All this noise is made by one dude, no way! Matthew Vlahovich aka Golden Girls, taps into a confusing mix of Robert Smith-like vocals, a range of bouncy electro beats and delicious synth-coated power pop. It’s confusing because this type of music normally attracts tweenage girls, but Vlahovich’s lyrical content is a little bit too explicit for adolescent ears, tailored more towards horny teenagers on E. XOXO is a total party, albeit a very short one. Only one song breaches the three minute mark, final track ‘The Big League’, which is well known in Canada for featuring on the hit television show Tout Le Monde En Parle. The aptly titled ‘Hot Sex’ has also enjoyed time on television, it features in the porn film Artistic Fucking by Brooklyn indie porn company Burning Angel. All five songs have a totally unpretentious pop vibe, you just have to avoid taking them too seriously. Even if you think you’ve heard this sound before it’s worth turning a blind eye. Yes, ‘Asian Kids’ does sound a lot like Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head and yes, Vlahovich does sound a lot like Robert Smith. But imagine Smith laughing at himself instead of frowning in misery, or imagine the grim reaper standing behind his keyboard jumping up and down and throwing glitter into the crowd. XOXO isn’t meant to be over-analysed, it’s about having fun any which way possible, even if that fun requires being naked in the bedroom.

XoXo is the forthcoming EP release from Toronto-based indie dance rock group GoldenGirls.

The band create booty-shaking synth-heavy new wave with a decidedly '80s flare (in fact "The Big League" is reminiscent of New Order's "Regret" while "Hot Sex" has a Cure aura). Added to the mix is a punk rock bravado that gives the entire thing a turbo-charged kick in the ass.

The tracks are highly sexually charged, a la CSS. However, the songs are so catchy that you tend to forget what they are about. When you finally realize you can't help but feel you're grooving along constitutes something naughty.

Don't worry about dirty dancing with these GoldenGirls, there's no Bea Arthur among this crowd.

GoldenGirls have a few Toronto shows coming up:
    Ourspace, July 9th
    Tranzac, July 24th
    The Boat, July 31st
Best tracks: "Hot Sex", "The Big League"

Track listing for XoXo:
    Do The Criminal
    Hot Sex
    Dance With Me
    Asian Kids
    The Big League
7.5/10

With the first single off an EP called XoXo (set for April release), "Do The Criminal", the Canadian young man who calls himself GoldenGirls creates the sort of hyped up, minimal, pogo-inspiring synthpop that brings out the listener's love of casio hums and the glee of teenage innocence.  Combine that with nearly-stock effects and so-repetitious-you-can't-not-find-them-catchy drums, and you get a formula that's so immensely easy to like and terrifyingly hard to be snarky about, your friends here at THE CULTURE OF ME are 100% expecting certain nothing-good-to-say naysayers' imminent head explosions.  And to push the lever all the way to overload, here are two similarly infectious, slightly more nuanced remixes: a 4/4 bang version from Mr Vega and what could qualify as the most friendly punk rock treatment ever from Designer Drugs.

I'm being admitted to the hospital this morning. It looks like they might have to remove my appendix. Wish me luck!
