Hi friends, if you cannot join this rally, please take the time to write a quick email to the contacts below expressing your outrage at this preposterous plan - SHOOTING IN A NATIONAL PARK?? Excuse me, but I thought this is why we had National Parks to keep out the REDNECKS!

The following is from Animal Liberation NSW:

Lee Rhiannon, Greens MP, is organising the following emergency rally in Sydney next Tuesday to show the Labor Government that any decision to allow shooting in National Parks is unacceptable.
Please consider attending this important protest and pass this on to your friends and networks.

When: 12:00pm, Tuesday 27th October 2009
Where: Outside NSW Parliament, Macquarie Street, Sydney

Bring your signs. Bring your friends.
Speakers include Greens and environment groups.

The Labor Government is once again doing deals with the Shooters Party. Labor has made an offer to allow hunting in 13 national parks in exchange for the support of the two Shooters Party MPs in the NSW Upper House to help pass government legislation.

Tell the government that you won't stand by as they sacrifice our national parks to blood sports. Shooters are not conservationists. Killing native wildlife is their form of recreational pleasure. Only the power of public opposition will remove this legislation from the negotiating table.

National parks preserve our native animals and our heritage. They deserve the highest order of protection. The Shooters' Party is only interested in protecting its own interests, not conservation or the greater public good.

Please email the following MPs and express your strong opposition to any deal that would allow shooting in national parks:
Premier Nathan Rees -

Environment Minister John Robertson -

Opposition Leader Barry O'Farrell -

Shadow Environment Minister Catherine Cusack -

Finally we have dates set to go into the studio to begin work on the debut album with the amazing Magoo of Blackbox Studios fame. Magoo has worked with many amazing acts such as Regurgitator, Spiderbait, Shihad, Gerling and even Midnight Oil... the list of great Australian acts he has worked with is endless and almost as long as the list of ARIA nominations he has received!

We begin tracking at Blackbox on the 21st of July. We hope to have all the tracking completed by August and then mix with Magoo soon thereafter.. We are shooting for the release by the end of this year...

We'd also like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank and show our appreciation to Phil McKellar who produced both of our EP's. Phil has moved on to a new permanent position in the industry which is a sad loss for independant bands, but great news for Phil. Phil McKellar is an amazing producer, having launched such greats as Grinspoon, Silverchair and many more - even having had the honour of recording Nirvana live during their Australian tour.

We feel priveleged and honoured to have had these opportunities and are very excited about the upcoming recording. Anyone who is in a band knows the value of working with great producers. Anyone can record a track, only a handful of people really know how to make a great track sound amazing.

Speaking of which, it is all about great tracks and in the midst of writing you can become so lost in the process that it is hard to gauge how good the songs are... who are we to say anyway! But the new songs all feel really strong, better than anything we have done before - I think ... I never really know till about a year after I hear the final mixes! We have about 13 tracks which will grow to 15 and then be whittled back to ten or so for the album.

We also have some really exciting news regarding getting our Myspace and mailing list friends literally involved with the album, but we are keeping it under wraps at this stage. If you really wanna know and want to get on board just send us a message and we'll fill you in! Or at least make sure you are on the mailing list and that way you will be informed - you can join the mailing list on our Myspace page..

More soon!

The Help for Wildlife response team who are actually based in the
vicinity where the Kinglake/Healesvill..e fires occurred are on
standby waiting to enter the foreground when safe to rescue injured
wildlife. They already have a number of animals in care at this
early stage and are expecting many more needing help. They
desperately need, medical supplies such as, silverzine cream, non
stick dressings, soft bandages, vet wrap, Saline,
disinfectant/..clorhexidine, syringes, pain relief and antibiotics.
Also needing feed such as hay to provide food for starving wildlife
and donations for fuel to carry out the extensive search and rescue
needed to help these animals. Notably kangaroos and wallabies found
in abundance in this area can take months to recover and require a
great deal of dressings and medication during this time.

Backstage @ Splendour - The Black Stars "Band's Eye View" Day 1
Regan, drummer for The Black Stars shares what it's really like to open Splendour In The Grass ...

Fri 6pm – 18 hours till showtime

Off to Byron for our last rehearsal before the Splendour show. Nothing like a run through and some fine tuning of the kit to make you feel well and truly primed.

Fri 10pm – 14 hours till showtime

Being well-behaved and not indulging in my usual few beers at the end of the week! Particularly proud of myself because a heap of mates from Sydney have made the road trip and are starting to get into the festival mode. Could've taken the other route and gotten hammered, but decided to play it safe – in bed by 11pm.

Sat 6am – 6 hours till showtime

Stoked! Thought I wouldn't sleep too well…. That I'd be wired …but I got a good six hours in. Got a crew here ready to pack the 'set' into the car and help us load up …what a treat.

Chris spent the last couple of weekends constructing set pieces to go on stage … something along the lines of the EP cover to add another element to the show. We've always loved going to gigs where the band have made an effort on the visuals as well as the sound.

Having said that - I'm sure it'd look good if we could fit it in the van! Nothing that a power saw can't remedy, but not really something you want to be mucking around with at the eleventh hour. A few adjustments and we're in the car, ready to rock … smells like I'm in port-a-loo already with freshly shaven wood!

Laminates – check. Instruments – check. Mirror and towels – check. Nerves – check!

Sat 10am – 2 hours till showtime

Driving through Byron and the town is alive with crew amped to see some great music. The day is amazing – there's no white stuff in the sky and it feels like you could be at Homebake in summer and not Splendour in winter. Happy days!

No sooner have we pulled up behind the Supertop stage and an army of dudes spill out of the tent, extending hands to unload and lug our gear. Game on!

In a matter of minutes our gear is up on stage and microphone leads are snaking around my drums and cymbal stands. Everyone is really cool and trying to help - no ego crap that you can sometimes see in the game. Sound check on the kit and it sounds HUGE! No … it sounds MASSIVE … My kick feels like its hammering through my chest.

I can just make out the sound dude at the mixing desk … he looks like a doll. Behind that I can see punters starting to move around outside the tent. 11 – gates are open.

Sat 12am – 10 minutes till showtime

In our trailer, warming up. The rider has arrived – ready to be nice and icy by the end of the gig. A comfy couch has turned up and we've got access to toilets with toilet paper! (Wonder if it will last all day?) There's an amazing area out back that all the artists can hang out in with a barista, bar, couches and masseuse! Starting to recognize a few faces … Gyroscope Art vs Science (who are playing on another stage at the same time as us) a few of the boys from Powderfinger.

Time to go and I'm surprised I feel as in control as I do! Gotta enjoy it – the experience will be over before I know it …The sun feels like warm fingers on my shoulders, yet there are goosebumps springing up on my arms.

Sat 12:08pm – 2 minutes till showtime

In control?!!!!! The big clock on the side of stage looks like it's on Valium. The minute hands take forever to tell us its time to get on stage, the lights rove around like they're looking for us and I wish I was a kid playing spotlight and hiding.

Sat 12:42 – 2 minutes after showtime

Woohoo! What a blast ... 30 minutes of feeling like everything you work hard for is completely worth it.

Nothing went drastically wrong (always an option when playing some new stuff). The sound was incredible onstage (always questionable at small gigs) and the punters stayed (always a good sign!) Opening the main stage at a major festival feels like a hard gig – people are only just filtering in through the gates. They're not completely amped yet. And we're the guinea pigs for the sound set up. But … I've never had so much fun! Chris demo'd the stage and me and my drum kit were lucky to escape unscathed – the sound guys dug it but pointed out that Chris was lucky to avoid smashing the ABC camera with his guitar…… that'd hurt!

Saturday 1:00 20 minutes after showtime

The same gloved hands appear and we're off stage and packed up in no time. Gear is in the trailer and locked up – safe and secure on a site with more security than … There's a lot more noise in the festival now and we can hear the other stages starting to crank!

Saturday 1:30 – 4:30 – a few hours after show time

Cracked only one beer cos we've got a string of interviews with local, regional and national media. But we put away a few soy cappuccinos for some sustenance. I see other artists doing a bit of pacing back behind stage. I guess the adrenalin doesn't wane when the fame waxes …

Can't eat, too excited – but starting to get well-keen to see some of the awesome acts on the bill. A bit of down time and then out to the VIP area before going to side of stage to watch …

Operator Please … Man if these guys are THAT good now, imagine how cranking they'll be over the next few years.

The Music. UNBELIEVABLE. That singer can croon and dance like a mo fo… world class stuff. Everyone at front of house and side of stage is transfixed and putty in this band's hands. The light outside is starting to fade and its that special time of afternoon when things just get better and better!

Saturday 4:30 – 6:30 – a few more hours after show time

Can't believe it … Was bought a Peroni by a lovely girl at the artists bar … Smiled and walked away and smacked into a camouflaged black sofa. Took a big stack, (but got up real quick). A bit of blood in the mouth and a bruise blackening up on my hip….. and only a quarter of my Peroni left! I think only 4 people saw it?!

Its not about me, it's about the music… so lets get serious and see some Splendourous acts! And the hours and minutes are measured by bands and beer now … so no more time-checking!

Stood up the back to get a band's eye view of Gyroscope – and those boys are professionals – very slick and serious … off to a great start for their tour.

Some mates saw The Drones over in the GW Mclennan Tent in the meantime, and it sounds like I missed out on a great act. The Fratellis were energetic – unlike me, needing to sit and gather a second wind! Bump into Tricky who seems like a very friendly and polite guy with a warm and gentle smile … Lovely!

Band of Horses are a stand-out act for the day for EVERYONE who sees them. They've got more of an edge than they might appear…

Thank GOD (or whoever) that Living End got back together…. Those guys kick butt and Chris Cheney is a complete gentleman (although he's not keen on crashing the Devo stage when we hit him up later in the night!)

Devo are in-bloody-credible. Tight and energetic for a group of guys who could be spending their time doing other things these days. Everyone gets why they're the headline act!

Backstage @ Splendour - The Black Stars "Band's Eye View" Day 2
The Black Stars' rockin' drummer, Regan Cross, continues to share her "band's eye view" of Splendour in the Grass ... Here, she covers Day 2 of the Festival ...

Listening to British India both on the radio and live from a distance as we negotiate our weary bodies back into Splendour for Day 2. Another great Australian act getting the Supertop off to a Super start! Trying not to choke on the dust … maybe a little bit of rain wouldn't have gone astray overnight??!

Inside now and starting to work up some more excitement from the infectious Vampire Weekend … Tight and on it, everyone's loving em…

Woohoo The Wombats! The sound is that good it sounds like they could be miming to their latest CD offering – but there's no doubt that they're able to pull off a great live performance and everyone's dancing to Joy Division

I need to get as close to Patience from The Grates as possible, so I make my way behind of stage and who should I bump into but the lovely lady herself…. With the beaming Alana and John hot on her bat tails. She's geared up in a Batman outfit and stands behind the entrance as the Batman theme psychs the crowd up. Then … she bounces and rips through songs both new and old … like she's on a trampoline – without losing a single breath! She must 'train'!!

Oh Splendourous! Back to back comes another favourite - The Vines … all eyes are pinned to Craig as he contorts his mouth and eyes in a variety of gestures … he's a freak and amazing performer and the band solidly march behind him … Again unleashing some new stuff and backing it up with some favourite olds …

Sigur Ros wins the prize for best outfits – very classy and memorable…. Marching band style. You can see why these guys are hot favourites and the evening turns in to one that people won't forget with warm sound filling up our bodies like hot soup.

All to be churned around as Wolfmother take the stage like they've owned it for the whole two days, and everyone else has just been keeping it warm! There are plenty of rumours bouncing around out the back about this being their last gig with the current line-up… If this urban myth is in fact true, then I'm glad it got to be my last experience of them and the Splendour Festival!

Now back to the real world …. Till next year!

Yeah well I guess you could say the band is just a little bit excited (!!!!) about being added to the lineup for Splendour 2008. We received the call about 3 weeks ago and had to keep it under our hats until today, so sorry to all of you that we have been strategically avoiding answering the question, we were not allowed to tell anyone..

The best bit is we are playing The Supertop (main stage), we are still not sure which day (hopefully Saturday so we can party from there on in!!!). And party we will.. hopefully with all of our friends that have helped us get here by supporting us, coming along to gigs and spreading the good word!!

We thank you all greatly once again!

Watch out, got a feeling it could be a lively one ; )

I've been vegan for more than 10 years now (and please don't think you're the first to call me 'Regan the vegan' lol...).  For many of these years I've also been a huge fan of the Cruelty Free Shop.... and coming home to a box jam-packed with all kinds of vegan treats!  Every month there's a new product, so its fun to keep an eye out for the recently-disovered non animal-tested, non animal ingredient foods, cosmetics, cleaning products and pet things.  My pups Sid Vicious and Megsy (both rescued from pound accomodation) love the vegan dog food and the macadamia pistachio nougat is sensational.

  Meet Sid Vicious!

Even more sensational is getting to play and support the Cruelty Free Living Festival in Sydney on Sunday the 2nd of November 2008. Happening for a few years now, the idea behind the festival is to educate people about animal cruelty issues and show them how they can avoid supporting cruelty to animals by making simple changes in their everyday life. Not to mention, inviting them to sample a huge range of vegan foods.... Can't wait for a huge vegan pig-out after the gig!

Its going to be in Belmore Park, right next to Central Station in Haymarket so no transport excuses!

Jessica Bailey from Animal Lib is the brains behind this beautiful beast - and she's hoping on a couple of well-known bands to headline the festival.  This would be awesome - to drag a few more people out to hear great music made by great people committed to spreading the cruelty-free message.

Check it out!!!

Current mood:  giddy

After a couple of mammoth final nights finishing up tracking everything for 'Tales From The Killing Floor', finally the band hits Sydney today to begin mixing with Phil McKellar at The Vault.

Lots of fun to be had by all and the studio sounds great. A bit of free time in the studio means a bit of time to explore and experiment with new sounds, but who knows what will make the final mix! Not too many mishaps (thus far : ), we've only blown up the synth but that might have been a good omen??, we're still standing! All going to plan we should be mastering and printing towards the end of August...

The deal still stands for a free copy to those who have signed up to the blog!
