Jimmy Tamborello makes music under the names of James Figurine, with Ben Gibbard & Jenny Lewis as The Postal Service, and also as Dntel. Jimmy has made a Dntel album for Sub Pop and it comes out on April 24th, 2007. (It may be of some interest to you that Kelly Clarkson, Captain Sensible, and Eric Bogosian were all born on this day. Or maybe not.)
Thick with Tamborello's signature electronic washes and genius beat placement, Dumb Luck is an album lyrically as much about human distance as connection. With vocal contributions from friends Jenny Lewis (Rilo Kiley), Edward Droste (Grizzly Bear), Valerie Trebeljahr and Markus Acher (Lali Puna), Mia Doi Todd, Grant Olsen and Sonya Westcott (Arthur & Yu), Andrew Broder (Fog), Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes) and Christopher and Jennifer Gunst (Mystic Chords of Memory), the organic instrumentation by Chris Hathwell (drummer, Moving Units) and Paul Larson (guitarist, The Minor Canon), Dumb Luck is manipulated, chopped and pasted amidst Tamborello's skittish beats, house clicks, organ washes and dreamily pixelated symphonies. The result is at once understatedly epic, ethereal and concrete.
Jimmy is a curious and interesting dude and he's created what he calls "a 40 minute drone piece," which is really him alone in the studio doing what he does in long-format. Sub Pop is giving away copies of this on CD if you pre-order the record at subpop.com and they are super limited so hurry up.

The Postal Service have recorded a version of John Lennon's classic, "Grow
Old With Me." The song will be available for download December 10 and all
sales benefit Amnesty International's Human Rights efforts. It can be
downloaded at Amnesty International.
The song is part of a series of singles called "Make Some Noise." Each
single is a cover of a John Lennon song and other artists included in the
first phase of the series are The Cure who cover "Love," the Black Eyed Peas
("Power To the People"), and the Snow Patrol ("Isolation'').
All songs will originally be offered only as downloads but expect the series
to be released on CD at some point in 2006.

BOO! This fall's sweetest - and scariest - benefit song is DO THEY KNOW IT'S HALLOWE'EN. This single features a star-studded ensemble (Beck, Sonic Youth,The Arcade Fire, David Cross, Smoosh, Postal Service's Jimmy Tamborello,Elvira, and more) known as the NORTH AMERICAN HALLOWEEN PREVENTION INITIATIVE. Both a trick and a treat, this song is a satire - as well as a charity-benefit song with all proceeds being donated to UNICEF. Check it out on vice-recordings
