COOK OUT, POW WOW DANCERS, DRUMMING and the Documentary Film "Teachings of the Tree People"
Nationally acclaimed artist and Skokomish tribal leader Gerald Bruce Miller (subiyay) interpreted the sacred teachings of the natural world for anyone who wanted to learn.
A passionate student of traditional culture, Bruce became the bearer of the language, oral history, art, and spirituality of the tuwaduq (Twana) and Southern Coast Salish peoples. This gentle and generous film documents his race against time and ailing health to pass the knowledge of his ancestors on to those who would listen.

Quetzalli will show the movie Machuca on June 12 at 8pm. The movie which won a number of international film awards, shows how difficult and impacting it is to bring about social change at the community level. The film exentuates the clash at a very personal level between socialist policies to provide rights to the (native) people who have been pushed out of every aspect of government, education and economic process and the capitalist elite that have controlled the same with the help of those in power. Very moving!!!
Synopsis: Chile, 1973, Gonzalo Infante and Pedro Machuca are two eleven year-old boys that live in Santiago, the first in a well-to-do neighborhood and the second in a poor illegally installed ghetto that are stone-throw apart, two worlds separated by a great wall invisible to some, who in their wish to make a dream come true of a time full of revolutionary hopes, they want to tear down. One of those dreamers, the director of a private religious school, father McEnroe, wit the support of the parents, integrates the elitist school with poor children from the ghetto with the firm decision to make them respect each other. That's how Pedro Machuca is in the same classroom as Gonzalo Infante and a friendship is born full of discoveries and surprises. But the difficulties of this integration attempt are amplified by those that come from an atmosphere of social clashes that Chilean society lives in…
Listen to music on Quetzalli's myspace page featuring Nueva Canción Chilena (New Chilean Song), including songs by Victor Jara who was tortured and executed by Pinochet's government, Violeta Parra, Inti Illimani and others up to the day of the show...:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
