Current mood:  breezy
We forgot about this...

Very proud that THEY got in touch with US to ask whether they could come and see what Manchester creativity is all about...

And they wrote us this:

  • The Guardian, Saturday 25 April 2009
  • Article history
  • With its acronym standing for "music, art, poetry and stuff", this Manchester festival focuses on the city's creative Northern Quarter, offering up a multi-venue event with very much an indie vibe. Musical highlights include Liam Frost, I Like Trains, Baddies and Black Velvet Band, though there is far more than just gigs, with circus acts, burlesque and photography exhibitions all coming under the festival's umbrella. Those who like their clubbing laidback can sample herbal infusions, cake and sounds at Mrs Boon's tea party next weekend, while a fashion market, gallery shows and special offers from local eateries should make the weekend a great one to just mill about at.

    Current mood:  hungry

MAPS Festival Busking is a series of random musical and performance spots throughout the Northern Quarter, over the Saturday and Sunday of MAPS weekend.

If you're interested in coming along to show off your talents, get in touch - the Festival is all about creativity, so as long as you don't upset the local council or risk any lives we'll be happy for you to come along and entertain the crowds!

The pitches are available all afternoon, and sets are recommended to be 15-20 minutes long, but you can do as many as you want.  Obviously there won't be any power and you'll be in the open air, so think your set through before coming along, but do bring anything battery powered if you like.

Last year we had the wonderful Travelling Band on the corner of Tib Street, as well as Kev Fox and The Paris Riots who are now on tour across Europe, and lots of other colourful performers, including circus jugglers!

This year we've got Mrs Boon's Tea Party on Thomas Street and Fashion markets again on Tib Street, so if you fancy yodelling to shoppers or dancing around cake-eating couples drop us a line!

Email: miz.mapsfestival@gmail.com before Wednesday 29th April to confirm your slot - you DO NOT have to be playing MAPS Festival already!

MAPS Festival 2008 - In Review

It was a long weekend. Saturday had some lovely sunshine (Bay Horse beer garden then) whilst Sunday was overcast but warm nonetheless. Monday was dead nice if I recall rightly. Enough about the weather though, what about the music? Roving and venue hopping, it's over to Percy...

    FRIDAY

Putting on three days of gigs to promote all that's good about a local music scene can be a bit of a risky thing to do; the problem being that most local scenes do not have three days worth of bands decent enough to warrant such an event. Covering event like this can also be something of a challenge. With over twelve venues and 200 acts to choose from where does one start?

God's Gift were my introduction to MAPS and I'm still trying to decide if it was a fitting one. They are best described as an ironic Christian Rock band, consisting of two blokes with acoustic guitars and a warped sense of humour. Not warped in a bad way necessarily – I laughed along with them and their throng of guffawing friends a number of times but as the set went on the same joke was given a different polish and it became tarnished.

I decanted myself to Dry Bar where three stages had been installed for the weekend. Downstairs, I put up with the toilet stench long enough to watch Sloganeer, their main message seemingly being "sorry it's a bit lame, we're normally much louder but we're doing it acoustically tonight", which was a bit unnecessarily self-deprecating as their accordion-enhanced songs were perfectly amenable. Back upstairs on stage one, Cine suffered from their sound being diluted completely by the warehouse-style space, the first band of many to fall that fate over the course of the weekend.

Over at Centro, Armrug filled half an hour with some punky-pop, followed by Light Syndicate, whose intelligent, involved music lacked the essential bite that the masters of that particular craft have (I'm looking at you, Radiohead). Kid British & The Action Manky finished my Friday night off back in Dry Bar with a thoroughly engaging mix of ska, hip hop, punk and pretty much everything else.

    SATURDAY

Saturday afternoon could be perceived as the graveyard shift but the size and enthusiasm of the audience in Ruby's Lounge contradicted that sentiment. It's a shame that Kranius didn't match up to that enthusiasm. Tight, very heavy rock it might have been but judging by the looks on half of the bands faces they'd rather have been anywhere but there. Mantric Hatters surprised by being much more enjoyable. The young threesome were, by contrast, the epitome of enthusiasm. It all needs reigning in a bit to be fair and the good ideas need tidying up, but there's certainly potential there.

Over in the Mint Lounge Lazy Fader delivered their raw hip-hop with an almost aggressive confidence, the two MCs taking turns to spit their rhymes into our faces with force. Their flow and rhythm were excellent, enhanced by some clever guitar breaks, if a little limited. A quick stop back at the Dry Bar allowed me to catch The Slow Readers Club (acceptable indie-pop), The Chase (too timid for my liking) and All The Kings Men – again, perfectly enjoyable but never really getting past that seemingly hard to break through beige indie/pop ceiling that so many bands seem to be banging their heads against.

A virtually empty Moho Live hosted The Planets, whose energy filled some of the gap left by the poor turn out and so my MAPS festival ended where it started - in Joe's – for How's My Pop, who entertained on a level that summed up the whole experience for me; enjoyable to a point with some nice ideas but nothing that really stood out and excited.

    SATURDAY pt. II

There is surely no better way to kickstart a music festival than with a rock opera from a ukulele quartet. With dancing girls, showtunes and a bistro owner from Salford who used to make budget porn films, Thingumajigs' Rock Opera was surprisingly family-centric. Even the most committed of music snobs succumbed to pantomime booing, and who can argue with morally upstanding lyrics like "The magic begins, ten minutes in / When we've told you that video piracy is tantamount to the-e-e-e-eft…"

Continuing on the novelty trail, Dr Butler's Hatstand Medicine Band bring a taste of the delta to Moho Live alongside their kazoos and washboards, and local favourite Gideon Conn teaches an increasingly animated crowd the actions to his 'Electricity' a cappella.

At the Roadhouse, The Black Velvet Band are all high-kicks and frantic strumming with choruses emulating the pant of a dog, but any unbridled abandon is countered by the incredible holler of their female vocalist, who softens the coarseness with deep rolling soul, before Little Tremors arrive to give us all a smack in the chops. Their frontwoman is a roaring, snarling, passionate superstar that women want to be and men want to… you know. Rocking in the same way that early Riot Grrrl rocked, they bash out super-charged heavyweight punk to which there is little resistance. Nobody envies Walton Hesse having to follow that, but the ensuing half-hour evolves into a hootenanny; Gram Parsons and Linda Ronstadt playing with Lynyrd Skynyrd's rhythm section. The Roadhouse is clearly getting its money's worth from the time machine.

Finishing Saturday off with a bang (or fifty) are Ten Bears, who can make a Bob Dylan cover sound like Black Sabbath, and who become more electrifying with every gig. Having carved out a niche for themselves as The Deadbeats, sitting on rocking chairs and stamping their feet, tonight they begin with several seconds of brilliantly mind-bending synth. It's loud and sweaty and well past our bedtimes.

    SUNDAY

On Sunday, TV21 hosted a unique performance from Canadian composer, Gabriel Minnikin. Today he has assembled a 17-piece orchestra; a veritable supergroup of local talent featuring members of Polytechnic, Cortina Deluxx, and Bone-box, amongst the wealth of violin maestros and trumpeters. With an unexplained darkness to his music, Minnikin almost slurs his gravelly Lou Reed lyrics, while the complexity of each arrangement transforms simple melodies into expansive Hitchcock scores. It's hard not to be a little perturbed by the sci-fi prosthetics on display...

    MONDAY

Running between The Bay Horse's all-day barbeque and For Folk's Sake's spoken word at Cup, Monday is rather more fraught than the chilled tunes would suggest. The Chimps wind things up into a veritable frenzy of bumpkin wedding reception swing-your-pardner hick-rock, but the unpretentious songs of Petty Thief are much gentler on the ear. Manchester's answer to Bob Dylan, Petty Thief's subtle humour shines. Perhaps the parents in the room would have preferred a censored version of "your job's fucking shite and your boss is a tosser", but there are few complaints.

Over at Cup, The Bees' Niece play some deliciously twee folk, and a song dedicated to a bike thief recalls the carefree madness of Soko, but Ivan Campo are soon calling us back down the road. I can say with some certainty that they are the best ever band to be named after a former Bolton Wanderers player. With a campfire philosophy, they swap guitars, bang at the tablas and have a whole box of interesting things to shake and rattle. If Peter, Björn and John destroyed your perceptions of the whistle, Ivan Campo may just rekindle the joy.

Later, Jay Jay Pistolet exchanged the Bay Horse's microphone with something resembling a showerhead, but the gorgeous megaphone crackle created luscious music-hall acoustics. Despite some dead air space where a band should be, his modest love songs wrapped up the weekend with poignancy. See you next year?

    MAPS Festival @ Northern Quarter

    Katie Storey
    26/ 5/2008

MUSIC Arts Poetry and Stuff, aka MAPS Festival, rocked into Manchester on May Bank Holiday weekend.

Over 200 bands took to the stages in venues across the Northern Quarter to launch this new creative break through festival.

From acoustic street sets by The Travelling Band to die hard death metal fans there was something for everyone, it was just a case of crawling the bars to find a hidden gem.

Just when you thought head banging had died a death along with leather trousers, the Ruby Lounge offered up a back-to-back duo of female fronted heavy metal goth rockers.

Screeching into action Incassum took to the stage led by a feisty vamp with graveyard vocals.

Before handing over control to Gone Till Winter whose haunted house intro paved the way for selection of soundtracks that seemed to have been stolen from teen slasher flicks.

Nevertheless it would be hard to deny the lead singers vocal ability captured amidst the band's eerie possessed puppetry.

The undisputed diamond in the rough could only be Shanty Town who played the Dry Bar on Saturday night.

Hailing from Salford the group of local lads got the party started when they took to the stage.

Charismatic front man Paul Edwards' enthusiasm and swagger rallied a heaving posse of adoring fans and kamikaze crowd surfers.

Chanting, cheering and causing security some trouble Shanty Town stole the show,

Literally ending on a high the lead singer was carried aloft by the crowd and didn't even miss a note before finishing their set.

Fast, furious and difficult to pigeonhole, slightly punky part indie, but impossible to dislike, Shanty Town are undoubtedly an undiscovered talent.

Meanwhile, back in the bat cave, First Black President at The Castle proved to be a hit with the intellectuals, improvising with their use of drumsticks, which seemed like a novel attempt to mask the high pitched feedback.

Ten Bears made a truck stop at Roadhouse to drop some dirty bass lines and one or two cabaret intros.

The folk funk five piece with a country edge headlined the venue stomping out tunes to keep the audience entertained with the help of their own superstar compare.

Sunday afternoon took a mellower tone with flute folk fusion from Risa Hall at Mr Scruff's cup cake hangout.

Plugging in and tuning up, the gigs rolled on throughout bank holiday Monday before the working week kicked back in; and although musicians seemed to out number visitors at MAPS, this creative showcase has all the potential to gain a reputation as a hub for the best of Manchester talent.
