One of the coolest things to ever hit Lawton is here!  "Jam Session" is your opportunity to play guitar with other people (of similar age and skill level) under the guidance of a talented music instructor.  This is not just group "guitar" lessons........this is for guitarists, bassists, drummers, keyboardists, sax players, etc.  Here are the important bits:

1) The ideal "jam" group would consist of 1 drummer, 1 bassist, 1 keyboardist, and 2-3 guitarists........other instruments (such as sax or trumpet), as well as vocalists, would be welcome.  This would bring the average group size to about 5.

2) Jams would be held for one hour, two Saturdays per month, between noon and four pm.

3) The groups would work up popular songs (yes you get to vote!) and be able to record in a state of the art studio.  They would also get a chance to play together for a live audience several times per year.

4) Jams will be held at the Phillips Music Education Center, immediately east of Phillips Music, 1515 w Gore Lawton, OK.

5) The teacher overseeing the Jams will be Nick Evans. You can read his bio on our "Meet Our Teachers" blog.  Nick plays bass in the professional 80s/90s nostalgia band "Jibber-Jabber", which also features one of our drum instructors, Tony Bertram, on drums and our Ed Center Coordinator David Wilson on Lead Guitar.

6) Jam sessions will improve your ability on your instrument, but will mainly make you think of your instrument as part of a "whole" group.  Guitarists will learn more about rhythm because they'll have to respond to other musicians.  Bassists will learn to lock in with the drummer.  There really is nothing like this around!

7) The price for "Jam Session" is $50 per month, but there are drastic discount for current students.

8) You need to bring the following to "Jam Session":
Vocalists:  Spiral Notebook.  We'll provide a Mic
Drummers: Spiral Notebook and sticks.  Drummers will play on our Roland HD-1 kit.
Guitarists: Spiral Notebook, Guitar, cable, picks, tuner, gig bag......we'll provide amps.
Bassists: Spiral Notebook, Bass, cable, picks, tuner, gig bag.........we'll provide amps.
Keyboardists: Spiral Notebook.  We'll provide a keyboard.
Wind instruments: Spiral Notebook, instrument, appropriate cleaning supplies.

9) "Jammers" only need a tiny bit of experience on their instrument.  Drummers should be able to play very basic beats, bass players should be able to play simple riffs, guitarists should know their basic open chords.

10) Call Phillips Music at (580) 357-1118 and ask for David Wilson............he'll get ya hooked up!

Q: I took guitar lessons before and they were really boring.  What makes your program so different?

A: Man, I've heard that from a bunch of people! Please realize that this is a very broad generalization, but there are a lot of teachers (especially in the "combo" world of guitar, bass, and drums) that just should not be teaching lessons.  Some teachers are just failed wannabe rock stars that realized they have to pay the rent so they start teaching.  This really comes across!  This is usually indicated by (1) a lack of ability to meet individual student's specific needs and (2) not being able to explain just HOW they played such a cool guitar solo.  Many players seem like great musicians until you get them out of their preferred element or ask them to explain what they're doing! These are not people that should be teaching.  Other teachers are the very stodgy type.  This is the classic "I took guitar lessons when I was a kid, but all I got to do was play Mary Had a Little Lamb!" story.  Our lessons challenge the student by teaching the instrument from a RELEVANT perspective.  Music lessons don't have to be always based on a classical repertoire!  Modern country, metal, and even gospel use the same basic musical principles utilized by Mozart and Chopin, so why not use music the student likes, while challenging him or her to constantly broaden their horizons with other listening experiences?

Q: My Uncle George plays guitar (bass/drums etc), can't he teach me?

A: Maybe.  Uncle George can definitely show you some basics, possibly more.  Chances are that Uncle George is self-taught and has many bad habits he has developed over the years.  All of our teachers have demonstrated a deep commitment to learning all aspects of music.  They can sight-read, jam with a blues band, play a rippin' solo, or analyze the harmonic content of a concerto.  If Uncle George can do that, we may have a job for him!

Q: Why do your lessons cost more than the leading brand?

A: First, we ARE the leading brand! This is a subjective issue (see next faq below). There are cheaper lessons out there, but no other program in the area offers anything close to the learning environment we can provide. No one else even close to SW Oklahoma incorporates customized backing tracks, wireless access to 2 ½ million songs, or the option to sign up for jam sessions culminating in the experience of recording with other musicians in an ultra-modern digital recording studio. Plus, our teachers are simply terrific!   Did you know there are people teaching private lessons on guitar/bass/drums that can't read music?  There are also teachers that can read, but could never jump on stage and jam with a country/metal/blues band. Our teachers are not just paid for the time they spend with you, but for their ability to deliver a ton of musical knowledge in a way that best fits the individual student.

Q: Why are your lessons so cheap?

A: We get this one too!  Many people coming from other parts of the country are pleasantly surprised at our low tuition rates.  To put it simply, the cost of living in Lawton is pretty cheap.  We feel our lessons are at a price that makes it worth our while, yet is still within the monthly budget of most families.

Q: What's the deal with the backing tracks?

A: Glad you asked!  We have a huge library of music that we've made ourselves, just for the purpose of education.  If you're enrolled in our weekly program, the teachers will give you these backing tracks as needed.  For example, we know that the songs in a beginning guitar book for 10 year olds can be boring.  But if you get to play along with a rockin' rhythm section of drums, bass, and rhythm guitar, it becomes a lot more fun! Also, it teaches the student how to stay in time with other musicians.  Monthly students are guaranteed a customized-for-the-session backing track with each lesson.

Q: How do I pay for my lessons?

A: PMEC tuition will be automatically debited from your credit/check card on the 27th of the month for the next month's lessons.

Q: What if I miss a lesson?

A: Sometimes, you have to miss a lesson.  If you give 24 hours notice, you can arrange a make-up lesson with your teacher and David Wilson, the education director.  Whenever there is a "5th" lesson day at the end of the month, that day will be used for make-ups.  (Example: If you call on Monday because you can't make your Tuesday lesson, you will be able to make it up.  If there are 5 Thursdays and Fridays that month, you can arrange to make up the lesson on those "5th" days.) There are no make-up opportunities for no-shows. Students also have 3 "vacation" days per year.  Let us know that you're going to be gone and we'll credit your account for vacation days.

Q: One of your teachers, Ryan Ragsdale is very cute.  Is he single?

A: Yes, Ryan is very single AND he's looking send resumes and pics to Ryanragsdale@gmail.com

Our private, one-on-one classes are custom tailored to the student's interests, level, and age.  We have an open-door policy for parent's peace of mind, and a grown-up approach for our adult students.  Currently, we're teaching ages 5-70!

Guitar
-acoustic or electric; country to hardcore---whatever your style, we've got tips, tricks, info, and the teaching style you need to help you master your instrument YOUR way.  We'll make sure you have the guitar skills you need so that your art is limited only by your imagination.

Bass-We have a pair of bass teachers that will make sure you can hold down the bottom in any situation.  Learn to "walk" through a jazz standard, or slap a groove off the stage onto the dance floor-----it's your choice.

Piano/Keys-Our keyboard lessons are designed to give the beginner the same skills that any good piano course provides, but then things get a little more hip!  The modern keyboard player has more options available to him/her than any other musician has.  We will teach you modern styles and classic techniques, while keeping you up to speed on the very latest in technology. We also teach traditional classical piano lessons with an energy and enthusiasm that one doesn't find every day.

Drums/Percussion-Drum lessons are taught on Roland's new HD-1 compact electronic drum set.  Students can be taught slight nuances of percussion technique while enjoying the sound of a great drumset that won't disturb the lessons next door. From paradiddles to blast beats, this is the drum program you've been waiting for.  This class is also perfect for school band percussion students!

Producer Class-Calling all beat-makers!  Our producer class has two kinds of musicians in mind: 1) those who want to create hip-hop, electronic, or r&b music, or 2) those who want to finally figure out how to start making any kind of music on a computer.  The course combines music theory, basic keyboard skills, basic recording techniques, and hands-on experience with whatever software the student has decided to use for recording!  We have teachers that can cover Sonar, Reason, Cubase, Ableton Live, and FL Studio (Frooty Loops).

Woodwinds & Brass-Our woodwinds and brass lessons are perfect for the adult who always wanted to play a wind instrument OR for the school band student who truly wants to rise above the rest.  School band is a great way for kids to be introduced to music, but it isn't possible for a band director to spend one-on-one time with every student.  Our lessons fill in the gap with information and skills that will prepare band students to truly excel at their instruments........a quality that will put them first in line for valuable music scholarships!!!  Talk about an investment that pays off!!!!
