I know many of our local readers wonder what happened to our monthly FILM & FOOD NIGHTS. Well, these last three months we have been busy -- been out & about in the community, participating in a slew of film festivals and giving talks/presentations.
We also needed a bit of a break from hosting these events (they take up A LOT of time - more so than people would think) to be able to take a journey and a few other adventures with our family.

The statistics are terrifying.
Two hundred million Americans are overweight and 100 million are obese. More than 75 million Americans have high blood pressure. 24 million people are diabetic. Heart disease remains the No. 1 cause of death for men and women, followed by stroke and obesity-related cancers. Obesity is about to overtake tobacco as the No. 1 cause of preventable deaths in the United States.
60% of bankruptcies are caused by what has become known as “medical debt.”
Fast food, fast medicine, fast news and fast lives have turned many Americans into a sick, uninformed, indebted, “processed” people.
Processed People features insightful interviews from nine preeminent health and environmental experts/advocates. They discuss how and why Americans got into this mess, and what we can do to break the “processed people” cycle
Harvest 100 Mile Potluck
Celebrate the season of bountiful blessings and thanksgiving.
Bring something (preferably vegetarian) to contribute to the potluck - bring enough food for yourself/family and a bit to share. The primary focus of the ‘Locavore’ potluck is to promote eating whole foods, in their nature-made state, focusing on fresh food from local sources (or as local as possible)
If not FROM BACKYARD then locally produced.
If not LOCALLY PRODUCED, then Organic.
If not ORGANIC, then Family farm.
If not FAMILY FARM, then Local business.
If not a LOCAL BUSINESS, then Fair Trade.
Freedom Garden Swap N Meet
Join local homegrown revolutionaries - swap crops, seeds, expertise and more.
Growing for 21st century food security, FreedomGardens.org is a free interactive, online social community of gardening enthusiasts who are fed up with foreign oil, frequent food miles and high food prices.

Homegrown (56 minutes) is the inspiring true story of a family "living off the grid" in the heart of urban Pasadena, California. They harvest over 6,000 pounds of produce on less than a quarter of an acre, while running a popular website that is known around the world. The film is an intimate human portrait of what it's like to live like "Little House on the Prairie" in the 21st Century.

Film Synopsis

By dawn, the interchange of the 134 Freeway and Interstate 210 is already starting to thrum with traffic. But only a hundred feet away, the Dervaes family has been up for hours. Their surprisingly tiny green oasis is a working farm right in the middle of Pasadena. Once seen as a nutty idea, the family homestead now produces three tons of organic produce a year. Jules and his adult children, Justin, Anaïs and Jordanne speak candidly about what shaped their family and their need for independence. We learn about Jules' father, an oil executive with a green thumb, Jules' adventures as a young man homesteading in New Zealand, and the sorrows and hardships their family has faced over the years, including divorce, lawsuits and a stint foraging for recyclable cans. We watch them wrestle with their quest to live a simple lifestyle even as their website, "Path To Freedom," demands more attention from followers around the world. Originally set up to share farming tips, it now dangles tantalizing prospects of a financial windfall. But what would it mean to sell ad space on their website instead of getting their hands dirty? Would it change their way of life if they got used to easy money? And how will Jules' children be able to buy their own homesteads and carry on in the future? There are no easy answers. But along the way, the Dervaes have grown stronger and found a tight knit community based on family, friends, good food, hard work, and the commitment to tread lightly upon the earth
