For many years I've found myself in situations where we had show/tour offers and we couldn't play the show because one of our members couldn't do it.

Well, Also for many years I've filled in for different bands when they were in the same situation.

I've found it's a great way to meet new people and have lot's of fun when we don't any Ray Gradys shows booked.

So, here's the deal.

All I need is 1-2 weeks notification and for you to get me cd copies or mp3's of the set you wanna do.

I can learn all the songs note for note and/or hi hat/kick drum/snare/ride perfectly.

Now if possible, we could practice once before the show or tour you need me to fill in on, if not, I don't think it'd be much of a problem because it will be the same as you're playing along with what was recorded and sent to me.

What I ask in return is whatever my travel costs are. ( bus, plane, van. )
Depends on the distance I must travel.
( The closer to Philadelphia, the cheaper it will be. )
Food and drinks are a plus !

I can't promise I'll be available to fill in for your band, but having me as an option is better than turning down a really good show and/or tour.
So even if you don't need me now, keep this blog in the back of your head.

The best place to reach me is
gradycorerecords@gmail.com
or at www.myspace.com/gradycorerecords

Thanks for reading and never stop playing !

first i have a question  the songs burn a witch for jesus and church state and corporation  to you what do they mean. pplease tell me thanxxx

----------------- Reply Message -----------------

Well, there's a lyrics section on the flashplayer for all myspace music artists.
I know listening to punk bands lyrics can be difficult to figure out each word.
The song burnawitch for jesus is about how the problems with a bunch of superstitious christians from days of old still linger around in today's world. The same "no thought" "do as your told" way of thinking is still around.
I even give a little shout out to columbus for being the hitler of his time. He enslaved and murdered more people than hitler even got close to.

The song, Church, State, and the corporations is about exactly what the title says.
Now at the beginning it's a little sarcastic, but it's kinda hinting that what if Satan was the good guy and god was the bad guy and the people that wrote it were in favor of the bad guy but had to make the bad guy sound good, because you can't take over a world without making people think you're the good guy no matter how many bad things you've done to the population of the planet.
Did I lose you there... I almost lost myself.
But speaking of the bible ,well I'm sort a scholar on that book, and I can disprove it starting with genesis. (No not the Phil Collins group)
So anyways, I used my imagination for the first part of the song, giving a "what if scenerio" about how maybe God and Jesus got really high on crack and decided to create all this mess. I mean it makes perfect sense to me !
haha
Now for the last verse I'm stating that the government has a cure to a lot of the diseases that plague us, but they won't release the cure because there's a lot of big money riding on making sure people get those illnesses.
Also giving an example of the frustration that someone might feel about those kind of crimes against humanity.
GW is a terrorist, and it's about time for people to realize that. He just uses different means to get what he wants.
Then at the very end I simply state that it will probably never change and people will continue to do what they've been doing for the past thousands of years. and that is not really much of anything. We've sent a few satellites into outer space, but as a human race we really haven't done that much. Sitcoms? there's a great human invention.
Till people start looking a little deeper into life itself this world is doomed. Not because of people like me... but because of people that won't stop and question what's already set.
Thanks for your question,
-EArl-y GAtes

SOUNDSTREET Zine Interview (Nov. 2005)

1) How did you get started?

EArl- "Jon and I started this band in '96 hoping to make punk rock music that was different and good." " We kicked the drummer out of our old band and started the Ray Gradys" "Finding a drummer was a bitch back then." "We probably tryed out 15 drummers before we found one that could keep up with us."

Jon- "Earl and I wrote some songs in 96 and got a drummer formed the ray gradys and played all over the dirty south."

Mike Yak- "I joined in February of 2004."

2) What was the longest tour you've been on/how long was it?

EArl- " We did a month and a half tour back in the year 2000. We played all the way up and down the east coast. It was the most fun i've ever had. Sleeping in Pep boys parking lots, van breaking down 3 times, and eating nothing but canned food, it was awesome."

Jon- "An EAst Coast tour in 2000 for 8 weeks"

Mike Yak- "n/a"

3) How long have you all been playing your instruments?

EArl- "I started playing guitar 18 years ago. I was just a kid. I started playing drums in '95 and I played drums on out last two cds because we didn't have a drummer at the time."

Jon- "I've been playing bass for 9 yrs"

Mike Yak- "I've been drumming since I was around 16 or so."

4) Is there a possibility of The Ray Gradys getting signed any time in the near future?

EArl- "I certainly hope so, we only want a company that can do more for us than we can do for ourselves. Time and money have not been on our side, and it takes both for promotion and touring."

Jon- "We have talked to various labels and been on numerous comps."

Mike Yak- "Damn right!"

5) What were some of the main influences behind The Ray Gradys?

EArl- "Living on a shitty planet."

Jon-"A lot of early west coast punk, Bad Religion, Ramones, etc..."

Mike Yak- "Government, Angst, Religion, Anger, beer!"

6) What are some personal influences, that were important to the individual members?

EArl- "Living in a shitty world!"

Jon- "Rancid was one of my main influences and Op Ivy as well as Nofx."

Mike Yak- "My musical influences are all in the old school punk stuff. I also like Motown, funk, old school hip-hop and things like that. Simplicity in drumming can be just as impressive as a flashy solo."

7) What influences the lyrics?

EArl- "Howard Zinn and GG Allin.""Oh yeah, and living on a shitty planet"

Jon- "social politics, world problems and situations that affect all of us."

Mike Yak- "Earl being an angry asshole."

8) Why would you choose music of a more obnoxious style, rather than something less in-your-face?

EArl- "Well, we're trying to get Mike Yak to learn some "less in your face" flashy drum solos..."" Isn't less in your face a band from Florida?"

Jon- "Because a more bland style is boring."

Mike Yak- "It's who we are. We can all be pretty obnoxious and "in-your'face". Plus, with this kind of music, it sort of has to be like that. The music is made to be obnoxious and get a message across. And fuck you for calling us obnoxious!"

EArl- "I sleep in the back of the van when we're on the road so I don't have to hear Mike Yak talk!"

9) What was the most fun you've had at a show/on tour?

EArl- " The most fun I've had @ a recent show was when we drove out to Indiana and played Evansville. Jon and I were kicking my cap around on stage while we were playing and i kicked it on Mike Yak's head. Plus the kids out there are awesome."

Jon- "Probably playin in Chesterville Maryland, Indiana, or playin any show with Dead Center on tour."

Mike Yak- "We always have the most fun down in Myrtle Beach. They know how to treat us."

10) what were some acts you've toured with?

EArl- "Dead Center from Myrtle Beach, SC. They're broken up now. We've been on a few road trips with the Cut Offs from Schwenksville, PA. Most of the time we're off on our own."

Jon- "Dead Center and soon to be the Cut Offs
also played with such acts as the Adicts, Global Threat, and the Slackers."

Mike Yak- "n/a "

EArl- " Go online and check out our music and showdates "myspace.com/theraygradys" DO IT !"

Maia's NC Zine Interview (Jan. 2006)

1. Have you guys adjusted to Philadelphia well?

EArl-y GAtes: "I think so, but they haven't adjusted to us !
People up here pronounce their A's as O's and their O's as A's. They're pretty retarded about the Eagles, so I always bet against them when they get to a championship game.Hey It's easy money."

Jon: "we have finally gotten lotsa kids to come out to our all ages shows after 3 years of playingq, its still cold as balls here."

Mike Yak: "I've been in Philly for a while. So, I'm adjusting to the way it is now. New venues open and close all the time. But the old ghetto venues were the best.

2. How did you guys spend your Christmas?

EArl-y: "I spent it eating food and getting presents, Christmas is a stupid holiday, but I like food and presents."

Jon: "girlfriend and preparing to go out on tour to rule the west coast."

Yak: "I was with my family. We were loud and played shot-glass checkers."

3. How did you spend New Years?

EArl-y: "Being tired as hell from flying back from our mini tour of the west.I did watch a little of Dick Clark doing his retard impression."

Jon: "drinking."

Yak: "I got in from Vegas with no sleep and went out drinking. Then, on New Year's Day, we drank at the Mummer's Parade and then marched up 2 Street with the parade later that night. It's basically a Philly Mardi Gras."

4. How has getting older affected The Ray Gradys?

EArl-y: "I don't age anymore, I found the fountain of youth in South America, but as the years pass I write better songs. I will still look this way when the other guys (Jon & Yak) are 60 and decrepit."

Jon: "not much physically, we are baby faces , except we get better musically with age ."

Yak: "Hasn't slowed me down one bit. Makes me wiser and a better musician."

5. Any fond memories of playing shows at Duh? (haha, i had to ask)

EArl-y: "I remember putting a 40oz of Bud in the dumpster before we played and then crawling around in the dumpster looking for it after we played. Also, when I played drums for PSF I was puking over the rail and the bass player was humping me at the same time."

Jon : "i remember playing with piss shit fuck there "we are going play a little music, we are from down there in the mountains" all the 14 year old girls cooing over early gates and the stupid welfare babies ."

Yak: "Huh?"

6. When was the last time you messed around on a
skateboard?

EArl-y: "I skated a little bit when we were in san diego and L.A. last week. I used my skateboard to roll my guitar cabinet out to the van a month ago.haha Actually I still skate once in a while, it's hard to find time."

Jon: "couple of years, still think and reminisce about it alot."

Yak: "I don't skate. But I was on Matt's (The Cut Offs) board in San Diego. Earl kept yelling at me to get off of it because I needed to play drums and couldn't break my arm."

7. Which local (Philadelphia) venue do you prefer playing at and why?

EArl-y: "Probably any that hook us up with free drinks and give us gas money. That always depends."

Jon: "um i like the balcony just because our last 2 shows there were great and the sound there is so good and clear."

Yak: "There's a few places that always welcome us nicely. It's hard to narrow it down to just one."

8. Has a Ray Gradys show ever turned into a fiasco?

EArl-y: "Many have turned into fiascos, probably the funniest one was in Frostburg, MD when we just let the crowd sing and we just played all covers the rest of the night.Oh yeah, and one time thse guys were slam dancing to one of our songs and Mike yak just jumps over the drums and starts slamming into them.

Jon: "you might want to ask which one hasnt turned into one ."

Yak: "The Christmas show we played in 2004. That was truly a fiasco. But, we try to turn every show into a fiasco. It's more fun that way."

9. What kind of tour vehicle are you traveling in these days?

EArl-y: "I'll let Jon answer this one..."

Jon: "a 96 dodge caravan, we are a trio of soccer moms, yay !"

Yak: "Jon bought a mini van. It's good stuff. It fits all of our equipment and there's even room for Earl to sleep in the back ... because that's all he does when we're on the road."

10. Do you ever listen to NPR?

EArl-y: "I did until the radio got stolen outta my car two weeks ago. I'm putting razors behind my next car stereo. If someone wants my cd player that person will pay for it in blood. Oh yeah, the reason I sleep is so I don't have to listen to Jon and Yak talk about stupid stuff."

Jon: "all the time cause they play the bbc on there."

Yak: "I was listening to it this morning on the way to work. That's how I found out that Lou Rawls died."

11. Can you think of anything Philly doesn't have, that North Carolina did?

EArl-y: "Really Fat people, Waffle House, Low cost of living, Cheap Beer, Cheap Cigarettes, Rednecks, Food Lion, Cheap Gas, Cheap anything."

Jon: "cheap beer and plenty of good mexican food."

Yak: "Waffle House."

12. And finally, if you could tell Oprah Winfrey one thing what would you tell her?

EArl-y: "I have three things I'd say to her...
#1.Make up your mind whether you wanna be skinny or fat.
#2.How many babies can you fit in-between your teeth?
#3.Will you do a show about the Ray Gradys?"

Jon: "marry me and make me rich, then we no prenup we divorce and i stay rich ."

Yak: "Don't trust whitey."
