Coquine / Truth [Tes La Rok RMX]

Blackacre (UK), ACRE011

The Frenchman’s back on Blackacre with his distinctive sound, going quite
militant with ‘Coquine’. Opening with a tough-edged citric stab riff, a
little senorita vocal sample and some heavy kicks herald a heavyweight
drop, with rock-solid walls of sub bass and evolution of the topline. Von
D slowly builds energy before the breakdown into a luxuriant chord
progression. Tes La Rok does the remix duties on the flip, painting an
expansive soundscape of reverb and delay to surround the crisp breaks and
nutty stairway sub-line.

Following a triumphant appearance on Argon, Paris-based Von D delivers this tough double-header on the ever-excellent Blackacre Records. ‘Echolow’ opens proceedings with an unashamedly classic-sounding stab riff, layers of delay and alien-language vocal snippets combining before the rock-hard drop – militant 4/4 with a ceramic snare and creeping hats over pure bass strata. ‘Truth’ once again draws for some vintage sounds, Jean-Michel Jarre supplying the synths pads as scuttery percussion shuffles and live snares bounce off the faintly acidic bassline. Quality throughout
