The last month has been an eventful one in the world of The Havelocks. On 1st November lead guitarist & vocalist Lennie Tranter and vocalist Jay Piper played an acoustic set at the Nymagee Outback Festival. The set saw the two frontmen of The Havelocks perform stripped back versions of fan favourites including "Words", "The Ladder" and "Tired As Me", as well as the sound-boarding of new songs such as the Everly Brother-esque "Waisting Mine". The boys also invited travelling folk troubador Jonesy to the stage to accompanying them on mandolin for renditions of Havelock classics such as "Never Go" and "Mind Around It". Not surprisingly, the boys won over the awestruck crowd, recieving rowdy applause, requests for CDs and at the end of their set demands for an encore. Lennie and Jay would like to thank the organises of the Nymagee Outback Festival for having them. The last month has also seen The Havelocks reaching new highs on the Triple J Unearthed Charts. Thanks to the loyal and keen support of fans, the band has had alll three of their Unearthed songs reach the Top 30 of the Overall Charts, with "The Darkness" reaching no.9, "The Ladder" hitting no.16 and "Never Go" entering the charts at no.25 in its first week. "Never Go" has no climbed to no.9, pushing "The Darkness" down to no.19 on the overall charts. The Havelocks would like to thank all their friends and fans who have shown their support by rating and reviewing the songs on their Unearthed site. Those of you wishing to show your support can log onto http://www.triplejunearthed.com/thehavelocks and listen, rate/review the songs. Free mp3 downloads of all the songs on the Unearthed website are also available. In other news, the boys recently supported The Clap and Truth Ruby at the Hamilton Station Hotel (11th November), recieving a more than enthusiatic response from punters and fans alike. The band will be playing at the Cambridge Hotel on Wednesday 25th November, so make sure you get along with your friends to the venue and join in the festivities as the boys celebrate bass player Lawrence's 21st birthday. Pre-gig drinks from 8.30pm with the boys kicking off at 9.10pm - so make sure you're they early! As usual stay tuned to The Havelocks' myspace and facebook pages for upcoming gig dates, new recordings, and everything Havelock

Over the last month and a half The Havelocks have been busy breaking new ground. With their usual flare and laid-back style the band has been exposing themselves in ways they have never done before, appearing on a podcast, playing gigs and recording new material. The boys were featured on the Loft's podcast "Ninja Radio" on 16th September to do an interview and play an exclusive set for the exciting youth show. The band expounded their views on many subjects including the pros and cons of certain venues, sound engineers and what turns them on (with drummer Luke Tweedie declaring his weakness for Justin Timberlake, vocalist Jay Piper's apparent disdain for lazy soundmen, and songwriter Lennie Tranter's love of parliamentary question time). The boys then followed up with a short set of fan favourites including "Words" which can be seen by clicking on the following link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70ZIp4Y1aRw On 19th September as part of Jay Piper's buck show celebrations The Havelocks headlined a great night of music at the View Factory. With Piper in full "dress" the boys played to a raucus crowd of enthusiastic fans who proceeded to sing along and dance the night away in typical fevered style. In the first half of October The Havelocks headlined gigs at the Lass O'Gowrie (a great night) and Newcastle's Brackets and Jam, which also featured local songstress Amy Vee. The band has also been busy with the ongoing recording process of a new body of work. Some of the initial rough mixes of the songs are now featured on the band's myspace, with final mastered tracks still in the process of being produced. The band is currently seeking a few different producers to work on the tracks and will decide upon the best mixes in the coming months. In other news, Lennie, Jay and Craig will be heading outback to perform on the Blackboard Acoustic Stage (ran by longtime friends BSRD) at the Nymagee Outback Festival this weekend. The boys will play a warm up gig for the festival on Friday 30th October, and will also perform on Saturday 31st when the festival proper begins. As usual, keep your eyes on the band's myspace and facebook sites for more news and upcoming gig dates. Photos by Estelle Macrow

The Havelocks are back online after some troubles with the internet over the past month and a half. Here's what the boys have been up to...
Over the last month
and a half The Havelocks have been extremely busy playing gigs around Newcastle and the Central Coast, as well as working on a new set
of recordings. After impressing crowds at the View Factory and the Lass
O’Gowrie hotel in early August, the band went on to play a brilliant set at
Lizotte’s in Lambton on 12th August winning over punters and
management alike with their trademark harmonies and catchy tunes. Later in the
month the boys played at the Cambridge Hotel and also travelled down to the
Chilli Lounge in Wyong to play a support slot for Sydney singer-songwriter Sarakula. On 2nd
September the band played at the Hamilton Station hotel to a crowd which
included loyal fans as well as beer stained punters, some of whom proceeded to
dance the night away and attempt to sing along with The Havelocks’ irresistible
songs.
Since early August The Havelocks have been
working on a set of new recordings including fan favourites and some of the
band’s newest tracks. Three of these recordings will soon be available at The
Havelocks’ gigs on a CD simply titled August ’09 and will also be posted
on the band’s myspace. The band hopes to have a larger body of work completed
by mid September.
In other news, the band will be appearing on
The Loft’s podcast on their Ninja Radio site this coming Wednesday. The band will be interviewed and
perform a selection of their songs, so be sure to check out http://ninjaradio.podbean.com this coming Wednesday night for the live podcast.
Stay tuned for more regular updates from The
Havelocks on their myspace and facebook sites with announcements on up-coming
gigs, including the View Factory gig THIS Saturday 19th September! Be sure to get along!

On Saturday 1st August The Havelocks headlined a night of great local music at Newcastle's View Factory. Kicking off the evening was singer-songwriter Gilbert Whyte with his captivating voice and beautifully crafted songs. The Owls then took to the stage to deliver a set of their Britpop inspired songs, setting up the crowd for a night of high-energy rock music. The Karma Cops then followed with a rocking set of sweat-inducing tunes which kept the crowd on their feet and ready for more. The Havelocks then proceeded to play through what many fans deemed their best set ever with brutally raw renditions of songs such as Tired As Me and When I Walk, beautiful versions of fan favourites such as The Ladder and Words, as well as an awe-inspiring performance of If I Get Lonely - which is fast becoming a band, as well as fan favourite. The band finished off the evening with the blues inspired rock of Row Boat before launching into an improvised version of Cash's Folsom Prison Blues after screaming fans and punters yelled for more. The Havelocks would like to thank everyone who came and supported them at the View Factory on Saturday - the gigs wouldn't be half as good without you all dancing and cheering along, you're all brilliant! Above: The Havelocks at the View Factory on 1st August (photos by Sam & Jane) The Havelocks will be playing this Wednesday at the Cambridge supporting Shaded Glass, and on the 12th August at Lizotte's in Lambton. As always the details of these and more gigs are up on The Havelocks' myspace site.

The Havelocks featured in this week's edition of The Newcastle Post in the T.E section. Below is a transcript of the article. A View for The Havelocks “This will be a night to remember, a really rockin’ night.” This is what vocalist and lead guitarist Lennie Tranter says of his band The Havelocks’ first gig at the View Factory on 1st August. A gig which will see four of Newcastle’s most exciting up and coming bands come together to put on a night of high-energy, sweat and powerful songs. The Havelocks will be joined by Newcastle rockers The Karma Cops, The Owls and Gilbert White.
The Havelocks have been performing as a five-piece for only a couple of months, but have already impressed audiences and won new fans with their catchy, rock-fuelled songs and carefully crafted three-part harmonies. Led by vocalist and guitarist Lennie Tranter, the group is completed by the soul-inspired vocal tones of Jay Piper, the awesome rhythmic power of guitarist Craig Whibley, the melodic bass lines of Lawrence D’Silva, and the heathenish beats of drummer Luke Tweedie.
“We’re really excited about the View Factory,” says Tranter. “It’s a great venue and there’ll be some great bands there.” The Havelocks are playing at the View Factory on 1st August, supported by The Karma Cops, The Owls and Gilbert Whyte.

On Friday 17th July The Havelocks played in the Red Bar at the Cambridge Hotel supporting former Machine Gun Fellatio frontman Pinky Beecroft for Sounds Acoustic. Opening the night was Newcastle trio The James Buckingham Experience who stirred the crowd into of frenzy of applause, warming up the venue for a night of fun and music. With rhythm guitarist and resident nutter Craig Whibley absent due to swine flu quarantine, The Havelocks took to the stage next with a stripped-back, acoustic set which set the crowd alight. The boys hit the crowd with a barrage of their sing-along songs and trademark harmonies, with newcommers asking at regular intervals: "Was that a cover?" Being answered in the negative the punters replied: "That's a classic!" And it the appreciation did not stop with the punters. After playing through a set of fan favourites and new songs, Pinky Beecroft extended his support to the band by thanking The Havelocks for a great set. The Havelocks would like to thank Jess from Sounds Acoustic for organising a night of great music; Pinky Beecroft and his White Russians for a brilliant set; The James Buckingham Experience for the laughs; and most of all the band would like to thank all the fans and friends who came and supported them - we can't do it without you! On Saturday 18th July, The Havelocks minus quarantined Whibley, hit Beaumont Street in Hamilton for a free street gig. The boys impressed the people of Hamilton with a series of sets in different locations along Beaumont Street from 2.30pm until 6.00pm. The boys enjoyed themselves so much, that regular street gigs have been planned - so keep your eyes peeled when your in the Newcastle area on weekends, because you might just come across The Havelocks! Photos by Samantha Burkett With Craig Whibley coming out of quarantine yesterday, The Havelocks will be headlining at The Chilli Lounge in Wyong this coming Friday 24th July with the doors opening at 8pm and tickets only $10. On Sunday the band will be playing at the Hamilton Station Hotel with free music from 9pm. More gigs, including next weeks headlining spot at the View Factory on 1st August are up on The Havelocks' myspace site.

The Havelocks entered three tracks into this year's 1233 ABC Newcastle Music Awards. After much deliberation amongst band members, the group decided to record versions of "Words", "Tired As Me", and "When I Walk" to enter into the competition. Always looking for a challenge, The Havelocks recorded the three tracks in just two days in an effort to achieve a 'live' atmosphere and vibe in the songs. Having listened to the finished songs the band then decided which categories to enter them in, putting the catchy sing-along tune "Words" into the pop category, with fan favourite "Tired As Me" and the Piper-led "When I Walk" both being entered into the rock category. Fans can listen to the songs at http://contribute.abc.net.au/thehavelocks and the band encourages devotees to register with the ABC Contribute website and rate the songs. The recordings can also be found on The Havelocks' myspace site www.myspace.com/thehavelocks. The three songs will also appear on a new cd, which will be available within the next fortnight. Fans who bought tickets for the Pulse Night Spot gig will be given free copies of the cds, as will the winners of the creative comments competition, which will remain open for one more week. To get your own free copy of the cd simply add a creative comment on The Havelocks' new recordings either on the myspace site, or the ABC Contribute website. Photo by Samantha Burkett

The Havelocks were featured in the TE section of this week's edition of The Post. Read the article below.
HAVE TIME? Lock in this gig!
HAVING formed just a year ago, the Havelocks have already started to build up a loyal fan base in the Newcastle area, impressing audiences with their trademark harmonies and memorable songs.
Starting out as a three-piece acoustic outfit, the Havelocks played an important role in the Newcastle music scene last year, helping to organise and run the Blue Surf Red Dust festival in Hamilton, performing at some of Newcastle’s premier originals venues, as well as securing a support slot for touring Canadian band, the Judes, and representing Newcastle’s original music scene at the Nymagee Outback Festival. With various line-up changes throughout 2008, foundation members Lennie Tranter (vocals, lead guitar and songwriter) and Craig Whibley (rhythm guitar, vocals) sought to further develop the band’s sound by recruiting new members to redefi ne and revolutionise the Havelocks’ live performances in 2009 and beyond.
Scouring the bars of Beaumont Street, the boys stumbled on English dandy Jay Piper (vocals, acoustic guitar), Lawrence D’Silva (bass) and beer enthusiast Luke Tweedie (drums). The five-piece has since hit the pubs of Newcastle with their retro sound, the bass and drums adding new power to the Havelocks’ addictive songs and providing a new force behind the carefully layered three-part harmonies of Tranter, Whibley and Piper. Fans and punters alike have welcomed this new direction, many asserting that they have not heard “this type of music in years”. Echoes of the Beatles and Crowded House are combined with the energy of the Clash on stage, with Tranter’s singalong tunes rousing even the shyest of punters to shout out in chorus. The Lennon-tinged vocals of Tranter, the blues-inspired growls of Piper and the mellow tones of Whibley are backed up by instantly recognisable guitar licks, D’Silva’s melodic bass runs and Tweedie’s emotionally raw drum beats, creating a unique but familiar sound.
In 2009, the band is set to take their music to a wider audience than ever before, with shows in Melbourne, Port Macquarie and the Central Coast already booked. The Havelocks will play on Wednesday, July 1 with up-and-coming Melbourne band, Lamplight, at the Cambridge Hotel.

The Havelocks played at the Cambridge Hotel last night, supporting Melbourne band Lamplight on their 'A Sun That Will Not Rise' tour. Opening the night was Melbourne songstress Eva Popov, with her beautiful voice and well crafted songs. The Havelocks took to the stage next, bringing with them a solid crowd of devoted fans and a swag of irresistable songs. The band was electric, full of energy which was epitomised in the onstage antics of ever-manic guitarist Craig Whibley, the rhaspy soul tones of vocalist Jay Piper, songwriter Lennie Tranter's Lennon-inspired voice & stinging guitar licks, the melodic bass of Lawrence D'Silva, and Luke Tweedie's Pagan-like drum beats. Singing, dancing and cheering their way through The Havelocks' set, the crowd were just as enthusiastic as the band with many demanding an encore at the conclusion of the band's performance. Lamplight took the stage for the final part of the evening, delivering their haunting brand of music with unique class and subtle brilliance. The Havelocks would like to thank Lamplight for allowing them to contribute to an evening that was full of great music and an exciting atmosphere. The boys would also like to thank their amazing fans who came to the gig to cheer them on - you're all brilliant and it wouldn't be the same without you! In other news, The Havelocks have finished recording their entries for the ABC Newcastle Music Awards. The boys are very excited and are extremely happy with the recordings, which will be available to fans within the next week. The Havelocks are also excited to be supporting former Machine Gun Fellatio frontman Pinky Beecroft in the Red Bar at the Cambridge Hotel on 17th July. Tickets are $12 and can be purchased from the venue on the night. Stay tuned for more news from The Havelocks, including updates on the latest gigs, on the band's myspace.
