With doom-metal.com electing "Journey Through Lands Unknown" as album of the month in June, I took some time to collect this amusing anthology of contradicting aphorisms about the album and hereby present it for your pleasure:
…judging by “Journey Through Lands Unknown” they are
a very special band. This album is so different, and it’s only when you come
upon its like that you realize what a joy it is to hear something with its own
sound and identity... (PowerPlay Rock and Metal Magazine).
VS
Average. That’s the only way one can describe the new
release of doomsters Pantheist
"Journey Through Lands Unknown"…
(Rocking.gr)
The sound of a steam locomotive pulling away from a station
is the perfect way to start this musical journey, really setting the scene
beautifully… (PowerPlay Rock and Metal Magazine).
VS
Pantheist’s third full-length starts off incongruously with
the sounding of the Doom Metal Choo Choo Train, for a completely unknown
reason...(Metalireland.com)
Not so much a progression as a development of its predecessor… (Zero Tolerance)
VS
This will surely upset fans as it’s such a drastic change
(Metalarchives.com)
…highlight is closer 'Mourning The Passing Of Certainty'
which starts with an ecclesiastical chant before segueing into a middle-eastern
tinged melody….(Zero Tolerance)
VS
The last track “Mourning The Passing Of Certainty” is …
probably one of the weakest tracks on the album to finish on which is a bit
disappointing... (Rockandmetaldomain.co.uk)
… this is an
ever-changing, but never fragmented work of art (Metal
Hammer UK)
VS
Never have I had so much fun listening to such a muddled
mess of an album… (Cerebral Metalhead)
Being into their stuff since the early demo days, I can assure
you that this is the most complete release of the band (Metal Invader).
VS
Personally, I would suggest that you avoid this and invest
in the band’s previous albums instead…(rocking.gr)
“Eternal Sorrow” can be mentioned as a new PANTHEIST
hymn…(Doom-metal.com)
VS
…only Eternal Sorrow is a bit flat in my
opinion…(Quintessence)
The most impressive track for me is "Dum Spiro Despero.
Heavy guitar riffs are backed by substantial use of an organ at the
start…(GASPetc.com)
VS
Many first-class
approaches are interrupted by annoying accessory parts like in Dum Spiro
Despero, which starts with a groovy riff before a redundant terribly
wobbling and artificial sounding Hammond organ enters (nocturnalhall.com)
"Unknown Land"... has an
astonishing vocalic intro…(Metal-temple.com)
VS
…Take
"Unknown Land"…Goofy, Dracula-esque clean vocals … (Metalreview.com)
Conclusion: trust your ears and your hearts. Music can not be forced into being something, it simply is.
