Punk to Italo Disco to Chicago House to Detroit Techno to Dutch Electro to Hip Hop, Funk, and Soul to Deep Jamaican and African Rhythm... GAY MUSIC! BLACK MUSIC! WOMEN'S MUSIC! NERD MUSIC! POLITICAL MUSIC! The power of people making music.
