Category: Music
Hello friends!
It has been a busy and exciting year for Ohbijou, so maybe we’ll just take a moment to summarize some highlights:
1. We released Beacons! It took 3 years, and was recorded all over the country from beds at Jamie’s grandmother’s cottage in Muskoka region, to the awe inspiring Banff Centre for the Arts, to our beloved practice space and former home of Casey and Jenny fondly known as “Bellwoods”, to home sessions with the album’s fearless and dedicated engineer/producer Chris Stringer. A big thank you to everyone who helped us make the album, we couldn’t have done it without you.
2. We got signed! Thanks to Bella Union in Europe and Last Gang Records in North America for taking the leap with us, we are eternally grateful for all your help and support.
3. We went to Texas! This year, we got to fulfill a big dream of ours by playing at SXSW, and what made it even better was that a ton of our band friends were there too! Props to the Wooden Sky, The D’Urbervilles, Gentleman Reg, and The Rural Alberta Advantage! We look forward to returning to Austin in 2010!
4. We went to Europe! Twice! Wow was it ever amazing, so scenic and interesting and we met so many amazing new friends along the way. Big thanks to our Tour Manager Matt Shrimpton and Scott Milner, for your humour and for getting us to all our destinations safely!
5. We did a Cross-Canada tour! It was wonderful to return to so many cities across our nation, each time we get more familiar with the venues, promoters and fans that make each tour stop unique and we are so thankful for the warm reception from our audiences. There really is no place like home! Also, we must do a shout out to our dear friends/touring partners the Acorn who always make touring fun with their dodgeball games, sanddune climbing and dice gambling.
6. Friends in Bellwoods II! The double-disk sensation curated by Casey and James has raised approximately $20,000 for the Daily Bread Food bank in Toronto, visit friendsinbellwoods.com for more information.
7. Exploding Motor Car made us a kick ass video! An ambitious stop-motion animation masterpiece – click here to be amazed if you haven’t seen it yet. Thanks so much to everyone at Exploding Motor Car, and to Videofact for making it possible.
8. CBC is the best! We would like to take a moment to thank CBC for all their support, and for playing our music. We were privileged to make appearances on Definitely Not The Opera, GO, Q, Sounds of the Season this year, and we had a fantastic time. Thank you CBC, we love you!
Finally, we’d like to extend a humongous thank you to our friends, families, fans, and loved ones for all your support in 2009. So from our hearts to yours, below is a link to a holiday surprise we recorded just for you. We must also thank George Michael for writing such a gem of a song!
Ohbijou – Last Christmas
Happy Holidays to you and your loved ones!

I can still feel the van moving. A ubiquitous buzzing traveling through my veins; a cerebral drone. I wonder if there's a clinical term for this condition? I'm sitting in my bedroom at home but can still feel the van moving. Maybe it's something comparable to having a phantom limb; something is missing and yet I can still feel it in motion. Being on tour for 3 months and now sitting still without an itinerary to discipline each day, each week, is disorienting and unfamiliar. My body still feels crammed, one of six sardines squished into a tin can.

SEPTEMBER (EUROPE)

Its amazing being in a band. The opportunity to travel, to entertain is unmatched and the experiences that satiate each moment, each tour stop are so memorable and yet also so peculiar. Its a difficult task to try and discern each moment from the past 3 months that has affected/altered us in some way but there are instants that stand out. The month of September was spent uncovering Europe. Our second time to London carried with it a satisfying familiarity. Spending another afternoon in Brick Lane, furiously rummaging through vintage clothing, browsing vinyl stacks and being caught in the crossfire of restaurant owners fighting for our patronage felt accustomed and recurrent. London also brought with it a much needed reunion between my sister and her best friend Christina. I've never seen Jenny smile so wide - her happiness was contagious.

We are so grateful for the opportunity to play through out Europe and owe much gratitude to our booking agents James Alderman at Free Trade, Bob Van Heur at Belmont Booking, everyone at Bella Union and especially our tour captain Matt "Prawn" Shrimpton for herding us around safely and for unleashing (among other things) the most potent humour and witt through out our tour. Other European highlights included; the Dirty Projectors at the End of the Road Festival in North Dorset UK, wandering the streets of Rotterdam NL, playing at Club Vera in Groningen NL, talking Battlestar Galactica with J. Tilman in Paris, jumping on a trampoline at Bernie's in Manchester, drinking whiskey into the wee hours with the boys form Magnolia Electric Co in Porthcawl UK and a surprise visitor and a much needed day off to explore Berlin. We feel lucky to have seen snippets of Europe if not only through the window of a van and hope to play again there soon.

OCTOBER (EASTERN CANADA)

"My life is a perfect graveyard of buried hopes." Anne Shirley.
The most predictable circumstance of our trip out east was watching Anne of Green Gables on the way to Prince Edward Island. Soaked in youthful nostalgia, Anissa belted (as per usual) strident chirps of laughter from the back seat of our van. The soil slowly subsumed a redness to match the season outside as we crossed Confederation Bridge onto the island. We buried our feet in the red soil, jumped off small cliffs and absorbed the crisp air blowing from the Atlantic ocean. It was our first time visiting this province and like always it was even better to share it with the boys from The Acorn. Again, we feel so enriched by our friendships with Howie, Rolf, Pat, Jeff and Jeffrey. They are so humbling, so inspiring....Jeff previewed some tracks from their upcoming release and I must say prepare to be blown away.

Other Eastern Canada highlights included; playing at St. Matthew's Church for Halifax Pop, devastating the Acorn in a game of dodgeball, Heather winning $45 in a game of dice in Fredericton, coffee at the Bridge St. cafe in Sackville and hearing Snailhouse perform Birds and Bees. Thank you to everyone who came to see our shows out east, next time we hope to make it all the way to Newfoundland!

NOVEMBER (WESTERN CANADA)

In Thunder Bay they were bumping and grinding (?!). Well not everyone, just two people. What an amazing display of moves! I saw a lot of "booty" shaking. Wowee. I'm sure it was the orchestral under pinnings of our music that unleashed their wild sides but I digress. Thunder Bay has always been a memorable experience for us. From Shelia devulging the trials and tribulations of her beloved Apollo to Tina shuffling around to serve us breaded chicken and sweet potatoes before the show to a girl named Jayal (I hope I spelt that write) sewing us an Ohbijou banner and giving us a copy of her wolf stories; we always leave that city feeling full of warmth and feeling apart of the family.

Our tour out west was the last leg of this 2 month jaunt around Canada. We were anticipating the beautiful drive from Sudbury through to Sault Ste. Marie. We were looking forward to the quiet lull and infinite skies of the prairies. We were held captive by the mountains and charmed by the small towns like Hedley BC that lined our path to Vancouver. Canada is so big and to feel every inch of it is truly an extraordinary experience. I won't reiterate all that has been reflected upon in our most recent blogs of this tour but I will definitely send thanks to everyone who came out to the shows. Thank you for supporting our music and thank you for the opportunities to play for you. We feel really lucky and hope to see you again soon! Thank you especially to our booking agent Steven Himmelfarb and Remi for all your help through out.

The wheels have stopped so now what?

There is a much to absorb and digest. It's time to put pen to paper and write, write, write!

Thank you again.
Keep well.
Casey

I feel like I’m at home right now. Home.. at the moment is our friend Paul’s kitchen in Kingston. I don’t know what he’s cooking right now…but, holy crap, it smells really good.
Paul has the cooking front under control…so we’ve been spending the morning watching Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber videos on youtube. If I were 12, I would totally be “falling” for this little guy..
Yes, The band has higher spirits today.
On Thursday we ventured to Montreal to play with Silver Starling at Club Lambi.  Despite the infinite number of stairs we had to carry our gear up, we were really looking forward to playing this show. It was also Casey’s birthday so we ate delicious cheesecake backstage before our set.
Silver Starling’s set was beautiful. Man oh man, these guys  are wonderful; warm, extremely talented people.  I’m happy we have the chance to play these three shows with them.
I think our set went well. It was a lot of fun to play and the crowd was incredibly attentive and warm.
Unfortunately, before putting this wonderful night to bed, we realized our  van had been broken into. My violin was stolen, along with Jamie’s rack tom, and a bag full of Heather’s clothes. Man, what a way to end the night.
My heart still aches just a bit. I was really attached to my violin, however, I know I can possibly find a new one. My beautiful case was a gift and it was the personal treasures that I had in there that can’t be replaced. (I hope that when the thief came across my notebook and personal letters….their guilty conscious made their heart ache just a bit).
Thieving aside…we felt pretty exhausted and deflated before leaving for Kingston; dealing with van window replacements and all. It was nice to leave that experience behind us and play the Grad Club. The show was packed and the crowd’s enthusiasm was really uplifting.
Tonight. The Babylon in Ottawa. Oh boy, this will be fun!
I’m excited to see our acorns again.
You know what?  I think Anissa already messaged Rolf to get Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber  tunes ready for us to dance to tonight.
You guys should come. Ya?
Anyways, I’m putting my first blogging experience to an end.
Thanks for reading.

The drive from Sudbury to Sault Ste Marie is quite beautiful.  I’m passing the time listening to podcasts, sewing pants and glancing out the window.  New pants!  I bought them on our day off that we spent in Toronto between shows.  A replacement for one of my pairs that wandered off when we were in Montreal.  (While writing that last sentence, I imagined a pair of pants standing up on their own and walking around.. think about it)
Last night we played our first ever show in Sudbury.  Nathan Lawr joined us for the evening.  It was a great show, thanks to Paul and all the lovely people who came out and shared conversations and pizza with us.
This past Saturday we also played at club Babylon in Ottawa.  It was our final of 3 shows with Silver Starling…. what a great band.  You should really check them out:  www.silverstarling.com.
Post-show we had a wild games night of Boggle and Dice, hosted by our dear friend Rolf of the Acorn.  We also spent the night at Rolf’s, and I had the good fortune of waking up with a cat on me.
Tonight:  Lop Lops Gallery in Sault Ste Marie, and a home cooked meal at our publicist’s family’s house.  Can’t wait!
Heather
PS  -  If you live in Toronto, here is a heads-up on 2 very special back-to-back nights coming up in the near future… some of us from Ohbijou will be involved in the events, and we are very excited!   Perhaps we will see you there!!

Greetings from Winnipeg!
Wow, we’ve done a lot of driving in the past few days!  Makes you realize exactly how large Ontario is, and also how lovely.  I drove a good stretch yesterday between Sault Ste Marie and Thunder Bay and loved taking in the beautiful view of Lake Superior, framed by forest and rock cliffs while the sun was setting.
Sault Ste Marie was very welcoming, we were invited to dinner at the home of Nancy and Dennis Cavanagh, our publicist Beth’s parents.  They made us feel at home with a delicious meal, and wild blueberry pie for dessert!  Thanks very much for your hospitality.  Then we headed over to Loplops Lounge for the show, which was fun, thanks to everyone who came out and to Steve for having us play there again.
Then it was off to Thunder Bay bright and early in the morning, coffees in hand. It is always so great to come back to The Apollo, the owner Sheila and her mother Tina always welcome us with open arms and the venue has great food, amazing sound and friendly staff. Every band going through Thunder Bay should play there! Oh, and I haven’t even mentioned yet how awesome the audience is in Thunder Bay, we had so much fun playing last night and it was really great meeting lots of new friends after the show. A girl named Jayal even made us a really cool banner that says ohbijou! That is so sweet! We always have a little too much fun partying in Thunder Bay and last night was no exception, there was dancing and pizza-eating until the wee hours of the morning…
At the moment we are prepping for our show in Winnipeg, Jenny is setting up the merch and thinking about puppies, Ryan is poking around with the tour binder and pretending he is a vampire, Casey is staring at her blackberry and beatboxing, Heather is typing something about belly buttons and cotton, and Jamie is hiding somewhere still afraid of the ghost that lurked in his room at the Apollo hostel last night.
And while I listen to Slow Down Molasses soundcheck, I am thinking about all the awesome IPhone apps I’m going to build in the near future, to occupy my time while I’m cooped up in the van as we travel across the country…
So be well, and if you are in one of the following cities, please come see us at one of these upcoming shows:
13 Nov 2009 The Lo Pub w/ Slow Down Molasses Winnipeg, Manitoba
14 Nov 2009 Amigo’s w/ Slow Down Molasses Saskatoon, SK
16 Nov 2009 The Exchange w/ Slow Down Molasses Regina, SK
18 Nov 2009 Marquee Room Calgary, Alberta
19 Nov 2009 Pawn Shop Edmonton, Alberta
20 Nov 2009 Habitat Kelowna, British Columbia
21 Nov 2009 The Biltmore Cabaret Vancouver, BC
23 Nov 2009 Communitea Cafe Canmore, Alberta
Yours truly,
Anissa

November 16th, 2009

As our tour brings us west and north, and the days bring us closer to snowy weather, we're not feeling the least bit of chill.  Our time in Winnipeg was wonderful.  The Lo Pub made us awesome food and put us up for the night.  The folks who came to the show were so appreciative and welcoming.  We were excited to again have Ricardo Lopez-Aguilar (of the band Oldfolks Home) mixing our set, and the whooping and hollering coming from the audience let us know we were on the right track.  This was the first show of our 3-show tour with Slow Down Molasses, and at the end of the night Ryan and Jeanette had the great idea of going on a "pizza adventure".  And indeed it was.  The pizza part was executed perfectly to the satisfaction of all, but the adventure element proved to be a little too spicy.  For the second time in two weeks, something precious was stolen from our Jenny.  Though not as lovely or as musical as her violin, the piece of pizza (taken by a couple of dorky hooligans who faught like lame prairie dogs) was sorely missed... if only for a night.

The last two days we've had a little more good fortune.  We've been staying safe from harm in the warm nest belonging to our friends Micajah and Lief; wonderful musicians and kind-hearted gentleman both.  Instead of riding in the van, or trying to find a sense of home in a strange hotel room, we have found ourselves in a real live living room, a little kitchen with a big view of a big back yard, and in cozy beds at night!  If that weren't enough to warm our hearts, the excellent lads and ladies of Slow Down Molasses were kind enough to take us out to dinner as well!  We had an assortment of dishes from the world largest continent, some of which we had never heard of (or tasted of, rather) before!  What better way to spend a day off than getting to know new friends over mango-flavoured food, then heading to our adopted home to watch non-stop episodes of 30 Rock!  It probably would have been the best day ever, but it was Sunday, and the store offering "Metaphysical Books and Curiosities" was closed.  Next time, Saskatchewiccans!

And just so you don't think we're taking it too easy in Saskatoon, we did play a show here on Saturday night.  Shows are hard work of course.  You have to carry your instruments, set up your instruments, play your instruments, and in the case of a show at Amigo's, you have to put up with eating the best food the 306 has to offer!  Hard work!  Thank you Amigos for your beans and your uncanny ability to read the burrito's thoughts and know what it truly wants to be.  And thank you to the enthusiastic and encouraging concert goers who pressed up to the stage and made us feel alright through and through!  Yay Saskatoon!

Tonight is Regina, and we're very excited to see the provincial capital!  We've never played there and we're all looking foward to it!  We hope to see you there!

One final note, when we played at Amigo's a nice man named Josh Baker handed us a present... a USB key with a really nice remix of Wildfires and Cannon March.  Listen to Wildfires here.
And check out Josh's work here:: http://inforcestudios.com

Love, Ryan

it's coming....

FRIENDS IN BELLWOODS II - AUGUST 25th courtesy of OUT OF THIS SPARK RECORDS:

Here are the details!

Out of this Spark is proud to announce the release of Friends in Belwoods II, a 40-song, double-album set of rare, new and unreleased selections from some of Canada's most innovative independent musicians, available August 25, 2009.

In 2006, Ohbijou’s Casey Mecija and her bandmate, James Bunton, knew it was time to document and showcase some of the music being created in her home on Bellwoods Avenue in Toronto. In an attempt to render a “digital diary of the house”, the pair curated the first Friends in Bellwoods compilation later that year. Their keen sense of changes taking place in the neighborhood, and their relation to the gentrifying forces at work, led them to consider the geographic connection between the house and a heavily trafficked food bank. As a result, all proceeds from the original and the second compilation go to The Daily Bread Food Bank. The first edition of the compilation has raised over $11,000 since its release two years ago.

Friends in Bellwoods II operates as an archival document that beautifully arrests and captures the sound of a moment in the city’s history. It features rare and unreleased tracks from acclaimed artists such as Final Fantasy, Forest City Lovers, The D’Urbervilles, Great Lake Swimmers, The Acorn, Sandro Perri, Basia Bulat, Timber Timber, Katie Stelmanis and Ohbijou. Many of the songs were recorded in the house; listen carefully and you might hear the detailing of the house’s life recorded—a window creaking, a kettle boiling, the resident dog shuffling, the constant rotation of friends and musicians that continue to animate a small bungalow on Bellwoods Avenue.
