Coburn Blocks Veterans’ Health Bill  (link)

Native American Times reports that Oklahoma Senator Tom Coburn blocked a bill to help Veterans.  This bill had a number of Native Veteran benefit provisions.  He states his concern is fiscal responsibility.

Court Ruling Affirming Sovereignity May Affect Oklahoma Tribes (link)

A Tulsa lawyer said a recent decision by the federal appeals court in Denver has broad implications for any company that conducts business with American Indian tribes. The court ruled last week that the Seneca-Cayuga tribe's cigarette business cannot be sued in federal court because the business is shielded by tribal sovereign immunity. Federal Bar Association Names Mike McBride General Counsel (link)

The Federal Bar Association has selected D. Michael McBride III as General Counsel on the FBA's National Board of Directors. McBride is a partner with the Tulsa office of Crowe & Dunlevy, P.C., and chairs the firm's Indian Law & Gaming Practice Group.  The Federal Bar Association is a national organization of more than 16,000 lawyer and judge members advancing the issues of federal lawyers and the judiciary.

Casino To Reopen Under Hard Rock Name (link)

The Cherokee Casino Resort will be rebranded as Hard Rock Casino Tulsa next spring.  The casino will add hundreds of jobs through next year and could become a regional tourist destination.  Hard Rock, best known for housing rock memorabilia, will bring its marketing clout to the resort, which is undergoing a $150 million expansion.  This news item is also posted under the Cherokee Nation tribal page on Oklahoma Is Native.

Election 2008- Tribal Gifts Near $900K (Link)

Oklahoma's American Indian tribes donated almost $900,000 to local, state and national candidates up for election in 2008, ranging from Barack Obama to Oklahoma County Sheriff John Whetsel, records show.  In the last two years, they donated another $1.16 million to state and national political committees and political parties.  This news item is also posted under the Cherokee Nation, Chickasaw Nation, Choctaw Nation tribal page on Oklahoma Is Native.

Oklahoma's Bradford Serving As Role Model

Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford realizes he has become a role model for many.  Actually, he's most revered in several nations – the Choctaw, the Caddo, the Cherokee and many other Native American tribes in Oklahoma and around the country.  The great, great grandson of Susie Walkingstick, a full-blooded Cherokee on his father's side, Bradford, one of two Native Americans on the OU roster (long snapper Derek Shaw is the other), might give Oklahoma its fifth Heisman Trophy. He gives the Sooners a shot at another national championship. And he also gives Native Americans much more than Saturday afternoon glory: He represents hope and possibilities for tribal communities in dire need of both.

Fight Over a Beloved (and Lucrative) Book (link)

For most university presses, a book that sells a million copies is a rarity. Long-Haired Boy Denied Entry Into Kindergarten (link)

A Houston-area school board will decide if a boy's long hair should keep him from attending school after a superintendent denied the request, KPRC Local 2 reported Tuesday.  The Needville Independent School District said 5-year-old Adriel Arocha's long locks violate school rules. Adriel's parents said long hair is a sacred tradition in their Native American culture.

State American Indian Center Close To Being A Reality (link)

"The idea came to me in Novem-ber 1962. That's how long I've been working on it," said Enoch Kelly Haney, a former state senator and now chief of the Seminole Nation. 5-day College Workshop Prepares American Indian Students (link)

77 students from around the country who descended on Lawrence University's Appleton campus last week for College Horizons, a five-day pre-college workshop for American Indian students. It's the first time a Wisconsin school has hosted the national program.

Health Care Authority Plans Second Meeting With Tribal, Health Care Leaders (link)


Health care for Oklahoma's American Indian population will be the focus of the Oklahoma Health Care Authority's second annual SoonerCare Tribal Consultation Meeting.  The meeting will focus on OHCA policy, program development and issues of access affecting SoonerCare (Oklahoma Medicaid) and Indian health care in Oklahoma.

Native gangs that have infected Indian country and frightened tribal members who are trying to rid their reservations of the disillusioned youth that often know little about their culture. Many adults are preoccupied with blame and eliminating the gangs rather than trying to take back their youth.
