RE: Mondo Cello Fest 2008 On Sep 9, 2008, at 4:21 PM, Joe Medina wrote:
Dear friends and colleagues, I am deeply disappointed to let you know that I have to postpone the Mondo Cello Fest until the spring. We all live in difficult times right now and I have seen my resource pool dwindle as the costs for running this tour keep rising. I have been hit by financial blow by financial blow in the last few weeks, but I have been burning the candle at both ends in an effort to make this work. Any of you who know me at all know that I am a fighter and a hard worker until the end—if there was a way to avoid this then I would do it. Hopefully, this will not sour my relationship with any of you and we can move forward with the goal of picking up the reins on this soon (as I am definitely looking at this as a postponement and not a cancellation). Thankfully, money has not exchanged hands in most cases at this point and there are not too many advance tickets yet that need refunding. Yesterday was my last attempt at trying to horde enough money together to cover everything, but circumstances deemed that it is not to be—at this particular moment in time anyway. My plan now is to put my nose to the grindstone, stay off the road for a while, and save enough money to have Mondo Cello Fest in the first few months of next year. I am hoping the venues, performers, personnel, etc. are all understanding about this unforeseeable matter and we can reschedule this with the same line-up and venues intact. Thank you so very much, Joe Medina

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - September 8, 2008 FREEDOM CENTER'S "HEALING VOICES" TOP STORY ON FORBES.COM "Lucky 7" Anniversary Celebration Planned
NORTHAMPTON, MA: Forbes, a leading international business magazine, has chosen the Northampton, MA based Freedom Center, an alternative mental health organization run by and for people diagnosed with psychiatric disorders, to be featured as their charity of the month in September. From August 29th through the end of September, Forbes is highlighting the Freedom Center's work through its website, www.forbes.com. Included in Forbes' "Philanthropic Pitch" campaign to support Freedom Center is a five-minute video along with a written story called "Healing Voices" about one of Freedom Center's Co-Founders, Will Hall. For the first four days of the release, "Healing Voices" was the top rated story on the Forbes website, and it has consistently remained in the top ten since. To access the "Healing Voices" story and video, you can visit www.freedom-center.org and follow the direct link to Forbes. To celebrate the honor of being recognized by Forbes, and its seven-year anniversary, Freedom Center will host a special event to screen the video at its "Lucky 7 Psychosocial" party on September 20th at 6 pm, at the World War II Club, 50 Conz St., Northampton, MA. The celebration will also include a hula-hooping performance by the Noho Hooperstars, live music by "Bucket Benny," and a dance party hosted by DJ Black Angus until midnight. Screening of the short film will begin at 7pm. There will be a cash bar, and the event will be catered by the Alternative Food Company. Suggested donations are $10 at the door, however nobody will be turned away for a lack of funds. "Forbes contacted me a few years ago for an article on alternatives to anti-depressant medications," said Freedom Center co-founder Will Hall. He said the Forbes editor was so moved by the story of the Freedom Center that the group was chosen for this special fundraising opportunity via the Forbes website. Local filmmaker PJ Moynihan, of Digital Eyes Film, produced the 5-minute Freedom Center video that appears on the Forbes site. "I have a personal connection with the subject matter," said Moynihan. "This is a tremendous opportunity for the Freedom Center story to begin making its way out into the world as a model for change." Mary Clare Higgins, Mayor of the City of Northampton, describes Freedom Center as "a valuable option for many of our residents. It is a welcome addition to services available to citizens of our city." Freedom Center is currently funded solely by individual donations and small grants, which include monies from Resist, Inc. and the City of Northampton's Community Development Block Grant Program (CDBG). "It demonstrates how a small group of dedicated folks can initiate change as well as a whole new way of seeing and doing things," says Northampton CDBG Administrator, Michael T. Owens. Freedom Center is a volunteer, peer-run group that supports informed choice and self-determination regarding medication, other psychiatric treatments, and holistic alternatives. Freedom Center incorporates a Harm Reduction philosophy and supports people's choices in their own mental health recovery and in their own lives. Freedom Center offers yoga, acupuncture, writing groups, support groups, educational events and volunteer advocates for rights protection. Freedom Center is volunteer-run and offers all its services for free. Donations are tax-deductible and can be made to Freedom Center/CHOICES and mailed to P.O. Box 623, Northampton, MA 01061. Forbes.com is the single largest economic portal on the Internet, with an estimated 15 million visitors per month. Initiated by Forbes Senior Editor, Richard Morais, the Philanthropic Pitch is a unique feature that, each month, promotes a charity in an effort to encourage philanthropic giving. The Freedom Center Philanthropic Pitch will be featured for the month of September, after which it will be archived at Forbes.com. - - -

recent press:
The howls of a wounded cello and the voice of a tormented angel suffuse the blood-soaked tragedy on the American Conservatory Theater's stage. Above all - literally, seated high amid the massive organ pipes of Walt Spangler's industrial-baroque cathedral set - composer, cellist and vocalist Bonfire Madigan Shive is an electrifying one-woman heavenly choir. - San Francisco Chronicle 6/13/08
On Fire: Of all the zany places for a singing cellist to perform, the ultra-imaginative and captivating Bonfire Madigan has chosen, in a repeat appearance, the Cloverdale Plaza. There's gotta be some secret connection—maybe her brother works at Pick's Drive-In? Because surely Madigan, who's just finished a lauded run with ACT's 'Tis Pity She's a Whore, for which she composed and performed the music, has bigger things on her mind. One part PJ Harvey, one part Arthur Russell and one part Jacqueline du Pré, Madigan in concert is dazzling; she can build a skyscraper of sound with a full-bodied fortissimo and then knock it into dust in one breath. Once a stray puzzle piece on the early '90s Olympia scene, Madigan has settled quite comfortably into San Francisco's Mission district. Buy her a milkshake at Pick's when she performs, inexplicably, on Friday, July 18, at the Cloverdale Plaza, Cloverdale Boulevard, between First and Second streets, Cloverdale, CA. — Bohemian.com Week of July 16-22, 2008 Picks by Gabe Meline.
Albums include Sew True, ...from the Burnpile, Saddle the Bridge, Plays for Change, and the recently repressed i bleed: a decade of song; she is currently finishing her sixth full-length album, to be released in late 2008. See her performing live this Thurs July 31st in SF at Cafe Du Nord and Sat Aug 2nd in Big Sur at the Henry Miller Library. Visit Shive at

Category: Blogging
doing this project heals me. keeps me connected to my inner life and it's interconnection/interdependence to the outer world. and that's you all. i am blessed to have had and continue to receive such inspiring, amusing, befuddling, heart warming responces and artistic conversations and contributions to what BMad is and does in the world. we are shaping this - deciding this together. as the song refrains: theworld'schanging theworld-theworld'schanged the world -- inch x inch ... we inch our way in ...
so here is the latest amazingly fun and sweet bit of creative feedback from the great extended BMad community. i feel like i have the coolest chosen, self-selecting, self-determined network of family/fan/friends ever! and yeah, that's you too!
i am offering this blog space as a forum to share, exchange ideas, writing, poetry, plays, art, illuminations, brain/heart droppings or nearly anything you can dream up from having these sounds, ideas in your life. and as we anticipate more sounds and performances and we shape the present together ...
yes, as my latest composition is exclaiming:
Flattery Loves Company!
i have written many songs and pieces of artwork inspired by my examination of others creativity and perspectives on reality/truth/beauty/brutality and who decides/controls it. hey - we do!
so here's the invitation: let's continue on with this. the BMad Army Souldiers opened it up and i made a pact to keep opening: keeping collective juices flowing: nudge nudges to our compas: a culture of RECIPROCITY & RADICAL COMPASSION IN ACTION:
Thanks to Mark for busting this out again.

A Lunchtime Screenplay for Madigan - The Director's Cut: -Setting: Two friends sit at an old table in a dimly lit cafe. There is a light haze in the room. The city is unknown. Outside, it is raining.- -Camera pans to the ongoing conversation- Person A: "It is raining." Person B: "Yez." A: "It rains a lot'" B: "Yez." A: "I used to like rain" B: "Zertanly" A: "You're doing that fake Portuguese accent again. Stop it." B: "Ztop What?" A: "You know I hate that." B: "Of Course." -The conversation lulls for a time- -The camera draws back as a smartly dressed waiter brings over an order of food.- Waiter: "OK, I have two almond biscotti, a half-caf mocha latte with cinnamon, a Moroccan tea with a twist of orange, and uhh... Which of you ordered the chili fries?" A: "That would be me." -The waiter sets down the items and appears to be hesitating.- B: "Oh yeah. Here's something for you." -B hands the server a coupon for a free car wash with purchase of an oil change and tire rotation. The waiter exits left- A: "You always over-tip." B: "It's how you get good service. How are you chili fries?" A: "Hmmmm.... Something is missing. Please try some. Tell me what you think. Though we'll need more napkins." -The two friends share the chili fries- B: "Something is certainly missing. Something is just not right." A: "Yes." B: "I cannot put my finger on it." A: "I have." B: "What is it? What is it that creates this dismal absence of joy in the chili fries?" A: "Eclectic cello music. There is none here. So there is no life. No flavor." B: "Yes. All is bland and formless without the cello." A: "If only there was cello." B: "Yes. But not just any cello, I am sure." A: "No. Not just any cello, indeed. It must be Her." B: "Perhaps she will return some day." A: "Perhaps. Perhaps." B: "I shall look to that day." LET US Walk the talk of MLK today & every day:
Human salvation lies in the hands of the creatively maladjusted. Martin Luther King, Jr.,
The curse of poverty has no justification in our age. It is socially as cruel and blind as the practice of cannibalism at the dawn of civilization, when men ate each other because they had not yet learned to take food from the soil or to consume the abundant animal life around them. The time has come for us to civilize ourselves by the total, direct and immediate abolition of poverty.
[I]t is necessary to understand that Black Power is a cry of disappointment. The Black Power slogan did not spring full grown from the head of some philosophical Zeus. It was born from the wounds of despair and disappointment. It is a cry of daily hurt and persistent pain.
Martin Luther King, Jr., Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community?, 1967.
