Prog-Metal Band JAW to Release in the U.S.A.

SWINGS HUMANS on Reversed Records - March 24th, 2009

"JAW HAS PROGRESSIVE ELEMENTS SIMILAR TO THAT OF TOOL, BUT ENOUGH THUNDEROUS METAL ACTION TO MAKE THEM ALL THEIR OWN" - JAMES KORBA, STYLUS MAGAZINE.

"JAW MIXES THE EXPERIMENTATION OF TOOL WITH A BIT OF DEATH METAL AND PROG ROCK"
- MIKE WARKENTIN, UPTOWN MAGAZINE.

Hollywood, CA (February 3, 2009) – Canadian Prog-Metal band JAW is releasing their sophomore album SWINGS HUMANS on Reversed Records on March 24th, 2009. Their efforts to unify musical experimentation and a message of personal evolution, is clearly in evidence on an absolutely meticulously crafted eight-song affair.

JAW is power, an unrestrained force possessing an unorthodox songwriting style. Fearlessly they innovate as they push for change. JAW is an inherent talent, a creative David in world of conformist Goliaths.

JAW formed in 2001 when vocalist Emmanuel Olarewaju and guitarist Jason Dokken met through serendipity at a music store in their hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. After months of searching for individuals who shared in their creative vision, Olarewaju and Dokken recruited bassist Pablo Riedel and drummer Kevin Kornelsen. On July 17th 2001, JAW began. Within a few months of forming, the quartet had written a solid set of songs. These songs only scratched the surface of JAW's potential.

JAW recorded their first EP in November 2002. With EP in hand JAW began tirelessly touring the frigid western Canadian plains through to the eastern coast, while periodically dipping into Minnesota and North Dakota. JAW's live performance impressed to such an extent that within a year the group had sold enough albums to garner a strong following nationwide.

JAW entered The Space Behind A Garage Studios in Winnipeg, Manitoba with producer/engineer Rob Shallcross (Strapping Young Lad, Gwar, Townsend Band, Darkest Hour, Threat Signal) to record SWINGS HUMANS'. The result of this collaboration is of brutality and peace conveyed through movements, from the grandeur of its mountain tops to the voids of its valleys. Soulful, poetic, graceful and mighty, JAW's SWINGS HUMANS reinvents what metal is and can be.

JAW is:

Emmanuel Olarewaju: Vocals
Jason Dokken: Guitar
Pablo Riedel: Bass
Kevin Kornelsen: Drums

I am currently reading a book by Alan Weisman called The World Without us. Early in the book there is a quote and that quote is below in blue. I would like for everyone to share their thoughts on the quote and answer the question related to it.

The firmament is blue forever, and the earth
will long stand firm and bloom in the spring.
But, man, how long will you live?

-Li-Tai-Po/Hans Bethge/Gustave Mahler
The Chinese flute:
Drinking Song of the Sorrow of the Earth
Das Lied Von der Erde

Once I have completed the reading of The World Without Us, I will share my thoughts on it. Additionally, consider picking it up so that we may all discuss together once that time comes.

A Fear Of Death

I awoke to my teddy bear staring at me, screaming.

While screaming it tears itself apart, starting with its button heart.

Working its way up to its fluff for brains, slowly tearing back again.

The clouds that filled my teddy bear, smother my face, no room for air.

Not a single place.

I released my energy into space.

A thought I had:

-Joy and sadness are emotions that are connected.

-That connection creates an emotional spectrum.

-This spectrum represents life and its colors are our moods.

If this is true, then joy cannot exist without sadness and sadness without joy.

Here is the question:

Do you agree or disagree and why?

A question I had a couple months back.

Is there hope for you and I, singular entities with voices that whisper the warnings of calamity?

Something I learned from reading a book called Laws of Form by G. Spencer-Brown while searching for the answer.

Life is mathematics in cycles, add more and subtract less and you will have a fulfilling existence. (This is a metaphoric statement that should not be taken literally)

The video below is a great example of the above.

Now, back to the heading of this blog.

I wonder?

P.s Consider re-listening to Pendulum and Begin Again in that order in our player. The subject matter in both songs relate to the topics above.

I failed yesterday, but others failed as well.
So now I find solace in the fact that I am not alone in my failure.

In addition to the end result, which was failure, I made a half-assed attempt at reaching the goal that I failed to achieve.

Here are the questions: Who amongst us can say with confidence that they strive every single day to reach whatever goal they have set for themselves without deviation? Why is it that so many of use fall victim to the cycle described above?

(Failure is only a word and it does not have to be an eventuality)

JAW

*for clarification sake please note that the person "I" above is no one in particular*

After thought:

Failure defined - Failure refers to the state or condition of not meeting a desirable or intended objective. It may be viewed as the opposite of success.

The words in the above definition that we should focus on are "may be". Failure may be viewed as the opposite of success and success is an entirely subjective state. Now, the definition of the word success is the achievement of an objective/goal. So as long as a person is diligent and works towards an objective/goal there cannot be failure, because failure is a state of mind that may be viewed as the opposite of success, which is also a state of mind. Everyone at one point or another has chosen the state of mind that is failure before begining the tasks necessary in order to achieve the state of mind that is success. An example of this is in the first statements you read above. Success can only come about through diligent work that follows a schedule. This schedule can be modification to adjust for missteps that are made along the way. No one is infallible so mistakes will be made. The key is to learn from your mistakes and not repeat them. With that said, the core goal/objective must remain intact without deviation regardless of setbacks. I know for a fact that without a schedule, goals are almost impossible to achieve. They get lost and scattered by the maze of life.

Emmanuel Olarewaju

There is a method to this madness, I'll get to it soon :)

But first, am I missing anything?

My madness:

When a goal is calling move towards it aware and prepared while dodging the obstacles and jumping the hurtles that attempt to thwart you along the way. Failure does not have to exist and when the end comes you will be content with it.

Welcome to (Step 3)

If you are new to this blog please visit The Gathering (Step 1) and Clarification (Step 2) to get a better understanding of things. We encourage everyone who has something to say to write that thought here.

A contributor to this blog named SEVEN wrote the following statement:

fearful and lonely
a tormented species, we are.
disconnected from our surroundings and our homes.
from the nature of ourselves.
raised on television and propaganda.
bred into manipulation.
we are not as they teach us. we are beautiful. we are powerful. we are without limitation.
this physical body that encases us is but a vehicle in which we are free to roam this reality as we see fit.
don't be misled.
individuality is a common and good thing. "they" use it to make us feel alone. we are not. we are but separate parts of the whole, experiencing ourselves and each other subjectively.
free yourself from captivity of the brain. it only regurgitates information observed in daily life and can be manipulated. explore your mind. there the possibilities are endless.
the mind manifests our thoughts into our reality.
there is no fear there.
we are different aspects of the whole.
we are separate, yet one.
we ARE the light and energy we seek for fulfillment.
reach out.
fear nothing.
for living in fear
isn't living at all.

there is no fear here.

seven

This statement and my subsequent reply, both of which can be found in full in The Gathering and Clarification, prompted a blog contributor named ANTARES to send me a message and in that message I was asked several questions.

The message:

I read that conversation with Seven several times. It is beautiful, passionate, wild, yet spiritual, all at once. Yes, it's all of that and more, and... And it's like a dream, a beautiful dream, one of those you don't want to wake up from and try to prolong just a little more before reality sets in, and eventually you're forced to open your eyes and let go of it...

"If only everyone understood the potential that they hold inside..." Emmanuel, you are so much more positive than I am. Perhaps it's true that everyone holds some potential inside, but it isn't said that potential is beautiful. You and Seven seem to maybe start from the core assumption that humans are inherently positive beings, stunted and twisted by lies, propaganda, society etc. But we ARE society, we are the lies, and maybe they are not lies at all, then, maybe they are just mirrors showing what humans are inside. Maybe we aren't beautiful at all.

We blame society for everything, conformity, lack of questioning, as if society were an entity other than ourselves, as if it were not us. And sometimes we underline this idea by talking of "them", of those who supposedly have the reins of society. "They" want us to do this and "They" want us to believe that, but who are these omnipresent yet shadowy "they", whom we invest with dark powers over the mind of the masses? Would they not hold the same beautiful potential? Are they not caught in the same web they spin because of the self-propagating nature of conformity? But if so, then why do we refer to them as "they" and not "us"?

WHY is it easier not to question everything? WHY is it easier to believe the lies, Emmanuel? If we are those beautiful beings, if the truths of our subconscious were luminous, then why is it easier? I don't want to ask these questions, because the answers point to the possibility that there is much potential for ugliness (for lack of a better word, even though most call it evil, but that would not be correct, and it'd be a completely different discussion). I don't want to ask them, yet I refuse to avoid them.

Antares

My Answer:

To Paraphrase Seven with a twist, "they" and "us", "them", "you" and "I" are all different aspects of the whole. We are separate, yet one. "They" are our reflection; "They" are the parasite who point out what we imagine to be our imperfections. "They" are a part of us.

With that said, I believe that we, as humans in today society, have an incredible amount of information available to us. This information includes a lot of lies, some half-truths and many unanswered questions. Before the advent of the information age our computer was ignorance, our truth was a lie. We no longer have that excuse to fall back on. We are more aware today then we have ever been before. We know that those who we call "They" are in control because we put them there. We put them there when our truth was a lie, when our computer was ignorance. They are still there, because they are a parasitic part of us, who has learned to manipulate the hand that feeds it. We have the device needed in order to remove this leech that feeds on us, that device is this conversation. This conversation will begin the process of severing that part of us, that part that points out what we imagine to be our imperfections in our reflection, that part that deludes us into believing that we need to hold onto the ways of the past. Once the leech is removed, it will shrivel and die. The battle that we have within our heads will finally end, and in that moment we will fully realize the nothingness that consumed us for so long. We will refocus and begin to rewrite our destiny.

Emmanuel

Post Script: Why is it easier to believe the lies? Because we have yet to amputate our parasite.

After thought: Hopefully the following will further clarify my answer above. Also my words may seem a little redundant, but redundancy is a necessity for absorbency :)

I was asked the following question, "wouldn't it be better to "absorb" the parasite?"

My Answer:

We are the only species to my knowledge that has the ability to shape their own eventuality through thought. What we become a thousand years from now is entirely up to us and to me that is absolutely awe inspiring. In order to learn how to shape what we will become; we must first take control of what we are. We've taken the first step by having this conversation; the second step is accepting who is in the mirror. That is a tall order I know, we have evolved into incredible superficial beings. Emptiness and superficiality are best friends and their neighbour is extreme conformity. We dislike what we see in our reflections, we become empty. We are empty, now there is plenty of room for self-loathing, which manifests itself into the hatred of others, greed, and a whole host of other undesirables. The media and alike are all drugs that we have created for ourselves, those things are no different then heroin. We are addicted to the flashing lights that keep our minds occupied. This conversation is an intervention; all other things will fall into place once we chose sobriety or at minimum self-control.

Now, to answer your question...

When I use the term parasite, I use it to portray all the things that encompasses a wide range of undesirable traits that we posses as human beings. With that understood, I believe that our core issue resides within our minds, so that is where we must start. Certain aspects of our mind have been infected by the parasite, which has manifested itself through the evolution of our society. So to me, the parasite is society as it is. Yes, yes, the society that we have created for ourselves up to this point. Our tendency towards self-loathing due to societal pressures is stifling. Now, this is not a part of use that we need to absorb, this is a part of us that we need to discard. In order to eradicate any plague, one must first understand its symptoms, understand how it metastasises and observe its lesions. So yes, we must absorb something and that something is knowledge and with that knowledge comes the sword of wisdom. With that in mind and hand, we must sever/amputate/cut free from this parasitic cancer that has metastasised for so long within our minds, within our homes. We must embark on this difficult journey, because we do not need this part of us any longer. It holds us down, preventing us from reaching the strata within our minds.

Nothing worth doing is ever easy and the above will be difficult.

FURTHER CLARIFICATION:

"Our tendency towards self-loathing due to societal pressures is stifling."

I was asked the following question regarding the statement I made above, "Is this the emptiness one fills {in order} to feel {like} part of society?"

My Answer:

Yes and more. I will give two examples out of thousands of possible examples.

The mind stifling begins:

A person feels satisfied with the accumulation of material goods that they have acquired over the years. That person in our society would feel a constant bombarded from all directions by messages from thousands of sources, on a daily basis. Those messages suggest that he or she needs more "things", and more "things" after that. This bombardment weakens their mind until emptiness ensues; in turn that person wants more "things" in order to fill the void that has been created. A second example, a beautifully full figured woman, who was raised to feel as such, is bombarded daily with images that contradict the truth of her upbringing. This bombardment weakens her mind until emptiness ensues; in turn her obsession becomes her weight, the application of her make-up and the name associated with her bag.

Self-loathing sets its hooks into the mind:

By design the above trivialities have no possibility of an end result. This is a necessary evil in order for self-loathing to manifest itself into the hatred of others as a coping mechanism. Once this state situates itself comfortable in the mind, the person begins to ridicule others who have less material things, who have a body further away from the image that "they" have set as the unachievable goal. Those who are ridiculed become mind stifled, the parasite metastasis like a cancer through these means.

The cycle begins again, nourished by the suffering of a new host.

Clever aren't "they"?

Emmanuel

(The Statement: Conformity is one of the many by-products of emptiness.)

Check out the blog titled (Step 1) you'll see how the following reply came to be.

"I would have to disagree with this statement as it is written, based on the fact that the actual definition of the word conformity simply means that we choose to abide by certain principles, morals, laws and regulations. Many if not most of which make logical sense and serve a very real purpose in civil society. We do this everyday, lest there be complete and total anarchy and utter disorder. I would have to say that conformity in and of itself does not equate to emptiness necessarily, only when taken to the extreme. On the other hand those who influence our children and warp our minds through media and alike are evil. Those who tell us that we need more because we do not have enough must be stopped. There is so much pressure in our society to conform in this way."

Boots on Roots

I happened upon this tree!

It was an old tree; well it was old to me.

It spoke to me for hours and hours

Relayed to me so many secrets

Yet I learned absolutely nothing

I began to back away then the tree asked, "why no roots?"

I replied, "I have them they are just cover by these boots"

The tree smiled at me and said, "I was lucky"

MAYBE…

I took one last step back

Joining the crowd that mocked me while I sat intently listening to the tree in me

Your insides are outside can't you see?

Come and try…does weakness imply parental infanticide?

But instead I gather and run

Watch it run
Watch it run

Watch it raise the slave
