NEWS DECEMBER 2009
Thank you for a great year of shows. I didn't know what to expect, supporting my first solo release Trunk Songs... I've learned a lot. Playing as a solo act has taken some getting used to, but I feel great about it. The HOBEX and Dillon Fence gigs have been really enjoyable too. I'm excited for the coming year! Thanks again for your encouragement and support.
DECEMBER
Wanted to let you know about few more just-added acoustic shows in December! On Sunday, December 20th, i'll be playing twice... first up, I'll be stopping by Sadlacks in Raleigh NC to play a few songs around 5 pm at Kenny Roby's Holiday Hootenanny. This show is free, but donations are being taken for a friend of Kenny's who is facing some steep medical bills.
For my second Sunday December 20th show, I'm headed over to play an 8 pm set at the Carrboro Christmas Tent Revival. I'll be playing a Trunk Songs set and I'll be backed on a few songs by members of Big Fat Gap. Also appearing: Big Fat Gap, Mandolin Orange, Birds and Arrows, The Sundowners, and Hugh Swaso. I will also probably be sitting in on an electric set by the Tiny Pyramids later in the evening. The event is from 4 - 10 pm and is $10 a person. The address is: Rock Quarry Farm 1700 NC Hwy 54 West Chapel Hill, NC 27516 (3 miles west of Carrboro).
I'll be back in Columbia SC on Saturday, December 26th, performing at The White Mule with Danielle Howle, Josh Roberts, and Mac Leaphart. Saw Danielle at the Red Bank concert on Sunday, and she invited me to play. Should be a festive evening!
On Tuesday December 29th at 8 pm, I'm hosting the third Public Nudity Songwriters' Night at the Broad Street Cafe in Durham, NC. Featured this time are songwriters Cyril Lance and Mark Simonsen. You may know Cyril from his band, Outskirts of Infinity Arkestra... he is also the Chief Engineer at Moog Music and an outstanding guitar player. You know multi-instrumentalist Mark from his work in The Old Ceremony and the many other projects he's contributed to. Hope you'll celebrate with us!
PA, NYC, and ATL SHOWS
I have already booked a few shows in the new year; opening for Chris Smither at the Sellersville Theater in Sellersville PA on January 9th. The following night, Saturday January 10th, I'm finally playing a Trunk Songs show in NYC! I'll be at Banjo Jim's at 9 pm. I'll be sharing the bill with my friend Chip Robinson, a great songwriter and former frontman for the Backsliders. I'll be returning to the Atlanta GA on February 13th for a show at the Red Light Cafe, opening for Steve Forbert.

Thanks for a great October. Winding down the year with some November and December shows closer to home... also doing some work on my as-yet untitled next album, which i hope to release in early 2010. I've really enjoyed getting out and playing acoustic shows this year in support of Trunk Songs; learned alot and I'm looking forward to next year. Thank you very much for your support and encouragement!
NOVEMBER
On Sunday, November 8th, Snuzzfest West is happening at Greensboro NC's Blind Tiger. A great music lineup is in place for this show, the second installment of our attempt to help Britt Uzzell raise money for some tough medical bills in his fight against lymphoma. I'll be playing and singing a couple of his fantastic songs. If you can't make it to the show, You can contribute to the cause via paypal: snuzzfest at gmail dot com.
I'll be performing a solo set opening for the Carolina Chocolate Drops in Blowing Rock NC at Canyons on Wednesday, November 18th. I'm very glad to be playing with the Drops again - they are on fire these days and I can't wait for this show. You can have a listen to my September Cat's Cradle set opening for the Drops here.
On Tuesday November 24th at 8 pm, We're having the second installment of Public Nudity Songwriters' Night at the Broad Street Cafe in Durham, NC. This a new songwriter series I'm hosting; featured this time are a couple of area songwriters, Michael Holland and Kenny Roby.
Michael has been releasing some great bluegrassy, folky solo albums since his time in Jennyanykind; Kenny has also put out some excellent solo and ensemble work since his days fronting alt.country act Six String Drag. Should be an enjoyable night for fans of songcraft and stories. The first installment was memorable - Peter Holsapple dug deep into his amazing catalog of songs and wowed us all. No, we didn't take our clothes off.
HOBEX is playing on Thanksgiving weekend! On Friday, November 27th, we'll be at the Pour House Music Hall in Raleigh NC. The lovely and talented Jeanne Jolly opens the show. This will be our one and only club show of 2009(!), and most likely our last show of the year... hope to see a bunch of our HOBEX people there.
DECEMBER
Although Jonathan Byrd was unable to be there for our September songwriters' night, we're making up for it! We're teaming up for a double bill at the Pittsboro General Store on Friday, December 4th at 8:30 pm. I'll be doing a solo set; Jon will probably be joining me for some tunes and I'll be joining his band for some tunes.
On Saturday, December 5th, I'm returning to Charlotte NC for an 8 pm solo show at the Evening Muse. This time I'm sharing the bill with Birds or Monsters, the side project of Carolina Chocolate Drops' Justin Robinson. I recorded the as-yet-unreleased Birds or Monsters Album earlier this year - it's a very interesting and creative mix of genres and well worth checking out.
Before heading home, I'll be stopping by Lexington SC on Sunday, December 6th to sing a song or two for Christmas at Redbank - an annual benefit organised by Kevin Oliver for Lexington Interfaith Community Services. Others scheduled to perform include Danielle Howle and Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion.
COMPILATIONS
I am honored to be included on a couple of great new benefit compilations for your consideration:
Homegrown Music For The Soil is now available online here and at Whole Foods locations - the proceeds from this compilation benefit Feed the Farm, an organization created to help family farmers in NC. In addition to my song Buttons and Strings,The track listing includes a great roster of central North Carolina artists.
Crowd around the Mic is an annual compilation CD put out by WNCW, created from live performances in Studio B. You can only get this comp by pledging to the station... this year's comp (Vol.13) includes an acoustic version of Natural Child by Gibb Droll and myself, from our February '09 Studio B appearance.

October has just been a blurry blast so far! Haven't had a month this busy for awhile. HOBEX had a great set at the Main Event Block party... taper John Bischman has already posted a recording on Archive.org. You can download it and/or stream it right here... please do!
My solo dates in the Pacific Northwest were incredibly fun, thanks to my buddy Andrew McKeag of the Presidents of the United States of America. He played some smokin' guitar, put me up, and drove me around to all the gigs. What a friend! Also got to watch The Presidents rock a Microsoft party... heh heh.
If you missed these NW dates, plans are in the works for another run in the near future. The venues would like to have me back.... we're gonna do it again and I'm climbing Mt. Ranier next time. Really enjoyed my Maryland gigs with Hugh McGowan and David Glaser this past weekend as well - wonderful songs, guys. Thanks to my pals old and new that made it out to the shows!
DILLON FENCE THIS WEEKEND
Dillon Fence is playing at the Turnage Theater in Washington NC this Saturday, October 17th! This show has been organized by our friend Emma Stallings Holdscher. Drummer Scott Carle, Bassist Chris Goode, Guitarist Kent Alphin, and myself would love to see you there - advance tickets are available at the Turnage Theater site.
A little background on the Fence for those unfamiliar: This fall happens to be the 20th anniversary of our self-titled self-released Dillon Fence EP. We had been playing on the weekends for three years, saving up money to record and release a record. The unexpected success of this 1989 debut EP sent us on a 5 year touring journey that started on the southeastern college circuit, playing to sellout crowds alongside groups like the Connells, Hootie, and Dave Matthews Band.
A later deal with Chapel-Hill indie rock label Mammoth Records led to three full-length albums and US and European tours with Flat Duo Jets, X, Weezer, the Lemonheads, and the Black Crowes. Lots and lots of rock shows... up to 250 dates a year. Whew! We stopped touring in 1995.
Since 2000, we've been reconvening at least once or twice a year... we just enjoy seeing each other and playing our catalog of music. Of course, it's always great to see our old friends and fans there! Thank you all for your amazing support over these 20 years. See you at the show.
MORE OCTOBER DATES ADDED
I've added a couple more shows at the end of October. On Friday October 23rd, I'll be taking part in David Dozier's annual music festival, held this year at Brevard NC's Jordan Street Cafe. HOBEX bassist Andy Ware and I will play be playing an electric set with world class drummer Jeff Sipe... expect some special guests as well!
On Tuesday October 27th, I'll be hosting the first installment of Public Nudity Songwriters' Night, a new songwriter series I'm doing at the Broad Street Cafe in Durham, NC. My first guests are a couple of area songwriters, Jonathan Byrd and Peter Holsapple. If you don't know them, you should!
Jon is a rising star on the folk circuit - just a flat-out great writer. Peter is an inspiring songwriter who has fronted Continental Drifters and my heroes the dBs, in addition to long stints with R.E.M. and Hootie. He and his family relocated to Durham after Katrina hit New Orleans.
Here's an opportunity to see these guys in a casual songwriters-in-the-round environment. The next installment is on Tuesday November 24 with Michael Holland and Kenny Roby... more to come.
NOVEMBER DATES
Got some good November shows lined up. First up is Snuzzfest West at Greensboro NC's Blind Tiger on November 8th! On Wednesday, November 18th, I'll be performing a solo set opening for the Carolina Chocolate Drops at Canyons in Blowing Rock NC So glad to be playing with the Drops again - If you haven't seen them yet, you need to. They are on fire and I can't wait for this show.
HOBEX has added a show for Thanksgiving weekend! On Friday, November 27th, we'll be at the Pour House Music Hall in Raleigh NC. The lovely and talented Jeanne Jolly opens the show. This will be our one and only club show of 2009, and most likely our last show of the year. See y'all there!

While Gibb Droll was in town doing some Trunk Songs dates with me earlier this year, we found the time to do a few recording sessions in between shows . We got down a great version of Gibb's song Birmingham, a nice cover of Blue Velvet, and a few numbers that we wrote on the spot. We thought you'd enjoy it so we're releasing some tunes digitally as an EP called Bull Session. Also featured on the EP are my sister Ann Humphreys on vocals and virtuoso John Garris on Fiddle. Available soon on Itunes, Rhapsody, Emusic et al.

I'm pecking away at another solo release; think it's going to be a strong batch of songs. My sister Ann and I have begun recording an EP together as well. Hope to see you this Fall! Don't know if I've thanked you lately, but thanks again for your support of Musicians and Songwriters.
Cheers,
Greg

Recorded by festival soundman John Lloyd, This is a great sounding set running though favorites from our various albums. Longtime bassist Andy Ware and I were joined by Guitarist Gibb Droll (Keller Williams, Brandi Carlile, Marc Broussard), Drummer Rob Ladd (Roger Daltrey, Don Henley, Pressure Boys, Don Dixon, Let's Active etc.), Organist David McCracken (Donna the Buffalo, Clifton Chenier), and vocalist / percussionist / Chapel-Hill favorite Taz Halloween. I have uploaded a track, Rollin' 4/16/09, to our Reverbnation music player at the HOBEX site, if you'd like to check it out!
HOBEX had a blast at Summer on Trade - here's vid of us doing an impromptu version Curtis Mayfield's Move On Up, shot by our friend elf Goode. HOBEX has one more show on the books for '09: we'll be playing at the Flat Rock Music Festival on Friday, September 25. We'll be on the Main Stage at 10 PM. I will be doing a Trunk Songs set as well on the 25th, at the Mountain Express Stage at 6:45 PM.
Dillon Fence is playing a show this fall! We'll be at the Turnage Theater in Washington NC on Saturday, October 17th. Spearheaded by our friend Emma Holdscher and featuring the Carle / Goode / Alphin / Humphreys lineup, this'll be a great chance for eastern NC Fence fans to see the band again. I've been working on another solo release and my sister Ann and I are recording an EP soon... Hope to see you in September!
Cheers,
Greg
If you'd like to listen to Trunk Songs, it's streaming at greghumphreys.net . If you'd like to buy Trunk Songs, Physical copies are available at our online store. Its available at Itunes, Emusic, Rhapsody, and other digital outlets; there will also be copies for sale at live shows. I created a cool lil' music video out of cell phone vids for the song "All You Know is Blue" from Trunk Songs. Check it out and see how many people / places you recognize - NSFW, though!
Trunk Songs has received some nice press -
Independent Weekly "...these tracks prove Humphreys is capable of mostly anything" - Chris Parker
Yes Weekly "...yet another feather in the cap of a North Carolina treasure" - Ryan Snyder
Winston-Salem Journal "...a document of one man‘s musical journey and a quiet testimonial to musical integrity." - Ed Baumgardner
Mountain Xpress "...comes on like a gentle breeze but contains the power to knock the listener for a loop.." - Alli Marshall

Hey! Hope you're enjoying your Summer times. July shows with Mark Bryan and my sister Ann were awesome. Been doing alot of recording and mixing here in Durham, both for myself and for some other great projects. I have couple of Trunk Songs shows in August. On Thursday, August 8th,I'm playing a couple of solo sets from 6 - 9 PM at Pittsboro NC's Carolina Brewery for their one year anniversary celebration. I'll be doing another Trunk Songs set at The Berkeley Cafe in Raleigh NC on Sunday August 9th, as a part of a triple bill with Jeanne Jolly and Stone Honey. Come early - my set is at 7 PM! Jeanne is a great singer and Stone Honey brings the So-Cal country rock harmonies. On Saturday, August 8th, HOBEX returns to Summer on Trade, Winston-Salem NC's summer concert series. This has been a throwdown in the past - looking forward to seeing alot of my triangle-area friends at this one. I've had alot of folks ask me when I'll be playing any Trunk Songs shows outside the region... well, we're starting to book a few. I'm playing the DC area in September, opening for the great Chris Smither on September 19th at the Ram's Head Tavern in Annapolis MD. I have a couple more DC-area shows in the works for October - more on that soon.
Fence fans! Spread the word that Dillon Fence is playing a show this fall. We'll be at the Turnage Theater in Washington NC on October 17th. Longtime bassist Andy Ware and I were joined by an All-star lineup on this show: Guitarist Gibb Droll (Keller Williams, Brandi Carlile, Marc Broussard), Drummer Rob Ladd (Roger Daltrey, Don Henley, Pressure Boys, Don Dixon, Let's Active etc.), Organist David McCracken (Donna the Buffalo, Clifton Chenier), and Chapel-Hill favorite Taz Halloween on backing vocals and percussion.
Recorded by festival soundman John Lloyd, This is a great sounding set running though HOBEX live favorites from our various albums. This is a digital-only release - should be available soon on Itunes, Emusic, Rhapsody et al at the links below. I have uploaded a track, Rollin', to our reverbnation music player - it's available through this email at the links below and at the HOBEX site, if you'd like to have a listen.
I have another digital release in the pipeline for the fall - a duo EP from Gibb Droll and I that we're calling Bull Session. When Gibb was in town doing some Trunk Songs dates with me, we found the time to do a few recording sessions in between shows - we got down a great version of Gibb's song Birmingham, a nice cover of Blue Velvet, and a few numbers that we wrote on the spot. We thought you'd enjoy it. Also featured on the EP are my sister Ann Humphreys on vocals and virtuoso John Garris on Fiddle.

Hey y'all. Hope you're having a nice Summer so far. HOBEX returns for a couple of shows in August and September... just wanted to let you know about some acoustic shows I'm doing in July. First up is an acoustic duo show this Friday, July 3rd, with my sister Ann at the Carrboro NC neighborhood hangout Johnny's of Carrboro. This show is free and we'll be doing a couple of sets starting around 7 PM. Expect some sibling harmony... we'll be singing some classic country and soul tunes in addition to songs from the Humphreys catalog.
I'm headed to Charleston SC to perform a Trunk Songs set as a part of Awendaw Green's Grass on the Green Festival on Sunday, July 12th. My special guest for this show joining me on Mandolin will be my old friend Mark Bryan of Hootie and The Blowfish. We will be playing later in the day... This festival is a benefit for Windwood Farm and Pet Helpers and features a great roster of talent on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets and info at the website.
The following Thursday, July 16th. I will be returning to Brevard NC to perform a solo set for the Duckpond at Dusk Summer concert series. These concerts are held on an outdoor stage right on the French Broad River, just outside of Brevard. If you were thinking of going to the Mountains this Summer, this'd be a good reason to go. Hope to have some special guests on this one, too. Check the Duckpond at dusk myspace page for directions - it's easy to find!
On Saturday July 25th, sister Ann and I will reprise our acoustic duo at Pittsboro NC's new hotspot The City Tap. We'll be doing a couple of sets from 7 - 10 PM.
I have a couple of early August shows I'd like to mention... on Saturday, August 8th, HOBEX returns to Summer on Trade, Winston-Salem NC's summer concert series. HOBEX is playing Bandtogether this Saturday June 6th in Raleigh NC! This is a great fundraiser for the Lucy Daniels Center and tickets are available at the Lincoln Website.
Joining me for the Bandtogether set will be Andy Ware on Bass, Rob Ladd on Drums, and David McCracken on keys. To get a taste of this line-up, check out Tom Laney's youtube videos of Natural Child, Groove Baby, So Far Away, and Playin' Games from our April set at Shakori Hills Festival (also featuring the amazing guitarist Gibb Droll and vocalist Taz Halloween.)
I'm headed to Charlotte NC next week for a solo set, a just-added co-bill with my old friend Danielle Howle. We'll be at the Evening Muse on Friday June 12th. Its an early show... my Trunk Songs set is at 8 PM, followed by a Danielle set celebrating her new CD release.

It'll be held in the parking lot of The Brick House, located on Hillsborough St. across from Meredith College's main entrance. Check their website for directions.
Just got back from ten days at the Kerrville Folk Festival, one of the most songwriterly events I've ever been to. I traded tunes around the campfire about every night with a very talented truckload of songwriters roaming the ranch; made some great new friends from all over the country. I was also part of a songwriters' circle recorded for WDBX - anyone from Southern Illinois should listen for it on Wednesday morning's Folk Fiasco program.
A song from my Trunk Songs CD, Buttons and Strings, is on an upcoming compilation release distributed by Redeye called Homegrown Music for the Soil. The proceeds from this compilation will benefit Feed the Farm, an organization created to help family farmers in NC. The track listing includes a great roster of central North Carolina artists: Tift Merritt, Midtown Dickens, Chatham County Line, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Caitlin Cary and Thad Cockrell, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Megafaun, Mike Slaton and The wheels, Tres Chicas, Southern Culture on the Skids, The Proclivities, Two Dollar pistols, and The Moaners. More information on this release soon -
One of my Dillon Fence songs, Living Room Scene, was recently named one of the 100 Greatest North Carolina songs by Yes! Weekly. Honored to be included. It's an interesting list - check it out if you're a fan of NC music.
I have added some Trunk Songs shows for July. I'm headed to Charleston SC to perform as a part of Awendaw Green's Bluegrass festival on Saturday, July 12th. Joining me on Mandolin will be my old friend Mark Bryan of Hootie and The Blowfish... more details soon. I will be returning to beautiful Brevard NC to perform a solo set for the Duckpond at Dusk series on Thursday, July 16th.
Closer to home in July, I'll be doing a a couple of low-key acoustic duo shows with my sister Ann. Hope to see y'all this summer!
Cheers,
Greg
