Hello reader,
yet more nice words about 'The Sun Might Shine Bright' EP, this time from Americana UK...

'Jangly indie pop with tempered energy and no little innovative flair surround this five track EP in a fashion that augurs well for the fledgling Lancastrian five-piece

Stephen Hudson (guitar, lead vocals) who writes all five songs gains excellent support on the well arranged ‘Cruel To Be Kind’ that is not to be confused with the Nick Lowe song, and ‘Roll On Holy Roller’. A twin personality affair it starts out rocking in a fashion akin to the 1980s American west coast band, The Lonesome Strangers (fronted by Jeff Rymes and Randy Weekes) only to slow, dramatically and become an aching ballad. That has band members Paul Dobson (guitar), Phil Norcross (drums) add effective vocals to the repetitive line ‘if it’s alright with you I might grow old’. Simple, but with the hard-driven rock theme that returns it fits perfectly.

As for the title cut ‘The Sun Might Shine Bright’ it jangles and swirls in a hooky, hypnotic fashion with the free feel of the band’s music superbly underlined by more smart lyrics as Hudson’s speaks of "how this will all pay off and we will all be stinking rich".

While the dreamy ‘Hailstorm Waltz’ and album closer ‘Moon Landing’ may not be as strong but are nevertheless creditable as the band’s innovative art is underlined.'

Below is a review of our EP from the lovely Atomic Duster webzine, originally found

Uncle Jeff - The Sun Might Shine Brightly (Barn Box Records)
31/07/2009
N: Introducing a quintet hailing from Lancashire, which it has to be said do manage to find their way under the skin pretty quickly when first introduced to this their debut. The band have already garnered much critical praise, from Time Out to the NME and with music like this on offer, it comes as no surprise. Theirs has been described as "upbeat indie folk", with influences of Grandaddy to The Pixies. These really are a given, but the arrangement goes further than just this 2-dimensional view, as a palatte of such wealth is presented and being an ep, the listener is offered 5 powerful tunes. We've heard some great new bands this year, but I have to say that for me Uncle Jeff rate highly among these.

T: This is what I would imagine The Waterboys would have sounded like had they signed to Postcard records. I'm surprised Violent Femmes aren't listed as an influence, especially given the upbeat indie folk tag you speak of. All the same, it's an impressive collection and I can't see Uncle Jeff dancing embarrassingly at wedding discos for the foreseeable future. 9/10

Good evening,
In characteristically casual fashion, it seems only proper to finally dish out some previous on the record we find ourselves flinging into the world.
Whether sleeping top-to-toe in the bed of the all drumming, all engineering, and utterly beautiful Tom Peters (with David preferring to rest in his home-made self-proclaimed "dream tent"), or watching the Peters' family cat eating a mouse, the days spent recording these tunes were happy times indeed.

Holing ourselves up in Bashall Eaves Village Hall, in the Forest of Bowland, Lancs, we'd record from 9 in the morning til way past our bedtimes every day, for a week or two, then be off back to our crappy day-jobs until next time.

There was no television, no girls and no crumpets, but we had the internet, boys and toast so things never got too monotonous.  One night we even had a visit from GOD, or at least, were the unexpected recipients of one of his many messages, squealed crackling and impromptu across an AM radio wave by an evangelical preacher-man.  We were recording the guitar lick to Hailstorm Waltz, and quite unexpected from the amp came a voice proclaiming us "children of Satan" and other such religous slanderings. We pressed record and immediately had our middle 8 sussed.

Below is a little selection of photographs of our adventures but before i cut and paste those,  a debt of thanks is owed to the following people who helped us make our record: Tom, Alan and Juliet Peters and the rest of the family, Luke Foster, Michael Mullen, Chris Hamley, Chris Smith, Fred Kindt, Simon at the Grand and Mick Armistead. Ta.

A massive thank you to all of the wonderful people who came to our EP release party last week, and to the fantastic Ponies, and magnificent Married To The Sea (Whose EP I'm listening to as I write-Ace) for giving up their evening to play with us. We really appreciate all the support on what was a pretty great evening all round.

But pressing onward the Uncle Jeff tour-micra (M reg) is clocking up the miles across the lanes of our verdant isle over the coming month. Our erstwhile sturmbahnfuhrer Stefan Hudson is conducting a particularly mutinous trip to the shores of Withington, Manchester this coming Friday to perform one of his superb solo sets at the Fuel Cafe. If you're in the area, get down, as it will be a fantastic set, and the tea is really nice too. DO IT!

As for the band, we're venturing down to Warton, near Preston  for an outdoor gig on 15th August and then down to Worcester for a gig at the Marrs Bar before coming back up north to don our flat caps for a spot at the Hordens, Blackburn.

and I'm looking forward to the Barnbox all-dayer in october already! If anyone has any information on these mythical barnbox t-shirts.....

People across the globe were stunned into silence today before focussing their attentions on a small pub in the provincial town of Lancaster, England after recently deceased pop star Michael Jackson appeared on the pitch during a rain delayed opening day of the third test at Edgbaston. The formerly black, now deceased pop star, who claims to have developed a love for cricket during his three weeks in heaven, appeared in a blinding flash of light, heralded by a phalanx of cherubim and three score ten boy seraphic angels above the wicket at approximately three pm, causing much dismay to Australian captain Ricky Ponting who was facing Andrew Flintoff at the time.
The former king of pop exuded a supernatural pale glow, much as he did during his latter days, and was wearing a white toga on which were clearly embroidered the words:           " Uncle Jeff Are Fucking Boss, And God Thinks So Too".
Giving his first interview since his death Jackson explained that Lancaster based alternative rock band Uncle Jeff were the hottest band in both heaven AND hell at the minute (the only band ever to hold that accolade) and went on to claim that despite owning the rights to the entire Beatles catalogue, he'd never heard anything as good as their debut EP. he continued, stating that the decision to return from the afterlife was based around his desire to catch their EP release party on Friday at the Yorkshire House. The pop mega-star then answered further questions from shocked journalists before taking his seat, in the family stand, to watch the remainder of the days play.

In the wake of this event, mortal fans of Uncle Jeff are advised to get to the Yorkshire House, Lancaster, as early as possible to ensure tickets as Jackson, surrounded by two dozen bodyguards sporting wings, halos and flaming swords will be arriving at the venue at half past eight.

Hi all,
our gig today on the bandstand at Stanley Park, Blackpool, has been cancelled due to the rubbish rainy weather.
It should be rescheduled some time in the near future,
Apologies

Hello,

I'll be playing a rare old solo set at The Continental in Preston, this weekend (Sat 11th).
I'm on in the afternoon at 2pm, which is probably the optimum time to hear musicians at cider festivals.

It should be lovely,

Stephen

Oh, below is a live review of us at our recent gig with Suicidal Birds.

"Having seen front man Stephen Hudson perform a brilliant solo set at The Totally Wired re-launch a couple of months ago, I was intrigued to hear what the much talked about Uncle Jeff could offer.  What impressed me was the high level of professionalism present amongst the band members – they were extraordinarily tight yet they managed to make it seem so effortless. It became immediately clear during their set that these guys are serious about reaching the big time and if that is indeed their goal then their certainly heading in the right direction. The band has a wide range of influences from melodic indie pop by way of The Lemonheads and The Eels to a slight Americana influence from Yo La Tengo.  There is also a psychedelic sheen to their songs, particularly the closing track which climaxed with a veritable tidal wave of feedback and distortion which brought to mind avant-garde experimental artists such as …And you know us by the trail of the dead and to a lesser extent Mercury Rev and Early Flaming Lips. What was most impressive was how they managed to combine and focus such disparate influences into one unique sound. It is a rare thing for me to be so blown away by new bands; however Uncle Jeff managed to do so in spades. Alongside 3d Tanx, Ponies, The Lovely Eggs and Joyeux, Uncle Jeff are in very fine company. I for one will certainly be attending their EP release party on the 31st July."  Reza Mills, Lunecy review

Current mood:  excited
This week I'm going to properly spoil my ears. Not one- not two- but THREE of my favourite bands in Lancaster are bringing out records this week. This is crazynonsense!
If you have ears, i recommend you could do much worse than head to the yorkshire house tomorrow and watch Homemade Lemonade and Ponies songs from their new LPs, and then on Friday Hows my Pop are doing a similar thing at the gregson centre.

C'mon.
HO!

Stephen

When the bassist from The Random Family fell over in the street and sprained his ankle outside Fuel on Friday, he probably thought it was going to be the start of a crappy night.
But, even without Savlon, he and the band played a lovely set, as did fellow Liverpuddings Married to the Sea and our LCR homeboys - Homemade Lemonade.
It was a super do, the place was rammed tight, so thank you very much everybody who came.

If you missed it, you can catch 1/4 of the guilty party (that being us) at the Pangaea Festival in Manchester this Thursday.  We are playing at the Club Academy which is a basement type thing so I'm told, so bring your torch.

Bye bye
