On 11-27-09, my dear friend and the drummer of my Heart 'n Soul Angel Calling Gospel Studio recording, Bruce Royal, posted a blog on the drum network, entitled, "The Spirit and History of Jazz, Blues, and Gospel as told through the music of Calvin Newborn".   What a prestigeous spiritual gesture that was.   Especially, after Bruce had put the songs I recorded right in the pocket.   The only other person I know would have done that is my dad, Phineas "Finas" Newborn.   God bless his soul.   He made Elvis dance, and also made elephant's dance, to his "Mash" drumbeat.   Thanks a million, Bruce.   I love you, maddly!

THE BLACK HOLE

If I was a comedian, I would tell a joke something like this:

Scientist’s have proven that evolution came from what they named a "Big Bang". That is, til recently some have proven that everything came from what they named the "Black Hole".

I could have told them that a long time ago. I’ve always known that Adam and Eve were made in God’s image in the "garden of Eden". That had to be in Africa, the hottest place in the world, where fruits and vegetables grew that could sustain immortality.

They had it made until they ate the "forbidden fruit", and were put in a wilderness to have children and to die. Eve’s first child came from where everything else had. What was that? A "Black Hole". In plain Ebonic’s, a black woman’s poon-tang.

If God made Adam in his image He, She, or It must have also come from a "Black Hole", which scientists say is the source of all things physical and non-physical. The physical must have come from a "Black Hole and the non-physical from a "Black Soul".

I guess that’s why some people think all blacks have rhythm, and that soul is black. So what?!
America’s President in the white-house is black. Who cares . . . nobody else wants the job.

Nowadays, skin complecion don't count.   When I lived in Harlem in the '60's, because of my skin complecion, they used to say I looked like Malcolm X, "Big Red".   Now they say I look like Fred Sanford on television, "Red Fox".   I usually do this comedy skit to get a laff, looking up with one hand up and one on my chest, "Ohh . . . I'm comin' to join you Elizabeth, this is the 'Big One'!   Unfortunately, for my dear friend Red Fox, who I was stranded in New Orleans with on the first all black rock 'n roll show "Rocket '88'",
it was the 'Big One'.   I might finish the joke with, "Don't hit me with that Bible again!    Superstition might make me add,
I hope this ain't the "Big One".   I am proud to be Red and I'm also 'Black and I'm proud' to have a Red grandson at Cornell University studying International Law.   Kenyata II is a champion runner who could one day run for President.

Without either of the "seven deadly sin's", the complecion of the world's only race, the human race, is a spectrum of diverse colors of compassion and love.

My mother, respectfully called mama Rose, might have named me Calvin after the President Calvin Coolidge, who died the year I was born, in 1933.   She also gave me the middle name Edwin.   Her African and Irish Jesuit ancestor's soulful intuition might have told her I would be a winner like King Edward.   And, it might have also told her that I would see a cool-calm-collected Barack Obama President and family in the white-house.  Though, she might have named me after the great theologian John Calvin who was also cool, I'll just settle for a nickname like Mr. Cool . . . or Kenyata, which means 'musician' in the first African language, Swahili.

My logic and reasoning also tells me that my grandfather's parents name was changed to Newborn in order to get rid of their slave-name and to have their own original surname.   I added an "e" to Newborne on 'facebook' to make it explicitedly a name and not a newborn baby; I am the last of "Memphis Jazz's Finest".  At age 76, I am, indubitably, old born. Gigglely ha ha ha ha!

In my youth I lived and learned in omnifarious music.   Today,I understand that gospel is my salvation.   Therefore, I am currntly recording a "Heart 'n Soul" album.   Afterwards, I intend to record a jazz album of "Art 'n Soul".   "Heart 'n Woe" is one of the gospel songs I am recording along with "I Can Fly", "Glory", "The Forgotten Song", "Wild Dreams", "7th Heaven", and "Mama Rose".   This album is as serious as the 7th, and final, heart attack of my dad Phineas "Finas" Newborn.

THE GLORY OF SOUL

Early on, a heavy sack-a-woe gave me the heart to slide and fly on my knees, as if praying,  winning nightly "Battle's of the Blues'" by competing with noted blues guitarists.   Decades later, a photograph of me was named "Flying Calvin in 1952" by the National Smithsonian Institution of American History, in Washington, D. C..   They used it for their "Social Crossroads/Rock 'n Soul project.   Rock 'n Soul was acknowledged in a Memphis museum and Rock 'n Roll flourished.

The "Heart 'n Woe" I received, after my first guitar teacher refused to teach me because of bigotry, was the "Blue Prelude" that gave me the heart to become "Flying Calvin in 1952".   I then migrated to New York and studied classical guitar while recording and playing Omnifarious Music(of all sorts, types, and kinds) .    Some wild dreams motivated me to write Clazz (classical jazz) and to record original music I call Art 'n Soul.   I released the cd "Flying Calvin/UpCity", in 1998, on my own Omnifarious Music Incorporated label.

I also composed a classical jazz suite I named "Clazz" for renown classical guitarist Lily Afshar.   In a wild dream I had, we painstakingly climbed with a group of renown music critics, that included an alien from aother planet, to the top of a mountain.   We were presented  a "Universal Award" for our Clazz and Art 'n Soul contributions to the music world.

Then, while traveling to perform at the New Orleans Fine Arts Center, I decided to play "7th Heaven".   I had been inspired and motivated after another wild dream to write the song.   In the dream, a seven feet tall group of Watusi Africans danced to seven-four time drum rhythms amazingly graceful.   I awoke with tears in my eyes and wrote it as I felt it, in 7/4 time.   It can be heard on my "Flying Calvin/UpCity" cd.   I also played it on the African Village stage for the Jax, Fl. annual 2008 "World of Nations" event.   A talented local African American vocalist named Toscha Comeaux, along with  African drums and dancer, made the performance authentic.

Blues and Rock 'n Roll guitarists like Muddy, T. Bone, Hooker, and Hendrix gave the music world "raw" soul.   Charlie Christian, Django, Wes, Bird, Diz, Miles,Trane, and Brotha' Ray gave the music world jazz, bebop, and heart 'n soul.   I chose to name my inpirational music Clazz and Art 'n Soul.
