MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP
PONTYPRIDD MUNI 1709/09
Given the problems with no shows and poor performances on the last tour, Schenker would really be under the spotlight tonight. The sell-out crowd inside and the hoards milling around for spares outside were certainly expecting a return to form and I am delighted to announce they were not disappointed. The superb M.C. gtfm's own Andy Fox got things going by announcing the arrival of young Bridgend band Your Local Hero. The youngsters proved entertaining openers, full of energy and with loads of synchronised jumping and some handy songs; they went down well with the capacity audience.

Andy Fox returned to the stage to announce that the main support for tonight were Skin (providing a semi-acoustic set), having played the venue earlier in the year as support for Magnum's Bob Catley, a vast majority of the audience were familiar to tracks and were in awe of these stripped down versions by Myke and Nev from the band with guests on keyboard and local guy Rob (?) on percussion. The Skinfreaks erupted when the first few bars of Colourblind were strummed. Nevs curls and gravel edged voice reminded me of a young Dan McCafferty (Nazareth). Look But Don't Touch and especially Which Are The Tears shredding his voice and left him physically drained, they finished of course with the anthemic Tower Of Strength, and proclaimed they were having the time of their lives after recently playing with Mr. Big, Joe Satriani and now Michael Schenker.

The familiar backdrop of the MSG Logo complete with iconic 'Flying V' towered above the stage, and after what seemed like an age, rumours starting that perhaps 'he' wasn't coming, were soon drowned out when the band took to the stage. The enigma of Schenker complete with trademark shock of peroxide hair and dark glasses was completed with a pleasant surprise, The Sensational Alex Harvey Bands' Chris Glenn was there, large as life and looking stones lighter than when I last saw him and boy it helped with his mobility as he stalked and gurned his way around the stage. Gary Barden was magnificent in working the crowd and Wayne Findlay on Guitar and Keyboards with Pete Holmes smashing the skins to within an inch of their life completed a very compact and tight unit. With no new album to promote this set was a fans paradise, hits and classics all the way. Ride on My Way, Cry for the Nationsand Let Sleeping Dogs Lie, all came in an opening salvo, Armed And Ready came next and with this being my favourite M.S.G track I was worried they may have peaked too early. Barden roared at the crowd 'We are in the Rhondda, We know you can sing', and led a mass sing-along of Are You Ready To Rock. The favourites kept coming and then after Attack off the Mad Axeman the band left the stage. Soon they returned with the newer Gipsy Lady and U.F.O's Rock Bottom. Again they retired but we all knew they would return, and they did with a blistering Doctor Doctor.

It was a tremendous evening and Germany’s finest musical export is definitely back on form, For the first time I noticed Michael's Mercedes Benz like tattoo, so two examples of Teutonic perfection for the price of one!!

Hi Guyz!!

Just a quick note to say I'm going back into the Michael Schenker Group (MSG) for the European September dates.
I am also hoping that my side project - Chris Glen & The Outfit will play 2 or 3 dates in or around December, most likely in Scotland.
I will post more news re these shows asap, in the meantime I promise a new video blog will surface prior to the MSG dates, so that should be a laugh, hope to see you out & about
Take Care
