I'm pleased to announce the re-release of my mix The Past Is Yesterday. The follow-up cd to 2005's Stranger to the Sun, You've Seen the Light, this 67 minute mix includes a great variety of tracks; from indie-rock darlings The Beta Band and Broken Social Scene, veteran electronicists Mouse On Mars and Air, the enlightening emcee Gift of Gab, and more -- all woven together with the common thread of humanity.

This mix was produced a few years back, when I was just getting my start DJing. It's laid back, adventurous and nostalgic. You can download it, free of charge, by clicking the image below.

Enjoy!

Current mood:  blessed
Today I bid farewell to a mash-up that has been residing on this myspace page for quite some time. It's a pairing of The Flaming Lips and Four Tet which I called All We Have Is Now (She Moves She: 23). Always one of my faves, it had the third highest spins, clocking in at 1794 as of 11/19/2008, 3:37 pm.

But as one is laid to rest, another is given birth... or...uh... THREE OTHERS!

Behold! In it's place is 23 Minutes Of Saves Vol. 3, parts one, two and three. That's right 3 for the price of one... which is still free, actually. No price. All bonus.

So check out the first 23 minutes right here on myspace, or scroll down the main page to download the 48 mix in it's entirety.

Peace be with you!

PS~

In closing eulogy... here's what I had to say about All We Have Is Now (She Moves She: 23) back when it was posted:

Wayne Coyne... I've heard him say in interviews that he doesn't think rock stars should be looked to for prophetic wisdom, but that's hard to accept with lyrics like this! Here, Coyne casts himself as a time-traveling courier. His message? That we should all live for the day because soon it will all end. But, seriously, we all know Wayne's an eternal optimist, and a nut for theatrics, so... obviously, he's joking! Thus, tricking everyone into finally living in the moment... moment for moment... appreciating what we've got by convincing (reminding?) them they're gonna die (my own invented ending to the story). Wayne Coyne: Cosmic Prankster and Prophet of the Modern Age.

On Friday, November 14th, LA*Jesus and Redlight Productions proudly bring you the next installment of SHOW LOVE, with live performances by Hey Champ and Codebreaker (Milwaukee, WI), and DJ sets by LA*Jesus and special guest DJ SR-71. The event takes place at Darkroom (2210 W Chicago) and begins at 9pm. Tickets are $10 - $8 advance - and can be purchased at darkroombar.com.

It's exciting when you know a band is on the cusp of something great... it won't be long until Hey Champ [is] touring as the opener for a major act. - creamteam.tv

Hey Champ, whose sound rides a line comfortably between indie-rock and electropop, is a band quickly on the rise in Chicago. They just inked a deal with Lupe Fiasco's 1st and 15th Records; recently signed to Bandit Management, home to a diverse group of artists including Ben One, Vyle and Kevin Coval; and have produced remixes for major label artists Yeasayer and Scenario Rock. The success of their single Cold Dust Girl (and subsequent video with it's slick setting and clever production) helped land them opening gigs for Midnight Juggernauts and The Prairie Cartel, and has solidified them as one of Chicago's premiere electro-rock acts.

Unless you're so cutting edge it hurts, you probably haven't heard of Codebreaker yet -- and we're stressing the word 'yet.' -
The Washington Post

Hailing from Milwaukee, Codebreaker brings their tight dancefloor songcraft to Chicago for the next SHOW LOVE. Touring in support of their single Fire featuring Kathy Diamond on vocals (backed with the addictive R.I.M.L.), their live show promises to be deliver the goods. They've got an impressive show history to back them up: opening slots for Hot Chip, Datarock, Chromeo, Yelle, Har Mar Superstar, VHS Or Beta and many other notable touring acts. Dusty Groove America recently described their sound as 'ultra catchy early 80s post disco groove -- [with] enough modern touch to really give it a timeless feel.'

DJ sets will be provided throughout the evening by LA*Jesus and special guest DJ SR-71, who just had the privilege of opening for Hot Chip's DJ set at Smart Bar, and of hosting italo-disco legend Alexander Robotnick at Sonotheque.

Greetings!

A very special event takes place tonight at SmartBar: The 6th Annual Rock For Kids Music Mixer.

Here's a sneak peak at my contribution for this year's event -- a handmade cd packcage crafted by yours truly. I put a lot of love into this one, so you can bet folks will be lining up to place their bids.

Believe it or not, there's one kind of war that LA*Jesus encourages -- a bidding war for a good cause!

Per participation stipulations, the track listing on this one is secret, but the title is Tourism In Time and the single 50 minute track is an adventure through western psychedelic music, classic to contemporary, with a few passes through points of inspiration for both... but not necessarily what would come to mind when you hear that description. In other words, it's surprising and unique and, well, I love it.

As many of you know, Rock For Kids is a favorite local charity of mine and lots of others in the Chicago music community, as RFK provides music education to homeless and underprivileged children in Chicago. Tonight they are hosting their beloved Music Mixer, where members of Chicago's music community provide one-of-a-kind mix cds to be bid upon in a silent auction. This year will be my third year participating as a contributor, and my first year performing and helping to call the event as it happens.

Some of this year's notable contributors are*:

Miles Raymer (Chicago Reader, Mannequin Men)
Maker
The Staff of Metro and Smart Bar
Jim Newberry
Bundy K Brown
Chic a Go Go
Sybris
Scotland Yard Gospel Choir
Robert Cornelius

June 25, 2008 - Wednesday

Last night I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to DJ a private party at Juicy Wine Co. for The Chicago Cubs, hosted by Kerry Wood.

It was a who's who of Cubs players with only a handful of the big players missing... Kerry Wood (obviously), Derrek Lee, Mark DeRosa, Ryan Dempster, Aramis Ramirez, Kosuke Fukudome, Carlos Marmol, Bob Howry, Reed Johnson, Mike Fontenot, Scott Eyre... others that I'm forgetting. From my vantage point, elevated up in the dj booth, I watched as player after player arrived (with their absolutely stunning significant others), and couldn't help but grin from ear to ear each time.

The event was catered by Smoque Barbecue, quickly becoming regarded as THE BEST barbecue spot in Chicago (side note as evidence: I recently ran into and spoke with Alpana Singh, beloved host of WTTW's show Check, Please!, who said that their barbecue brisket is "the best I've ever had" --- I concur, it's fabulous). This is the second event I've DJed where Smoque was also featured, so Barry, the owner, and I have become pretty tight now and I can't wait to go actually sit down there and eat... after waiting in the line out the door, that is.

But back to The Cubs... the whole group couldn't have been nicer. The atmosphere at Juicy is very quaint and cozy, with the upstairs party room and deck-patio holding no more than 40-50 people comfortably, so those in attendance were either Cubs players or their ladies or they were one of the handful of associates. I played lots of soul (Aretha, James Brown), late 70's funk (Brothers Johnson) and early 70's rock (T-Rex), some early 80's jams (Hall & Oates, Pointer Sisters), so, had the groove flowing all night... leading up to a thrilling moment: Derrek Lee approached the booth, reached up (with his long-ass arm), shook my hand and said, "great tunes, man," smiling. OMFG!!!

Going into it, I just knew there was going to be at least one request from somebody and I was looking forward to seeing who it would be, and what they'd request. Ryan Dempster came up and asked for The Cult's Fire Woman ("fi-yahhhhhh, smoke she is a'risin'!"), which might have been for his lady. I didn't have it, but was able to download it on the spot and play it a few songs later, much to his liking, of course. Later on, as things were winding down and a smaller, but no less enthusiastic, group remained, Kerry Wood's lovely wife Sarah asked for some fun dance music and I threw some of my sure-fire selections at them... remixes of Wild Thing, Bust A Move, Jump In The Line (Shake Shake Senora), I Can't Go For That, Stronger... and things got a little crazy there for a minute.

I DJed from 7 'til 12:30 or so, and didn't get many breaks or chances to meet many of the guys, no photos (which would have been tacky anyway), but just making a good impression and getting a few shouts ("LA*Jesus in the houuuse!") was good enough for me. And, yes, I did get to meet Kerry toward the end of the night, and the conversation went something like this:

Kerry Wood: "Hey, thanks man, for doing this!"

Me: "Well, thanks for the opportunity to do this for you! It's been soooo much fun watching you guys [play]. I mean, this past weekend was unbelievable!" (referring to the Crosstown Classic vs. The White Sox, who got swept big-time!)

KW, grinning modestly: "Yeah, we're doing pretty well right now. But, we've gotta do it again here," (referring to the upcoming Crosstown Classic this weekend).

Me: "And it's down there [at US Cellular Field], so they'll be out for blood!"

KW, chuckling: "Yeah."

And that was about it. But such a thrill. A while later I was reflecting on shaking the hand of a man who throws 95 mph fastballs for the best team in baseball today, and is the best closing pitcher in the league --- and who is also a super relaxed, down-to-earth guy.

It's been a crazy couple of days... very little sleep due to the TWO gigs I had Sunday night, which had me going home with the sun coming up and the birds singing... pretty tired, but after a night like last night -- being in the presence of The Chicago Cubs, enjoying amazing food and drinking the finest wines -- who cares, right?! A little taste of The Good Life.

May 19, 2008 - Monday

Here in the CHI, these cool dudes do Tuesdays at Liar's Club. They call it Modern Love, and last week I was a guest there. I recorded my set and was pretty pleased with it, so I've decided to offer it for download. Here, in two parts, is the majority of my set from the evening, which I've predictably titled DJ LA*Jesus Live Via Modern Love (Parts One & Two).

Part One starts out all downtempo disco-house-y and gets a little minimal for a minute before picking up the pace and setting you for up for the harder edged start to Part Two. Goldfrapp, Roisin Murphy and Giorgio Morodor give way to the likes of  Hot Chip, M.I.A. and Busta Rhymes.

A new track from electro kings MSTRKRFT starts Part Two with a bang and Justice and Chromeo are not far behind. After veering back into familiar disco territory, I branch out and get all Bmore for a minute with that hot "Jump In The Line" remix from Oklahoma City's Dance Robots Dance and some sweet mixes from two of Chi-City's finest: Zebo and Trew. Us djs have heard that Gui Boratto track a ton by now, but what better way for a DJ LA*Jesus set to end than with "Beautiful Life"?

So, you've been tagged?

Here's how you play: Once you've been tagged you have to write a blog with 12 weird, random, facts or habits about yourself. At the end, choose 6 people to be tagged, list their names and why you tagged them. Don't forget to leave them a comment saying (You're It!) and to go read your blog. You can not tag the person that tagged you. Since you can't tag me back let me know when you are done so that I can go read YOUR blog answers...

1. I was a chubby kid. You'd barely recognize me.

2. I'm a pretty excellent shot with a pellet gun (never shot a real one though).

3. Growing up a huge fan of professional wrestling, I can't resist the urge to occasionally watch it.

4. I enjoy washing dishes, and have a very specific system for doing them.

5. I used to be "goth-industrial". Black hair. Eyeliner. Doc Martins. The whole nine.

6. I'm terrified of heights (yikes, vertigo!), but still love rollercoasters.

7. On my first trip to L.A. several years back, I met Ian Petrella, aka Ralphie's little brother Randy in the movie A Christmas Story, and got the opportunity to tell him that he had my favorite line in the whole movie... "Whoopie! A Zeppelin!"

8. My middle name is Gary, my dad's name.

9. At Christmas time last year, after a grueling series of matches, I finally beat my dad at ping-pong, thus breaking his long-standing undefeated streak in our family's home (sorry for the gloating, pop).

10. Somehow, I have never had a cavity.

11. My little sister Sara and I have very similarly misaligned teeth.

12. Despite the moniker, I'm not from L.A.

Waiting to hear from:

Sara Euhus - my fearless little sister who just loves when I actually myspace her something.

Saverio Truglia - my best dude friend... he's full of random things to share about himself.

Rachael Perrotta - my roomie. She's got lots of surprising things in store for you... depending on how far she wants to take it.

Melissa Krohn - former roomie. She needs something to keep her occupied right now.

The Chicago chapter of Iraq Veterans Against the War needs YOU to come shake it in the name of bringing an end to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Many of Chicago's most in- demand djs have come together to bring you an undeniably hot party.

Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) is a national organization of
Iraq-era veterans and active duty GI's. There are chapters around the
country and the Chicago chapter has over 30 members. The three demands
of the organization are:

  • Immediate withdrawal of all occupying forces in Iraq, including contractors;
  • Reparations for the human and structural damages Iraq has suffered; and
  • Full benefits, adequate healthcare (including mental health), and other supports for returning servicemen and women.

The group's upcoming project, Winter Soldier: Iraq and Afghanistan,
will feature over 250 members gathering in DC for the testimony
of veterans who served on the ground in these occupations. All
proceeds from this event will go toward travel and housing costs to
make this historic event take place.

DJ LA*Jesus Presents
SHOW LOVE

with special guests

MATT ROAN  DANCE PARTY MAGIC
ALEXANDER BASSETT & PROTMAN  FAKEBEAT.COM
ASH IN PENSACOLA  (LIVE)

Chicago, heads up! The next SHOW LOVE event, presented by DJ LA*Jesus, is scheduled for Friday, March 14 at Darkroom and promises to bring the goods. Headlining the evening is none other than URB Next 1000 artist and dance party magician Matt ROAN. Matt's been one of the busiest dj's in the city lately, holding down nights at Le Passage, Empire Liquors and Tuman's with his fellow Dance Party Magic cohorts, E6 and B$. Last year, he hit the big-time with an appearance at Lollapalooza. A mixed bag of indie-rock, hip-hop and club tracks comprise ROAN's "all-school" style; count on body movin' hits being in his lesson plans.

Supporting are Alexander Bassett and PROTMAN, curators of the Emergency Broadcast Afterhours nights, and producers of Fakebeat.com, a developing music culture magazine. They'll be spinning sets of electro and italo disco-funk that'll make you wanna wiggle.

Before Matt ROAN hits the decks, he'll hit the skins as drummer of Ash In Pensacola, an indie-rock quintet producing tracks that call to mind, at times, the jangly guitars and vocal harmonies of The New Pornographers, but with a little less sunshiny zeal. They'll be performing songs from their forthcoming cd Gut Rehab to be released on Crushed Red Records.

Galina Shevchenko has been providing live video mixing for Smartbar, Sonotheque, and many other hotspots, and will be at Darkroom providing an eclectic visual backdrop to match the burnin' beats.

...and OF COURSE, event promoter, open-mouth smiler, and all-around-good-guy DJ LA*Jesus will be present in the "whites n' lights", spinning funky party jams imparted to him from on high.

Whoa, Chicago! SHOW LOVE!!!
