WHY A ..GREEN.. FAIR?!!

Planet earth is under attack! Not from terrorists or martians from outer space, but from you and me, human beings... mankind!!

We all need to alter the way we live if planet earth is to survive. Take a long hard look at the way you live your life. There..s a fair chance that pretty much everything you do effects our environment in some way. Transport, energy, consumerism, food, leisure, waste etc etc all have an enormous impact on the planet.

For the sake of our children..s future, an ever increasing amount of people, organisations & companies are talking about these issues and choosing the least harmful options. Even the government are now taking action, bringing in new laws such as the Climate Change Bill and offering advice to us all on how we should live in order to reduce our personal impact.

No matter how much you know about planet-friendly living, nobody knows it all. As always, there..ll be lots to learn, see and do at the Redditch Green Fair.

REDDITCH GREEN FAIR - SAT 13 JUNE 2009
The 4th annual, independent Redditch Green Fair will take place in and around St Stephens Church in the heart of the town centre. The fair aims to promote sustainable, eco-friendly living by providing a range of green products, fairtrade goods, organic produce, natural gifts etc combined with lots of useful information to help everyone live a cleaner, greener, more ethical and healthier life! ORGANISERS OF THE EVENT
The Redditch Green Fair is made possible thanks to the combined efforts of volunteers from various local grassroots green groups, who originally joined forces to stage the 2006 Fair, under the banner of Redditch Green Alliance. Since then, the groups involved have continued to work together on various issues and have changed their name to Redditch Alliance of Greens(RAG). The alliance comprises local environmental, ethical and social justice groups, all working towards a more sustainable town and planet.

A message from The Campaign for Eco-Veg*nism:

For far too long, those that campaign on environmental matters have ignored the critical issue of animal agriculture, but that situation is swiftly changing! We predict that in years to come, the 8th December 2007 (the date of the first ever Veg*n Climate March) will be seen as the dawn of a new, more enlightened environmental movement. This new movement will fully embrace plant based diets as the solution to many of the catastrophes facing the planet. For anyone who really cares about the environment, the consumption of animal carcasses will become a distant memory and the natural progression from this will be veganism.

The Campaign for Eco-Veg*nism aims to be the catalyst for this environmental revolution! Last year, we made history by staging the world..s first ever Veg*n Climate March and we..ll continue to make history in London on Saturday 6th December 2008. Be there and be part of history!!

Transport available from across the UK.

This year..s National Climate March will take place in London on Saturday 6th December. Upwards of 10,000 people are expected to march from Hyde Park to Parliament Square!

Join us on the streets of London to demand that our government takes urgent and radical action to deal with the climate crisis. NO 3rd runway at Heathrow, NO new coal-fired power stations, NO to agro-fuels and YES to massive investment in renewable energy!!

This March on Parliament marks the Saturday midway through the UN Climate Talks in Poznan, Poland and we make our demands on the UK government in solidarity with the world's poorest and most vulnerable communities that will suffer worst and most immediately from climate change caused overwhelmingly by the rich long-industrialised countries.

We need the government to act now on climate, to stop building coal-fired power stations and new runways - and to begin the renewable energy revolution. We need a tidal wave of people outside parliament to make them act to stop climate catastrophe now! Be part of that tidal wave, be there! Next year may be too late.

Redditch coach transport

Like last year, we intend to book a coach from Redditch. With 80,000 people in Redditch, finding 50 people to fill a coach should be easy! The cost per seat will most likely be £12 waged and £6 un-waged.

Climate change will effect us all, so please let..s get everyone involved in this event! Local schools, colleges, churches, community groups etc and of course members of all the local environmental/social justice groups such as Friends of the Earth, Trade Justice Network, Veggies & Vegans etc.

Let..s make the event fun as well as effective! Dress up as a penguin or a polar bear! There..ll be a prize for the best costume on our coach! Alternatively, make your own big, colourful banners and placards!

Before we book the coach, we need to gauge the amount of interest, so please contact us asap if you will want seats. And please forward details to all your friends, work colleagues, email lists, group contacts etc.

We have lots of event posters and leaflets for anyone that can display/distribute some. For more details about the event, see the Campaign against Climate Change website http://www.campaigncc.org

Green Fair 2008 Report

For many more, larger photos from the event, please see our gallery

On Saturday 7th June 2008, Redditch Town Centre once again turned green for the day thanks to the biggest green fair ever staged in Redditch. For the third year running, a glorious sunny day helped to ensure the independent eco extravaganza was a fantastic success. A record number of 26 stallholders filled St Stephens Church green and the church hall itself.

electric van on display The fair aimed to promote sustainable, eco-friendly ways of living whilst showcasing the regions ever increasing network of ..green.. organisations and companies. Eco-friendly products on sale/display included electric vehicles(see photo), renewable energy systems, ethical clothing, recycled stationery, organic food, fair trade goods, toxic chemical-free cleaning products, re-usable cloth bags, natural cosmetics and lots more.

display exposing the ecological impact of meat & dairy production There were an equal number of stalls raising awareness of a diverse variety of issues including energy efficiency, composting, trade justice in the developing world, waste reduction solutions, the environmental impact of the world..s growing population and the ecological devastation caused by meat and dairy production (the United Nations have reported that livestock farming is responsible for more global greenhouse gas emissions than all the world..s cars, lorries and planes combined!!). Click here for a full list of companies, organisations and campaign groups that held stalls.

drumming circle with Redditch based ..Talking Drums.. Redditch based group Talking Drums invited fair goers to join their ..drumming circle.. and dozens of adults and children jumped at the opportunity to have a go for free. A lead drummer set the beat and others had to copy him. The sound of rythmic beating drums attracted passing shoppers and entertained everyone at the event throughout the day.

..Green Man.. mask making Dozens of children, and their parents, amused themselves making ..Green Man.. masks on the childrens activity table. Using cardboard, paper, leaves, straw, paint, crayons and various other materials, and lots of imagination, children of various ages made numerous colourful, attractive masks, which were in some cases, quite scary! (see our gallery for more photos)

free vegan food was on offer all day Catering was provided on 3 separate stalls throughout the day and all the food was vegan in line with the event..s eco/ethical theme. The wide range of food on the Redditch Vegetarian & Vegan Society stall was free, in order to demonstrate to curious fair goers how delicious and appetising meat and dairy free cuisine can be. Mountains of food had been devoured by the end of the day!

The newly appointed Mayor of Redditch, councillor Jack Field, attended the event and browsed the stalls, meeting stallholders and taking leaflets.

stalls under gazebos filled the church green The fair was held 2 days after World Environment Day(WED), a global day of awareness raising, organised annually by the United Nations, who officially endorsed the fair in Redditch. Hundreds of similar events took place across the globe to mark the biggest date in the ..green.. calendar.

As with last year, we were overwhelmed with the success of the event. Crowds of people flocked into the church grounds throughout the day and all stallholders reported good sales and lots of interest in the issues they were highlighting.

..Green Man.. mask making Whilst government action on environmental issues is vital, it..s equally important for us all to take personal action. Saving the planet doesn..t mean that we have to change our lives beyond recognition. The fair showed hundreds of visitors that by making just a few simple changes to our daily lives, we can protect the planet for future generations.

The message we..re hearing from stallholders over and over again is that they like doing the Redditch Green Fair because of it..s fantastic, beautiful location, in the heart of the town centre where the general public have easy access. Many stallholders are keen to display their products & raise awareness of their issues amongst the ordinary general public whilst they go about their shopping. It..s easy to attract those already into green living, but for people not yet bitten by the green bug, we like to take the green fair to them, rather than expect them to come to us!

The fair will feature a range of local 'green' companies, alongside numerous environmental organisations and campaign groups. If you or someone you know would like to help entertain the kids and encourage families to the event, please get in touch. Ideally, we would like to hear from anyone that can offer their services for free/expenses paid or alternatively at a cheap rate.

Already, there are 24 stalls booked, a mask making workshop, a ..drumming circle.. with Talking Drums, free vegan food, alternative therapists etc.

What can you add to the event? Please get in touch as soon as possible. More details about the event here http://www.redditchgreenfair.org.uk

Redditch Schools Eco Poster Competition

The Redditch Alliance of Greens(RAG) are inviting schools across Redditch to take part in our eco poster competition. In conjunction with World Environment Day, the competition aims to raise awareness of environmental issues and encourage children to think about their personal impact on the planet. The winning posters will be chosen at the Redditch Green Fair on Saturday 7th June.

World Environment Day, commemorated each year on 5 June, is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action.

World Environment Day 2008

The World Environment Day slogan for 2008 is ..Kick the Habit! Towards a Low Carbon Economy... In line with this theme, children should draw/paint posters which focus on greenhouse gas emissions and how to reduce them. Posters could highlight improved energy efficiency, alternative energy sources, forest conservation, eco-friendly consumption etc. All posters should also be relevant to, or feature, Redditch in some way.

All posters should be A3 size. There are 3 age categories - first school, middle and high. The posters will be displayed at the Redditch Green Fair at St Stephens Church on Saturday 7th June, where the winning poster in each category will be chosen. In the event of a larger than anticipated number of entries, we will sort through them in advance, and only display the best at the fair, before selecting the winners.

Entrants should write on the reverse of the posters, their name, age, school and a contact telephone number. All posters should be posted to RAG no later than Saturday 31st May. In order to cut down on the amount of separate parcels we receive, please endeavour to collect posters up within classes and send them en-masse.

Posters should be sent to - Schools Eco Poster Competition, Redditch Alliance of Greens, PO Box 10202, Redditch, Worcs. B98 8YT.

Winning children will be presented with a prize(yet to be decided) at the green fair and we aim to have the winning posters copied and displayed in public buildings etc across the town.
