The Final Crumpage

Last thursday will probably be remembered by most for being the day Blur played Hyde Park but for a select and privileged few it will be marked as the day Coronary Crumpage came to an emotional and joyous conclusion.

Since April 2007, the incredible Montague Arms, with it's jukebox, penny farthing, skeletons, horse-drawn carriage, gong, coffins, cobbles and taxidermy, has played host to the artistic broad church of Crump. The ethos of the night has been to programme music which reflects the diversity and quality of creative activity in London and beyond. Though most of the artists performing were local to London, we were also fortunate enough to welcome talent from Bristol (Alex Taylor), Leeds (Trio VD) and Oxford (Ally Craig).

Each night was promoted with hand drawn posters by Tom Invisible, Leo Invisible, myself and, in one instance, Sarah Scutt. Musicians would generously contribute music for a tailor-made compilation specific to each month's line up, a special souvenir to mark the occasion. Sometimes these would include demos, rehearsal recordings and unreleased material, allowing for rare insight into artistic process. I am still awed by the unprecious and open attitudes of all the artists who so willingly shared their music. The majority of the hard, behind-the-scenes work which facilitated the smooth-running of each night was graciously done by Alice Grant of Cool Dudes fame. Basically without Alice, Crumpage would never have happened.

Though we feared our audience might have been diminished by Blur's gig, which involved our friends Golden Silvers and Foals supporting, the final Crumpage was generously attended and the atmosphere felt celebratory rather than solemn. Ally Craig opened for us with his beautiful, unique and compelling songs. The band set up on the floor in front of the stage creating a warm and intimate atmosphere. I couldn't take my eyes off Ally's extroardinary guitar technique and the set was over far too soon for my liking.

Next up was Jason Yarde's Headtrip. Few people encapsulate the spirit of Crump as comprehensively as Jason Yarde. That dude needs to be appointed spokesperson for Crumpage. His jive is CORRECT!!! (We love you Jason). As I watched the band's raucous and authoritative improvisations, I marvelled at the quality of musicianship and depth of spirit that exists on my doorstep. And to top it all off, we were all witnessing possibly Jason's penultimate gig as an unmarried multi-instrumentalist. Shabba!

By the time we, The Invisible, took to the stage the room was so cooking we barely knew what to do with ourselves. Of the three times we played the Crump, this was definitely my favourite. It's great to have those gigs to look back on as markers of our ongoing development as a band alongside that of the night.

So, goodbye Crumpage and thankyou to Sir Martin of Montague and his colleagues for letting us do what we set out to do in his crazy venue, to everyone who ever came through the doors and got in amongst it, to all who helped us on the door, and those who got involved with promotion, to Alice for being my righthand G brain, running the shizzle down to the bone with consumate grace (everyTIME g brains- I love you!), to Joe for his delphic sound engineering (keep it loose brother). But most importantly, we thank all the artists who performed, without whom the night would've been pretty pointless:

Simon Bookish, Micachu and the Shapes, The Invisible, Alice and the Cool Dudes, Finn Peters, Olivia Chaney, Anna Calvi, Bonsai Big Band, The Final Terror, The Princess and the Pervert, Room of Katinas, Smashed On Sours, Trio VD, Mara Carlyle, Sam Lewis, Def Langoustine, Jason Yarde's Headtrip, Ally Craig, Alex Taylor, Joni Davis, Indurain, Seymour's Fat Ladies, Serafina Steer and Nightime Ron, Limn, Jason Yarde's Trio Wah, Limeheaded Dog...

We love you all. Thankyou so much for your beautiful music.

Hello friends of Crumpage

We hope you've had a lovely bank holiday weekend and are feeling suitably relaxed,
rested and equipped for the week ahead.

We also hope that you will come and join us this Thursday 7th May (not the 3rd as the poster says, whoops)
for this month's Coronary Crumpage at The Montague Arms
featuring the delightful talents of Alex Taylor (all the way from Brizzle),
Trio VD (all the way from Lizzle) and Bonsai Big Band (all the way from Pizzle).

As usual, Crumpage compilation cds, featuring artists who have performed over the last year,
will be on sale at the gratifying rate of £3 per disc! UnBElievable.

Get your jabs and head south. It's a massive look.

Love from
Crumpenstein

Dear Crumpers

It is with some sadness and regret that we must announce the cancellation of Coronary Crumpage on 2nd april.
This is due to a series of extenuating circumstances.

For those of you who were intending to come along, we apologize for any inconvenience caused.
However, fear not, because Trio VD and Bonsai Big Band will be performing along with Alex Taylor
on 7th may. We hope you will be able to come along and bask in these sonic delights.

Thanks for your understanding

Hello Dear Crumpers!

This Thursday 5th March is a very very special CORONARY CRUMPAGE and
I hope very very much that you can make it down. It is with GREAT
pleasure that I announce this line up and invite you along to see:

BIG DAVE
a fantastically exciting project featuring Pat Walden on guitar, Ruth
Goller on bass and Seb Rochford on drums, playing wondrous songs and
sounds. Sheer talent ahoy.

ALICE GRANT AND THE COOL DUDES
will be playing songs of great import with Alice Grant on keys and
vocals, Tom Herbert on double bass and glockenspiel, Ruth Goller on
bass, drums and melodica and Joe Bentley on drums and trombone. An
veritable fruit salad of instrument swapshops.

Due to the high
demand all over the world for Micachu and the Shapes, they sadly will
not be able to join us on Thursday. BUT, we have managed to secure a
fantabulous set of magic and wonder from 2 members of THE INVISIBLE. Tom Herbert and Dave Okumu
will be playing a set of
who-knows-what-as-it-was-only-confirmed-10-minutes-ago-but-definitely-going-to-be-amazing
on bass and guitar, with many pedals and maybe even a stylophone. We
hope to have Micachu back on the Crumpage stage in the very near
future.

Hope you can all make it along....

Lots of love,

The Crumpage Family XX

Boys and girls

This one's gonna be a killer.

Not only will my personal favourite new band, Alice Grant & The Cool Dudes, be performing, featuring Tom 'Beardface' Herbert (The Invisible) on bass, vox and glockenspiel, Ruth 'FanksGott!' Goller (Acoustic Ladyland) on...er... bass, vox, percussion and kit, and Gingerbrains, queen of crump herself, at the helm with a very small keyboard and a very big heart.

As if that wasn't enough, we also have the absurdly talented Sefa Steer taking us into the future with synth and harp-driven songs. (It's a struggle not to release a torrent of overjoyed expletives- I can't quite believe this is happening..)

It doesn't end there either. DJ sets will come courtesy of Seb (Polar Bear) Rochford. I think you all know this will be a VERY strong look.

As the line up was looking so ginger-hot, I figured the only thing to do was to lower the creative tone, so I've started something up with Tom (Def Langoustine) Skinner. I have to be honest - it doesn't actually exist yet, but it will do by thursday. We have a name- Smashed On Sours. And we're developping a concept, which may involve covering the music of our friends/bands we've been in/ourselves/maybe just stuff we're into... Pretty vague, huh?

Whatever it is, it well be fresh and raw and not necessarily very good.

We welcome your support.

All my love

Dave Invisible

Mara Carlyle
Sam Lewis
Bavin

So, I guess the 'summer' is pretty much over. Personal highlights have been a daytrip to Whitstable with Alice Cool Dude and Sefa Steer, imbibing sporadic shochu sours, the Cool Dudes gig at the Goodship (which actually caused me to shed a tear), The Invisible in Cannes, the thought of Tom 'Welsh Panther' Herbert playing 'guitar' with The Final Terror at Glastonbury, the arrival of the magical Mei-Si on planet earth, the Accidental party at Cargo (=my first pvc experience), recording for Matthew Herbert Big Band, 5days spent in the Highlands next to the Glen Livet distillery (developping a penchant for fine whisky), Eska at the Roundhouse, several killer sessions at Rich File's studio and the release of Finn Peter's incredible album and the surrounding tour, to name but a few.

I'm sure you have many tales to share too, so come to The Montague Arms on Thursday 4th September and get in amongst it. Following our august break, we will be proudly presenting music from the magical Mara Carlyle (who will be travelling accross an ocean to be with us), the unfeesibly talented and handsome Sam Lewis, and the historically-helmeted Bavin, who choose to hide their faces behind medieval buckets presumably out of an integrity-heavy desire to let the electronics do the talking.

It's gonna be a beaut.

See you there.

With love from

Hello dears,

I just wanted to say a big big big thank you to all the many people who came to the fantastic Coronary Crumpage 1. It was such a huge pleasure to see so many people crumping out to the incredible music of Micachu and the Shapes, Simon Bookish with his amazing new band, and The Invisible with the wondrous Pete on electronics. What an amazing night....I hope you can all make it along to the next Crumpage on 1st May featuring Finn Peters’ Finntet, Jason Yarde’s Trio Wah! and Alice Grant and The Cool Dudes (see the new amazing flyer for details) and tell your friends and family to come too...

If anyone wants to get involved with a bit of Crumpage voluntary work (giving out flyers, being a door person, blahblah...), that would be amazing. And you get a free ticket to Crumpage, so that’s surely great.

Thanks thanks thanks. It was brilliant. Photos to follow...

Love and kisses,

Alice Crump xx
