Christmas Jam, December 2008

I recently had the pleasure of spending the weekend of Dec 12-13 in Asheville, NC (lovely town) sitting in at the Warren Haynes Christmas Jam. Many people know the jam happens every year but it was my first time out thanks to Warren's invitation. What a party! Gov't Mule, The Allman Bros., Derek Trucks, Ben Harper, Michael Franti, Joan Osborne, Ruthie Foster, and many more.

I played with Warren, The Allmans, Michael Franti, and a little with Ruthie and Joan. So much talent and the vibe, the care, the attitude, generosity and warmth shown by everyone was rather stunning. It is a fundraising event for Habitat For Humanity and everyone gives their time and energy gratis, especially warrant, his wife, Stefani and their whole camp.

The backstage was a couple of football fields in size with catering, a free bar for participants, a couple of rehearsal rooms to get the jams together with amps and drums, screens to view the show and a tour bus to relax in as well as couches and chairs, tables, etc.

John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin, you know) played with several artists (myself included_ and truly brought something special to the event. Gov't Mule finished the evening with J.P.J. playing Zeppelin tunes and may I say: Everyone was glued to it and blown away!! Warren absolutely killed and everyone was grinning ear to ear on stage and off! I've not seen anything like that in quite some time and I hope I see it again. Warren, The Mule and J.P.J. have got to do that some more!

A great saxophone player, Karl Denson was also a highlight for me as well as the singing of Joan Osborne and Ruthie Foster. (I'll be out with Ruthie at the end of January through the beginning of March.) Warren invited me to come back next year and bring my own band, so I'll look forward to that next December.

Thanks again, Warren… I had a ball.
