Possible Smashing Pumpkins Reunion

Billy Corgan (photo by Ros O'Gorman)

by Eve Jenkin  @ Undercover

January 20 2006

Seeing as though Billy Corgan's various projects haven't exactly lived up to expectation, a reunion of the ex-Smashing Pumpkiner's former band seems more likely than ever.

The rumours of a possible reformation begun with an advert Corgan put out in the Chicago Tribune last year. It read: "When I played the final Smashing Pumpkins show on the night of December 2, 2000, I walked off the stage believing that I was forever leaving a piece of my life behind. I naively tried to start a new band, but found that my heart wasn't in it. I moved away to pursue a love that I once had but got lost. So I moved back home to heal what was broken in me, and to my surprise I found what I was looking or. I found that my heart is in Chicago, and that my heart is in the Smashing Pumpkins.

"For a year now I have walked around with a secret, a secret I chose to keep. But now I want you to be among the first to know that I have made plans to renew and revive the Smashing Pumpkins. I want my band back, and my songs, and my dreams. In this desire I feel I have come home again."

Now, according to NME.com the comeback is as good as confirmed, with Smashing Pumpkins planning to return to the stage at California's Coachella festival on April 30. Corgan has kept in contact with second bassist Melissa Auf De Maur and drummer Jimmy Chamberlain, and posted an ambiguous statement on his website recently which has fuelled rumours of a reunion. "The surprise I have in store for you all will be announced soon enough," he wrote. "Hold on to your horses. After all, good things surely come to those who wait.... Don't you just love the suspense?"

Bryan Harvey found dead with wife and children in Virginia home

Bryan Harvey, singer/guitarist for the Eighties blues-based rock duo House of Freaks, was found dead with his wife and two young daughters in the basement of the family's Richmond, Virginia, home over the weekend.

Harvey, 49, and his family were discovered after Johnny Hott, formerly the drummer for the defunct band, arrived to attend a New Year's Day party and discovered the house was on fire. Firefighters called to the scene discovered the bodies. Local news outlets reported that the victims' throats had been cut and their bodies bound.

The case is currently under investigation, with no suspects yet named.

Harvey and Hott formed House of Freaks in 1984, with a minimalist sound and lineup that foreshadowed latter-era blues rock duos like the White Stripes and Black Keys. "We got shit all the time about not having a bass player," Harvey told Rolling Stone in 2004. "I mean, it was our fucking band. Did people hassle Flock of Seagulls for not having a guitar player? I was watching Freaky Friday with my daughter recently, and a character is talking about the White Stripes. She said, 'Get a bass player.'"

Beginning with 1987's Monkey on a Chain Gang, House of Freaks released five albums and scored a leftfield radio hit with 1992's "Rocking Chair" before disbanding in the mid-Nineties. Harvey also collaborated with Hott and former Dream Syndicate singer Steve Wynn in the early-Nineties band Gutterball. He performed with his most recent group, NrG Krysys, on New Year's Eve in Richmond.

Richard Ashcroft Album on the Way

Richard Ashcroft

by Eve Jenkin @ Undercover

Ex-Verve front man Richard Ashcroft has set the date for his first solo album since 2002 “Keys To The World”.

The album is his first on Parlophone records and will be released on February 5th, with debut single “Break The Night With Colour” hitting Aussie radio on January 9th. Ashcroft’s biggest hit with The Verve, “Bittersweet Symphony,” sampled The Rolling Stones classic “The Last Time” without permission – The Verve subsequently received zero revenue for the track.

As a solo artist however critics have sung Ashcroft’s praises, and he has even won the adoration of Coldplay’s Chris Martin. He teamed up with past collaborator and producer Chris Potter once more for the recording of “Keys To The World”, which took place in London.

The track listing for “Keys To The World” is as follows:

1. Why Not Nothing?
2. Music Is Power
3. Break the Night With Colour
4. Words Just Get in the Way
5. Keys to the World
6. Sweet Brother Malcolm
7. Cry Til the Morning
8. Why Do Lovers?
9. Simple Song
10. World Keeps Turning

The Vines Ready Third Album

The Vines (photo by Ros O'Gorman)

by Paul Cashmere @ Undercover

The Vines manager Andy Kelly has confirmed the band is well on the way to completing a third album and it will be released in early 2006.

At a posting at The Vines forum, Kelly says "Thanks a lot for all of your help and support over the past year, and thanks to everyone for their patience. I promise the wait will be worth it. The guys finish recording in the first week of January, and the album will be mixed by the end of January. The very exciting news is that we are looking at a March/April release date. Please see the attachment from the chaps for everyone, and again, thanks to all of you for your support, the band really genuinely appreciate it - as do I."

The news of the impending release is good news for fans after the band imploded after an incident on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno in May 2004 and again at a concert in Sydney a few weeks later when bass player Patrick Matthews threw a tantrum and stormed off stage.

Their US tour was cancelled shortly after and then in November, singer Craig Nichols was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome, a condition found in people who had seemingly normal intelligence and language development, but who also exhibited autistic-like behaviors and marked deficiencies in social and communication skills.

The Vines second album 'Winning Days' was a commercial failure following the worldwide success they had with the debut 'Highly Evolved'.

Flaming Lips Get All Fired Up for 2006

Flaming Lips (photo by Ros O'Gorman)

by Eve Jenkin @ Undercover

The Flaming Lips have kept rather quiet in the last few months, but that's all about to change come 2006 when they unleash a spate of exciting new releases.

The first on the band's agenda will be a special edition CD/DVD of their 1999 album "The Soft Bulletin" titled "The Soft Bulletin 5.1" released on the 31st of January. It will feature the entire album in Surround Sound as well as rare tracks "1000 Foot Hands", "The Captain", "Satellite Of You" and "Buggin". But that's not all - The Flaming Lips have also included recordings of various live performances. The videos for "Race For The Prize" and "Waiting For Superman" make up the DVD component.

But before the reissue's release The Flaming Lips have made available some previously unreleased tracks on iTunes such as "Fight Test", songs from live radio EP "Yoshimi Wins", different versions of "Bad Days", the "Brainville" EP and many more.

The question all fans are undoubtedly asking however is "What of the new album "At War With The Mystics" Well that, my friends, will be arriving in April 2006, with debut single "W.A.N.D" released January 10.

You can catch The Flaming Lips live in 2006 when they co-headline Los Angeles New Years Eve concert Giant Village, alongside The Black Eyed Peas, Death Cab For Cutie and The Crystal Method.

Sing-Sing Most people have never heard of Sing-Sing, especially in Australia.

After a lot of trouble during the release of their debut, 'The Joy Of Sing-Sing', the band is distributing its second album, 'Sing-Sing And I', independently. "We've chosen our own press people and radio people this time," explains Emma Anderson. "They've done pretty well so far. It's quite encouraging. So we'll see what happens once it hits proper distribution around the world."

Anderson forms half of the British duo along with singer Lisa O'Neill and was also founding co-guitarist/singer of the legendary Lush, one of the shoegazing scene's best and longest running groups. The new album has been well received, but O'Neill has recently become pregnant so any plans to tour outside of the UK have slowed considerably. "So that's kind of out of the question, but we both work full-time so it was always going to be difficult anyway." Anderson explains that O'Neill is a graphic designer, while she works for a PR company. "We're just doing acoustic sets because, with time and money and Lisa being pregnant, it just makes things easier. But it's also working really well. We have a cellist and people are really enjoying it. The songs were written acoustically, so they sound fine stripped back like that."

Although I have Sing-Sing's debut album, having imported it after hearing their music overseas, I wasn't sure if 'The Joy Of Sing Sing' ever came out in Australia. "Oh it did, actually," assures Anderson. "But it didn't have any promotion whatsoever."

So begins Anderson's explanation of their poor experience with the Poptones label, owned by Alan McGee (late of Creation Records). "We signed to Poptones here in the UK, and it was through them that it came out in Australia. I can't even begin to tell you..." she gasps. "Well there was no promotion, because we were never asked to do an interview. It was kind of a mistake that we signed with them, because Alan McGee is a very old friend of mine. We were on another label when we made 'The Joy Of Sing-Sing' and then we were dropped but they gave us the album. So I asked Alan if he could put it out, and he was very enthusiastic, but unfortunately the people that work at the office there hated it, so it just got completely ignored. I didn't think kind of situation could exist, that you could sign to a label, and they would avoid your record on purpose. I thought labels wanted to sell records and make money. But no, it was really bizarre. It was just a real shame, because it was a good record, you know?"

I know: and the new 'Sing-Sing And I' is even better, kicking off with the poppy Lover, before journeying through atmospheric songs like Going Out Tonight. A couple of the songs were mixed by Alan Moulder. "Yeah, I worked with him when I was in Lush, and he kind of did this as a bit of a favour, which was nice, since we can't afford his rates!"

Most of the songs on the album are individually credited. "We never write together," says Anderson. "We kind of write songs separately and then bring them to the recording process. We do throw ideas around and write little bits and parts for each other's songs but the main body and melody is written by one or the other. And I'd always written like that, to be honest. In Lush it was a little more rigid, it was all pretty much written before I went into the studio whereas in Sing-Sing, things are a bit looser, which is actually quite nice. I found it hard to do that at first, but it makes it more enjoyable."

Anderson doesn't mind people asking her about her days with Lush. "No I don't get sick of it," she says. "I think its fine. I get sick when people say 'Are Lush going to reform?'" she laughs sardonically. "I haven't had that in an interview, but sometimes you get emails, just asking if we'll reform, and I think 'for God's sake', you know? But I don't think it's bad that people bring up Lush at all, because it was something that I did for such a long time. The thing is that we did split up nine years ago now, so the relevance is slightly less now than when we were first starting Sing-Sing."

Michelle Branch Lashes Out At Maverick

Michelle Branch

by Paul Cashmere @ Undercover

December 8 2005

Michelle Branch has slammed her label Maverick Records claiming they refused to release her latest album because she was pregnant and that she was pushed into recording with Santana.

About her lack of new music, Branch posted to fans “I understand that you are frustrated with the fact that there isn't any music for you to listen to. Don't you think Jessica and I are frustrated too?? We finished this record over a year ago and were sent on a lame ass tour we didn't want to be on. It was a horrible idea to headline a show playing music that nobody had ever heard. Maverick wanted to make a quick buck, and unfortunately, we were obligated by contract to do so. I was 5 months pregnant when we started that tour and believe me...it was the last place I wanted to be”.

Her rant also mouthed off at her most recent work with Santana, “I’m Feeling You” from his ‘All That I Am’ album. “I got pushed into doing a Santana song I didn't want to do (I didn't write it either, Shanks wanted me to sing it so bad, that was a bargaining tool), Maverick wouldn't let me do it unless Jess was on it so they would get "free" promotion for a record they didn't even understand or believe in for the most part. The record wasn't released because Maverick didn't want me promoting an album pregnant. they thought it would look bad to my young fans...bull” she said.

In 2002, she sang ‘Game Of Love’ on his ‘Shaman’ album.

Branch released her debut album ‘The Spirit Room’ in 2001. The follow-up, ‘Hotel Paper’ was released in 2003.

The fans are still waiting for The Wreckers debut album to surface. To date, just one song ‘Good Kind’ has been released via the ‘One Tree Hill’ soundtrack.
