The early 1930's were a pivotal point in the History of American music. The depression seemed to bring on a wave of heartfelt popular songs in which love and hope were the order of the day. The early years of swing produced some of the most memorable and beautiful music this country has ever created and although much of it lives on under the auspices of "standards" (tunes from musicals by great writers like the Gershwins, Irving Berlin, Harold Arlen and Rogers and Hart to name a few) many great "Tin Pan Alley" tunes are all but forgotten in today's world. Although "Sunny and her Joy Boys" music is not restricted to this EXACT period, its concept was most definitely inspired by this wonderful musical era. It is my goal, and I believe the groups also to bring this music in its natural acoustic state to audiences around the globe. The world, in my humble opinion, is in dire need of such pure, romantic and hopeful music and I hope you will listen, enjoy, and tell all your friends to check us out and come see us when we are in you're area. You could even request us at your local listening music venue. Our first CD will be released in February on Stony Plain Records. Hope to see you at a "Sunny and her Joy Boys" show in the future!

Saturday August 9th....... Today I'm in Kitchener, Ontario getting ready to perform at
the Blues Fest herevwith the DRB. I spent the morning drilling the arrangements into my
head for the upcoming "Sunny and her Joy Boys" session. We are all very excited about our
project and I personally, can't wait to begin. I would like to say a few words about the
band members....... Of course this project is built around our wonderful singer Sunny Crownover.
I just can't say enough about this woman! She's an interesting dichotomy in as much as she
has more determination and drive than just about anyone I've ever met (male OR female) Yet,
as a vocalist she employs a rare quality of taste and restraint which is all but lost in
today's music world. She possesses an angelic but soulful voice and her ability to inject intense
feeling into a line with just a simple bend of a note or minimal smokey rasp is a quality you
don't learn, but are born with. I was blown away when she started learning the repertoire and it
 came so naturally to her.
Billy Novick has been a friend for many years and while we've had
occasion to work together from time to time this project gives us reason to join forces in music
that we both love. Billy has been performing and recording classic jazz for several decades
(often with the amzing fingerstyle guitarist Guy Van Duser)and I have always loved his choice of material.
In fact, I've repeatedly been jealous that he's he recorded many of my favorite early 30s tunes before
I had a chance to! He truly is a master of his chosen idiom on both clarinet and alto sax and it's
a pleasure and an honor to work with him.
Paul Kolesnikow and I have been playing together on and off now for quite a few years. His knowledge of
jazz and music theory is formidable and he's been an important part of dissecting ancient material to figure
out just what they were playing on very old low-fi recordings so we can interpret the songs correctly.
It truly has been a labor of love the last few months and I'm more excited about music now than I've ever been
and this group and music are the reason.
Jesse Williams, our bassist is one of the more fun musicians I've played with. He swings like mad and you
can feel the Joy of the music when you play with him. Being a longtime member of the Duke Robillard Band he
knows what I am about which is essential to us "clicking."
Well, it's back to .practicing for me!
