Tribute to reggae icon Pete Tosh
By ERROL NAZARETH - Sun Media

"This guitar is firing shots at all them devil disciples," reggae icon Peter Tosh is quoted as saying in the book accompanying the 3-CD set, Peter Tosh: Honorary Citizen, that came out 20 years ago.

"Music is my weapon to fight against apartheid, nuclear war, and those gang-Jah criminals."

Tosh was easily one of the most explicitly political musicians to emerge from Jamaica.

He held strong opinions on political corruption, police brutality, apartheid, and, most famously, advocated smoking marijuana, and he never minced his words -- whether in interviews or in song.

Here's how fearless he was.Back in '78 before a crowd of 30,000 that included then Prime Minister Michael Manley, Tosh smoked a spliff and berated the PM for 30 minutes for refusing to legalize marijuana!

A year before Peter Tosh: Honorary Citizen came out, Tosh was killed after gunmen burst into his Jamaica home and shot up the place.

He was only 42.

Reggae authority Roger Steffens, who co-produced it and authored the liner notes, told me, "(Peter's) comment that his songs are not smiling songs is one of his most profound quotes. He wasn't here to make people smile or be happy."
Songs such as No Mercy, which addresses police brutality; Black Dignity, with its lyrics, "Live black, love black, think black," and his attack on Christianity in the song You Can't Fool Me Again, prove this.

"He was in the frontlines of the Black Power movement in the Caribbean in the '60s, and his heroes were (Black Panther Party members) Angela Davis and H. Rap Brown," adds Steffens, who was a close friend of Tosh's.

Tomorrow night at the El Mocambo, several local reggae acts will honour Tosh at an event being billed as Another Peter Tosh Tribute.

Headlining the show is the House of David Gang, who've been turning out '70s and '80s-style Jamaican reggae for a good 15 years.

King Selah, Jahlin, Tanny Meadows, Rasta Reuben& Selassie I Power, Fredlocks Asher, and The High Plains Drifter are also on the bill.
10 p.m. Admission is $10 with a canned food donation/$15 without.

It's been quite an eventful summer - House of David Gang has been playing all over Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia - playing at some of the finest festival in the Country including Salty Jam, Evolve Festival, Come Together Festival, The Beaches Jazz Festival, Periwinkle Festival, The Freedom Festival and as well as club and private events.

Taking Gisto (of the Wassabi Collective) on tour was just a treat, we locked ourselves up in a cabin in the woods and recorded some new songs, including the newest song on our Myspace playlist "Come with Me" (the New Brunswick Song).

The song features Raffa Dean on percussion (who replaced Collin Edwards this summer who is now fully recovered from a hip replacement), King Selah on Vocals, Chris Bottomley on bass and vocals, Jay Cleary and Gisto on guitars - and produced by Gisto at Jemseg Studios.  It's a really fun song and it show the band's love for New Brunswick!

So check us out on tour this fall - we will be playing one of our most exciting gigs yet at The Harves Jazz and Blues Festival in Fredericton - don't miss it!

A writer for 24 Hours in Toronto saw this post (when googling the
Toronto Song Contest) and called me up earlier this week to interview
me and the House of David gang for an article she is writing about the

http://www.toronto.ca/175/song_contest.htm

In honour of the City’s 175th anniversary, the City of Toronto is
hosting the Toronto SongContest. We’re looking for an original song
that is evocative of our wonderful city, a song that will pay homage to
Toronto’s amazing spirit and its unparalleled diversity.

Compose your song using any lyrical music genre, e.g., pop, rock, folk,
roots, hip hop, rap, jazz, world. Songs must be less than four minutes
in length. You must submit your song in MP3 format, the lyrics to your
song and a short biography (200 words or less) to Sonicbids – the
official website of the Toronto Song Contest.

So The House of David Gang has been working on our contribution to this
contest and we've posted a rough demo of the song on our myspace page...

it's called "Toronto, Ontario" - we would love your feedback. In what we call "Three the hard way" configuration, we present a trio version of House of David Gang demo-ing at Priceless Audio in Toronto.

Bob Marley
http://www.bobmarley.com

On February 7, 2008, International music star Bob Marley would have been 64 years old if he had not succumbed to cancer on Monday May 11, 1981 at the young age 36-years-old.

Today almost anywhere in the world when the name Bob Marley is mentioned it is recognized by old and young. He remains enormously popular and well known all over the world. Reggae's most transcendent and iconic figure, Bob Marley was the first Jamaican artist to achieve international superstardom, in the process introducing the music of his native island nation to the far-flung corners of the globe. Marley's music gave voice to the day-to-day struggles of the Jamaican experience, vividly capturing not only the plight of the country's impoverished and oppressed but also the devout spirituality that remains their source of strength.

His songs of faith, devotion, and revolution created a legacy that continues to live on not only through the music of his extended family but also through generations of artists the world over touched by his genius.

With a special cast of Toronto Musicians, Djs and MCs, a celebration of Bob Marley's legacy of music, peace and love will take at LEE's PALACE on Saturday February 9th, 2008

Featuring King Selah

THE HOUSE OF DAVID GANG is a Toronto-based reggae outfit that delivers late 70s and early 80s style Jamaican reggae classics . Formed in Toronto over 15 years ago, the band is fronted by seasoned reggae veteran King Selah and whose members have included members of Resinators, Irie Band, Explorer Band, Revelation, Sellasie I Power and many others. The House of David Gang got it's name from a House that a group of like minded Toronto Reggae Musicians lived in and who held after-hour reggae parties for several years which developed the musicians into some of Toronto's Top session players. For the past 15 years King Selah and the House of David Gang have hosted the Toronto Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer Tributes which have helped bring light to Toronto's burgeoning roots rock reggae scene. Now with a new line-up - The House of David Gang faithfully recreates the Bob Marley Sound - which includes 2 guitarists, 2 keyboardists and a strong rhythm section of Jah-Lin (drums) and Uncledropsi (bass).

Michael Garrick

Frequently @ The Original Motorcycle Company, Micheal is a veteran of Toronto's reggae scene and has entertained local and international audiences for many years. DJ Chocolate and Patrick Roots

BY Elizabeth Mitkos April 10, 2008 00:04

WHO Local jungle and Brazilian hip-hop spinner DJ Chocolate and reggae veteran DJ Patrick Roots have only been working the decks together since 2004, but their magical, rhythmic sets sound like they've been mixing together for much longer. They put smiles on the faces of reggae and non-reggae audiences alike and always support local artists on each of their radio shows — Chocolate on CKLN 88.1 FM every Monday and Patrick Roots on CIUT 89.5 FM hosting Reggae Riddims every Wednesday. Patrick's been a major force at the U of T station for 20 years, when he got his start playing high-school dances in 1988. Chocolate first stepped up to the decks and radio mic in 1994 and went on to start Toronto's all-women DJ collective Chicks Dig It, open the first woman-owned vinyl mastering and recording studio Scratch Free and manage artists including the Dream Band and Kidd Rasta & The Peacemakers for her own company, Natty Posse Entertainment. She and Patrick crossed paths in radio and naturally teamed up, playing the reggae festival circuit, events like Harvest Festival and Promise's Cherry Beach Sundays. Along with their residencies at Thymeless on the first Friday of every month and on the third Saturday of every month, Chocolate is working with BrownEyes Entertainment on concerts (like the Luciano, Queen Ifrica and Etana show at Sound Academy on May 11), a new monthly gig starting in June with Progress Negus at Harlem, with Juno-nominated reggae artist Lyndon John X for IMOK enterprises and managing the all-woman reggae outfit known as the Natty Posse Band. Meanwhile, Patrick Roots is gearing up for the massive live-to-air Jamaica Day on CIUT July 26.

WHAT Reggae, dub and jungle. "Anything that moves your heart, mind and hips," says Chocolate.

WHERE April 12 at Nufunk.ca's Tribute to The Wailers (Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer) with House of David Gang, Tonya P, Empress Deeqa and more. El Mocambo (464 Spadina Av). Doors 9pm. $10 with canned food donation.

FAVOURITE RECORD OF ALL TIME Chocolate: "That's impossible! Off the top of my head, maybe the Best of Luciano 'cause I love every single song, or the Bob Marley Songs of Freedom box set." Patrick: Bob Marley, "Positive Vibration."

FAVOURITE RECORD RIGHT NOW Chocolate: Queen Ifrica "Fyah Muma." Patrick: Etana "Roots."

FAVOURITE WEBSITE RIGHT NOW www.dancehallmusic.de and www.jamrid.com "For their riddim databases [to find] the name of current riddims, songs, artists, producers and labels," says Chocolate. "It's harder to keep track of which tunes are [what] than it is to mix them in a club!"
Patrick: www.stoplying.ca "The stuff they won't tell you on the news."

DIGITAL OR ANALOG? "Analog all the way baby!" says Patrick. "It just sounds better, warmer and phatter. Really, for reggae, giving up the low-end harmonics is sacrilegious. We both play CDs too out of necessity, but Chocolate is still well-known as the Vinyl Woman."

WHAT IS VITAL TO YOUR DAILY ROUTINE?
Chocolate: Lactose-free mochaccinos from Second Cup.
Patrick: Music.

WHAT GLOBAL ISSUE CONCERNS YOU MOST RIGHT NOW? "We just did a fundraiser for the Sickle Cell Association of Ontario," says Chocolate. "Sickle Cell disorders affect millions of people all over the world and awareness thereof is crucial. We're going to do our fundraiser for the SCAO every year, and make an international recording project within the global reggae community that can benefit equivalent organizations the world over."

WHAT IS YOUR RING TONE RIGHT NOW?
Chocolate: Desmond Dekker, "Israelites."

WHAT ACTOR WOULD PLAY YOU IN A BIOPIC? "If Nicole Kidman, Janis Joplin and Jack Black could be melded into one person, they'd be the perfect representation of me," says Chocolate.
Patrick: Denzel Washington.

WHAT ARE YOU READING RIGHT NOW?
Chocolate: "Bharati Mukherjee's Desirable Daughters — It's my week off, so I don't have to read anything technical or legal and she writes so beautifully, she could make the phone book sound profound!"
Patrick: "Danny Scheinmann's Random Acts of Heroic Love. Chocolate's grandfather recommended it and he is a very wise and insightful man."
