Times Record News -

Keith, Scott offer up top-notch CDs

By Don Chance

Friday, May 16, 2008

There’s only one big event in country music over the past couple of weeks, and that’s the release of Toby Keith’s new greatest hits compilation CD.

That’s it.

Even the passing of country legend Eddie Arnold has been all but forgotten in the wake of the Toby Keith thing. Wonder if Toby Keith ever sang any Eddie Arnold songs? I guess we’ll never know.

Oh, well. Let’s get to it.

“35 BIGGEST HITS” BY TOBY KEITH. An A rating? Why not? While he might have peaked as the biggest superstar in country music, there’s no doubt he still amassed a massive legacy of hit country songs and worldwide popularity.

But this isn’t about his popularity. It’s about country music. And, come to think of it, there is some doubt about his new CD. Thirty-five hits? Hmmm. I don’t recall him racking up that many.

On the other hand, nothing about his “35 Biggest Hits” claims they were all No. 1 chart hits. Just that they were hits.

And they, well, mostly were.

Laid out chronologically from 1993’s “Should Have Been A Cowboy” through 2006’s “A Little Too Late,” the two-disc package includes a lot of songs that the hardcore fans will love. And “She’s A Hottie,” the new song at the end of the set, could very well become a big hit, too.

Toby Keith fans will already know what “35 Biggest Hits” is, and nonfans won’t care.

But it is a nice retrospective on an impressive career. (NEXT rating: A)

“LET’S GO PARKIN’ ” BY ROY LEE SCOTT. Oklahoma’s “Flying Cowboy,” Roy Lee Scott, isn’t one of the biggest stars in country music, and that’s too bad. He could be. He might even have been in another time.

Scott’s new CD, “Let’s Go Parkin’,” is a taste of genuine American-style country music that’s as strong as anything that comes to me from Nashville these days.

Kicking off rowdy with “So There” and the delightfully whimsical dance-floor groove of “Country Song Backwards,” Scott proves once again that the best country artists don’t always hit the top of the charts, don’t always get massive radio airplay and don’t always come out of Nashville, Tenn.

Songs like “Writing on the Wall,” “How Does It Feel,” “Sad Songwriter,” “Is It Tonight?” “Your Old Cold Shoulder” (the only song in the set Scott didn’t write) and the title track are all solid and solidly country.

And the five duets with Traci Courtney are truly inspired. What a great female country singer! Courtney and Scott sound every bit as comfortable together as George and Tammy or Conway and Loretta or Kenny and Dolly, or Kenny and Dottie or Kenny and Bonnie or anyone else he ever recorded with.

Good songwriting, good singing, good production. Great, great country album. (NEXT rating: A)
