Studio: MT Entertainment

MPAA Rating: Not Rated
Running Time: 96 Mins

“Live Evil” is a film that I’ve been kind of looking forward for two reasons. First, I saw the trailer to this film and thought it looks like some b-movie fun and it had Tim Thomerson of Trancers fame playing a badass. Going into this my thinking was, it has to be one of those mindless film that I would enjoy. Right?

The film is about a cowboy priest with a samurai sword, who is on a quest for revenge against a vampire clique. The clique also has some problems, as they a caught up in a underground civil war as groups of vampires are fighting over blood, as there’s a shortage in the blood supply due to most of the blood being contaminated with drugs, cigarettes and anything that changes the blood. Soon everything leads to a bloody climax, in which no one might walk out of. The film also features cameos from Ken Foree (Dawn of the Dead, Rob Zombie’s Halloween) Tiffany Shepis (the upcoming “Night of the Demons” remake, Nympha) and Ellisa Dowling.

MPAA Rating: R
Running Time: 79 Mins

Found footage films are usually your typical love it or hate films. When watching one of the films, I go into that type of film with a set of questions:

First, I’m I feeling scared, when watching the film in a dark theater?
Second, are the characters believable enough for this type of film to work?
Third, are there any subplots that make the characters interesting enough to keep the action moving, when nothing is happening?
Fourth, I am checking my watch, while watching the film, because I’m bored?
Finally, did the ending provide an emotional response that made me think about it afterwards?

Here’s a little backstory to the release of this film. “Paranormal Activity” is a film that was purchased by Dreamworks at the 2008 Slamdance Film Festival. The film, then sat on a shelf for over a year and a half, as the company didn’t know what to do with it. When they came to a decision, Dreamworks along with Paramount originally planned remaking the film as a star vehicle, until they conducted a test screening of the film and the people there liked so much that they did the unthinkable and changed their minds and keep it mostly intact with the original ending changed.

The film is about a happy couple that moves into a quite suburban house, where it has a history. The two decide to document everything that goes on, so they can find out, if there is any truth to the rumors of the house that they occupy. They discovers that something mysterious is haunting them in the middle of the night, which leads to deadly consequences.

Sorority Row
Year: 2009
Director: Stewart Hendler
Studio: Summit Entertainment
Stars: Briana Evigan, Leah Pipes, Carrie Fisher
MPAA Rating: R
Running Time: 101 Mins

Another week, another remake as this week is “Sorority Row”. This film is based on the 1983 film, “The House on Sorority Row”. This film is one of those films, where it could have easily turned into a very bad experience.

The film is about six girls who are having the time of their live, as they throw a party at their sorority house known as “Theta Pi”. They decide to play a prank on one of the sorority girl’s brothers, by having Megan fake her own death. After that happened, they all drive to an isolated road, where they plan to dump the body. But the prank turns deadly, when the brother thinking that Megan is really dead, actually kills her with a tire-iron. Soon, the sisters decide to dump her body in an abandoned well and move on with their lives.

Eight months later, the remaining five sisters are having one last week of fun together, before moving on after graduating. Everything is fine, until they receive a mysterious picture on their cell phones containing a picture of Megan’s dead body. Soon the killer starts stalking and killing the girls. Has Megan come back from the dead or is the killer someone that wants the girls dead for some other reason.

Halloween 2
Year: 2009
Director: Rob Zombie
Studio: Dimension Films
Stars: Scout Taylor-Compton, Malcolm McDowell, Tyler Mane
MPAA Rating: R
Running Time: 104 Mins

I’m one of a very few horror fans that have been looking forward to the day that “Halloween 2” came out, as I enjoyed Rob Zombie’s first “Halloween” film. Going into this film, I was hoping that yet again that some major horror critics were wrong about this film and Rob Zombie’s vision as a whole.

The film takes place after the first film, where Laurie Strode is still struggling to come to grips with Michael Myers’ death. She’s transported to a hospital thinking that the nightmare of the first film is over. However Michael reappears very much alive in the hospital trying to finish her off for good but is unsuccessful.

A year later, Laurie is still haunted by those events, as she tries to come to terms with her past and forget about it. But soon two things will happen that might drive her insane. Dr Loomis has written a tell-all book that exposes everything including her dark secret and the events that caused the massacre and Michael is very much alive and in hiding. He plans his revenge, as he returns to Haddonfield for deadly reunion with Laurie, his sister.
