The Slaughters used a powerful defense, and strong consistent jammers
to beat the Wrecking Crew Saturday night in Grand Prairie, 73-50 to
win the championship bout of the Dallas Derby Devils league and
complete and undefeated season. The High Seas Hotties were also
impressive as they won the consolation match 71-49 over the Suicide
Shifters.

The Wrecking Crew opened up the championship match by outscoring the
Slaughterers 11-9 in the first four jams of the bout. But in the
next ten jams, the Slaughterers would get lead jammer nine out of ten
times, and outscore the Crew 29-1 to basically build up a 38-12 half
time lead and for all practical purposes put the game out of reach.

The WC's would come back in the second half, scoring two 9-point jams
in the middle of the period to narrow the lead down to 14 points.
But Slaughterers captain Keltic Kamikaze would respond with a 9-point
jam of her own and draw the lead back out to 23 points. The teams
would trade points on jams back and forth through the remainder of
the game with the final margin being 23 points.

Leading the balanced unofficial scoring for the Slaughterers was
Keltic Kamikaze with 18 points, Ann R Key with 17 points, Death by
Dawn with 16 points, and Pushin' Daisies with 15 points. The team
blocking was a key in the game so it is difficult to single out any
individual players although I had jammer takeouts for Mercy and Ann R
Key during the game, no doubt with many more being made by the team
members of that solid Slaughterer defense.

The unofficial leading scorer and high game scorer was Wrecking Crew
Captain Anita Riot with 27 points. No other jammers scored in double
figures for the Wrecking Crew, but Eve L. Brawler did score 9 points
in one jam, and that jam brought the WC's back within 14 points of
the eventual winners. Some of the top blockers I noticed for the
Wrecking Crew were Lea Havoc and Chilly Villain.

The High Seas Hotties showed they could still play defense and added
in some late offense to beat the Suicide Shifters, 71-49. The
Hotties built up a 31-14 lead at half dominating the Shifters
defensively. The second half they opened up some offense and
outscored the Shifters 40-35 for the final 22 point margin.

Unofficial leading scorers for the High Seas Hotties included G-Town
Butcher 32 points (game high), and Hot For Teacher with 26 points.
Top blockers included the amazing Cheatin' Chong and Wicked Bitch of
the West. Top scorers for the Suicide Shifters was Bits and Pieces
with an unofficial 19 points, Mad Dog with 11, and Ultra Violence
with 10 points. The top blockers for the Shifters were Nitro Jen and
Panther City Princess.

The most memorable individual stars for me Saturday included Keltic
Kamikaze who not only was a physical presence blocking in the game,
but also would end the Wrecking Crew's come-from-behind run in the
second half with a 9-0 jam. Keltic can dodge and cause people to
miss just as well as most speedy smaller jammers, but she is a power
jammer who takes a block and keeps on scoring.

I thought Cheatin' Chong was just amazing. She would play pivot for
three or four straight jams. And while not the fastest skater on the
track she gets superb position on jammers trying to by her at the
front of the pack. Without some blocking help from teammates, or
some serious moves from agile jammers, those jammers just didn't have
a chance against her Saturday night. I had her down for four Jammer
Takeouts, but more likely she had over ten JTO's.

I thought Anita Riot was another star of the game. She was the high
scorer for the championship bout, and consistently used her speed and
quickness to help keep the Wrecking Crew in the game. Saturday night
it didn't look there was a faster skater on the track.

I think the star for the Suicide Shifters I would have chosen was
Bits and Pieces. She had team high 19 points, including an exciting
ten-point jam. For somebody who was best know earlier this season as
a pivot, she has really come on as one of the leagues better jammers.
