There are so many ways to go.

People ask me, "How do you write a song?" The answer is, it writes me. And there are so many ways that it happens, but when it is really on, it just flows out of you. It just happens.

I wrote a song tonight. It's just for me. I am sure I will share it with you guys at some point, but for now, it is just for me.

Recently, we have written so many songs that it is ridiculous. They have all been collaborations. Aron writes a riff. I put some drums under it, and then throw a guitar line down. Barber comes in and plays some bass (I know that may seem backwards, but that is what is so special about the writing process - it isn't about what instrument you play, it's about what you hear in your head). Allen may throw in some effects. Harry will start singing a hook.

Most of you will never know Harry, but this guy has been a gift from above. He landed on our couch. He is a musical genius. He is very young, but he already has his first grammy. He won it a few weeks ago. I think I am more excited than him about it. He wrote "War with God" on the new Ludacris album.

Maybe one morning I'll come into the studio, Harry and Jon will be there and they'll say, "yo, we haven't slept yet, you have got to hear the song we did last night.", and it will be something that was started at 1 am, right after I took off to go home. And it will be completely new and almost done.

I think at this point we are looking at around 25 to 30 new songs, including the 6 that we played in Sayreville. They are all so different.  So many different styles.

So many great songs.  We have experienced the creative period that I was hoping we would have going into this new album. I am excited to finish the album and get back on the road to start playing these songs.

Tonight. Tonight was different. Tonight I wrote a song by myself for the first time in a few years. I have a lot of beats, a lot of ideas on my hard drive. But the one I started last night stuck out to me as something that I needed to finish. Right now.

So that is what I was doing for the last five hours. Writing. And it felt really good. Writing is funny. You can't make it happen. Sometimes you write two songs in a day. Sometimes you don't write a song for three months. This week I have been writing like a fiend. Usually it happens when we get off of tour for a while. You rejuvenate for a while and then boom, the creative juices start to flow. They are flowing right now. It's 1:44 am and I am going to go write a chorus for this new song!

Peace all,
Marc
