Not only does it sport the best cover art of 2009, but this single by Austin art-punk noise makers When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth backs it up with stellar yet chaotic results, dealing heavy dual drumming against unrelenting vocals, and drunk rock riffs going over the same familiar ground as their drug-addled predecessors before them. Slivers of their Texas psychedelic roots shine through these two songs, but they run over piles of sludged-out, damaged rock along the way, giving the impression of how much of a genius train wreck music can be sometimes. 300 copies.

With the growing trend of bass and drum or guitar and drum duos these days, you almost have to crack a smile when you see a band like When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth aiming for "the more the merrier" angle. The band happens to contain two singers (both of which sing in a manner that can hardly be deciphered), two guitarists, two drummers, and a bassist. And what place could spawn such a noisy and crowded mess such as this one you ask? Well only Austin, TX of course which has always seemingly gone above in beyond in developing the best in scuzzy alcohol fueled rock and apparently that value continues to live on in bands like When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth.

Not Noiice is the bands second album I believe, released through the Chalk Circle label earlier this year. The albums eleven tracks range from slow lumbering numbers to spazzy freakouts and often characteristics can both be found in the same song. While the jumps from one noisy extreme to the other may not be for everyone, it really doesn't interfere with the bands main focus of laying waste to your eardrums and completely rocking. In fact, for people that have been listening to this type of thing for years, how could this be a deterrent? This is the type of noisy mayhem that you want to take part in. Also, the band seems to have a bit of a sense of humor as evidenced by the video they shot for their song "It's Not the Heat, It's the Humidity", which has been embedded below.

Here is a clip of us playing Hypnotic Locks at Pat's in the Flats in Cleveland. It sounds a lot better than I would have expected. Pats in the Flats is very dear to our hearts. Hearts to friends in Cleveland and a special thanks to Pat for being so cool to us everytime.

p.s.

NN was reviewed on pfork today. 4.1 points away from a perfect score. We're stoked!

The review is very accurate. Here is our favorite part:

"There's something here that almost offhandedly threatens to be really special, so once they manage to sort out where their sludgy irony belongs and where their ecstatic sincerity can shine, they should have something that's really noiice."

Whilst crisscrossing our great nation with a friend, eliminating items from our respective "Bucket Lists," I found myself in our nation's capitol. The primary attraction was obvious: the bones of long-extinct giants found in the Smithsonian. Standing in their presence, fully assembled and monolithic, two things were immediately apparent: these creatures, in their halcyon days of Jurassic chaos, were innately great, but hanging out with them would have been a really bad time. And there's nothing I like more than a great bad time, which is something Austin, TX's When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth knows a thing or two about.

Any punk band coming out of Texas has a high mark to hit, considering the drug-and-dust-coated pantheon that ranges from The Butthole Surfers to the homophobe-baiting blues-punk OGs The Dicks. While Dinosaurs doesn't work according to party lines stylistically, it's got scuz for days and sounds legitimately troubled/troubling. An astute friend of mine pointed out recently that "two drummers" is the new "no bass player," but you know what? I'll take it. Dinosaurs has the two drummers (nice and stoopid), the two vocalists (alternately lobotomy-blank and spittle-dripping manic); everything you need for your art-punk house party gone horribly awry. Armed with these tools, it's hard to go wrong, and Dinosaurs acquits itself admirably.

The stand-out one-two punch is "Hypnotic Locks," which ends with a dizzying freakout, perfectly setting up the head-nod riffs of "It's Not the Heat, It's the Humidity." The one aspect of Not Noiice that gave me a moment of pause was the slightly vague air of aimlessness: it's all a great mess, but... why? Of course, the answer is "Why not?" and that's good enough for me. They're nihilists, sure, but there's plenty here to be afraid of.

The members of the seven-piece Austin collective known as When Dinosaurs Ruled The Earth sound like they skipped their rabies shots and went straight to the bar. And lit it on fire. A big, hulking beast of an album, Not Noiice is panting, heaving platter of unpolished brilliance. "Toeing The Line" is a shambolic beauty; "It's Casual" is a searing slice of runaway post-punk and "Hypnotic Locks" hums along with a discernible psychedelic edge. Be forewarned: these eleven numbers aren't pop songs, they're the shards of pop songs tossed freely over the cliff. In other words, total chaos. Elsewhere, "Sick Legs" is a menacing grinder; "It's Been Trippy, Mississippi" sounds like the Flaming Lips caught in the gears of a big rig and "It's Casual" is a joyfully fierce romp. Look, this isn't for everyone and let's face it, "Big Fuck Party" will never be a holiday classic, but if you've got old Jesus Lizard vinyl in the attic or stay up late YouTubing Scratch Acid live clips, When Dinosaurs Ruled The Earth are for you and frankly, they're as good as the Noise band revival is going to get.

Austin is indeed a band factory, incubating some of the most refreshing sounds and music in the country. Emerging from their own musical eggs in 2005, members of Tuxedo Killers, Dakota Building, Awesome Cool Dudes, and Oh Beast! - all of which still perform on their own - have evolved into this distinctive behemoth.

When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth's sound is comparable to the Pixies, Sonic Youth, Pavement, and other bands who ruled the 90's alternative scene. These bands had the unpredictable, eruptive instrumentals of dinosaurs trudging through towering conifers and scaring smaller mammals with spastic vocals. The two screaming pterodactyls of this band are Jesse Hodges and George Dishner. Guitarists Marc Voorhees and Nate Cross, along with drummers Daniel Francis Doyle and Brandon Crowe, make sure we know that fossils can come alive by turning out such songs as "It's Not the Heat It's the Humidity" and "Big Fuck Party". Cory Plump's bass line on "Hairvest" brings to mind a raptor's sure-footed pace towards his prey. WDRE's music is not only an extended yearbook of the 90's, but their lumbering sounds also make you realize that these prehistoric animals can still be found in the South.
