It’s finally a reality! You ever had a project that when it’s done you kinda feel empty cause it occupied such a big part of you life? Well, for me that is my new EP.
Over a year ago, my friend Stuart Bogie (saxophonist for Antibalas) and keyboardist Paul Cox teamed up to produce a few of my songs. One of the reasons it took so long, was because I kind have this natural resistance to moving forward, probably due to depression, disbelief and a scattered lifestyle. It would take me weeks sometimes to pick up the phone and call my band to set up a recording session. I guess there’s that part of all of us that just says what’s the point. I’m gonna quote myself during the session "the last thing the world needs is another song"......now that is totally coming from the wrong place. The world needs more music. Thanks to Paul and Stuart for being so sincerely positive and working their asses off (many many late nights) to make this recording sparkle.
As the project became more than a third done....I became confident that we were on to something refreshing and honest.
For those of you that haven’t made a record before should know that all the colors, melodies, funkiness, emotion are mustered up in a very neutral environment. Walls of glowing gear, wires hanging on the wall, a couch with a big tear in it, a bright white computer screen, occasional smoking of cigarettes, empty beer cans, a stack of recording gear catalogs and someone doing the same thing in the next room. I’m off the track...but my point is
the collective imagination of Stuart, Paul and myspelf became clear in the last trimester of this musical baby. The forest, the stream, the deer, the birds, the slot machine, the card dealer, the first person at a party, the balloons tied to the mail box all of this was imagined by someone maybe god...or maybe the producers...or maybe you!
Like poetry the interpretation of a recording will be heard in many different ways...
I hope you enjoy this music because it’s truley the best we’ve done!
I’d like to give a shout out to all the generous musicians that sacrificed sleep and hunger to get it done.
