Following the critically acclaimed debut LP Glider, Seattle
recluse The Sight Below returns with a new EP featuring two new tracks
and three remixes (by Eluvium, Simon Scott [ex-Slowdive] and Norway's
Biosphere - the latter on vinyl only).
For any instrumental music, and particularly ambient electronica, track
titles and visuals are almost as important in expressing intention as
the sounds themselves. By that token, The Sight Below reveals himself
to be a man with a clear musical vision: these tracks do indeed murmur
and the accompanying black and white image (of what looks like lichen
massively magnified) captures the sense of something natural yet
unfamiliar.
As for the music itself, the title track of this EP is closer to a club banger than anything on Glider.
Which is not to say that Pete Tong will be playing it anytime soon. But
any DJs who have time for Modern Love artists such as Pendle Coven and
Echospace could find a place for it in their sets. Drones, crackles and
gently throbbing beats are slowly joined by echoing percussive stabs
and, later, a hi-hat. Layers build then ebb away.
On the other new composition, 'Wishing Me Asleep', ambient swirls and
occasional bursts of static overlap in counterpoint to the 4/4 pulse,
creating a dreamy yet jarring effect similar to that moment when you
jerk awake as you are nodding off on a bus.
Eluvium's remix of debut single 'No Place For Us' adds a drumbeat like
cardiac arrythmia over the most serene noise. Simon Scott on the other
hand dispenses with the drum track of 'At First Sight' in favour of
whispering voices and an enormous rumble of guitar interspersed with
occasional glints of something precious. A track with all the
desolation and beauty of mining gold miles underground.
In turning to key figures of the early 90s shoegazing (Scott) and
ambient scenes (Biosphere), The Sight Below is laying down potential
markers for his next musical journey. In the meantime, it seems
entirely apposite that I am writing these words from a fast train at
dawn on a grey morning having had only two hours' sleep. Ideal
listening conditions for this darkly enveloping music.

The Sight Below's Murmur EP (available digitally and
on limited 12-inch at www.ghostly.com/releases/murmur-ep)
follows in the wintry, twilight-techno wake of last year's
Glider full-length. The foggy, minimalist 4/4 throb of
Gas meets Monolake's glacial textural glaze on "Murmur,"
the Sight Below's most overt dance number. "Wishing Me Asleep" glimmers
and skips like the Field after downing a few melatonin tablets.
Its tranquil pulsations, bulbous kick drums, and distant,
Seefeel-like guitar spray dissolve your stress, resulting in an
unbeatable beatitude. The rest of the EP consists of remixes by
Biosphere, Eluvium, and Simon Scott, all kindred
spirits who instill their ethereal spirits into the Sight Below's deep,
meditative originals. They embellish a vast, enveloping mist of
ambience that's simultaneously forbidding and consoling. - Dave Segal full story here: http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/data-breaker/Content?oid=2532074

"...a magical set by The Sight Below playing tracks from his Glider
album, dreamily etched from two guitars, pedals and laptops. His
shoegazer techno may be more suited for the dark of night, but
nonetheless the music prevailed."

The Seattle-based producer known as The Sight Below feeds stacks of guitars (some lightly plucked, some E-bowed) through a series of delay boxes, and digitally manipulates them until they've reached his no doubt high standards for beautiful squalls of sound. Mindful of both his process and the result, the Sight chose well when he named his debut album Glider, as his music tends to wash over the listener in lush, ambient waves of sound. But it would have perhaps been even more appropriate had he named it Glacier. As his album sound incandescent, gigantic, gorgeous (if a bit cold), slow-moving but seemingly inevitable.
