From the Daily Record 20th March '09:

Spy Movie - Philip Larkin Said EP

Another Scots band whose musical year zero was the Postcard sound. So as well as the title track referring to the gloomy English poet, the songs have jangly guitars, descending chords and jaunty beats.
'Philip Larkin Said' doesn't quote his poetry, but does reference film Gregory's Girl as singer Kat King's crystal vocals soar.
There's another great wordsmith namechecked in 'What Would Morrissey Say' and for me this is the better tune. It's a catchy cross between Jesus And Mary Chain's April skies era and Stone Roses.
The lyrics are superb as Kat wonders what Morrissey would say about her life: "I feel terribly guilty that I live in Newton Mearns, I'll probably be the last of the gang to die in bed". I reckon Mozza would love this. The band play Cassette,
Glasgow, on Mar 26.

Philip Larkin Said by Spy Movie
Thom Morgan - ThereGoesTheFear

It’s hard to define this band, they’re something like Joy Division fronted by Debbie Harry. The EP is smooth and flows well, opener ‘Philip Larkin Said’ is slightly more pleasant than anything Ian & Co. would have churned out but it maintains a very 80s vibe. The carefully chosen guitar chords towards the end provide a summer feel and the track is indie-pop brilliance..

Second track ‘What Would Morrissey Say?’ is immediately darker and the bass provides a brilliant tone for the track. The lyrics also take a sinister twist; “I walk a lonely road/Of disenchantment, misery and regret.”

The track as a whole seems much more lowbeat and the bass in particular is brilliant in commanding the verses and keeping the song as a whole in rhythm. ‘Keswick’ is the final track on this EP and starts off with a gentle acoustic strum and soft vocals follow.

The band have shown good musical versatility through the record, their tone ranging from the upbeat opener, to the dark ‘What Would Morrissey Say?’ and finally the soft acoustic ‘Keswick.’ Soft on the ears and light on the tone the song brings a good closing to a solid début.

Whilst there are many strong points, the vocals are inconsistent, whilst the delicate voice of Kat is suited to tracks like ‘Keswick,’  the darker tracks demand more haunting vocals (see Ian Curtis (or even Morrissey)This is the only place the EP  falls and perhaps alternating vocals between the male and female leads would serve the backing music better.. All in all though the EP is brilliant..

What would Morrissey say?? Probably well done..

From the March edition of Tasty Fanzine:
Spy Movie - 'Philip Larkin Said' (Viva Genius)

'Sexual intercourse began / in 1963 / which was rather late for / Spy Movie'.
This is what the 80s really sounded like. Big guitar strumming much in the manner of Lloyd Cole, ingenious jazzy vocals and unselfconciously pretentious lyricism. Plus a badge, which has a picture of a real spy on it. Watch out for their 'secret' free gig on the roof of Hull university.

Philip Larkin Said EP review from Blues Bunny
Spy Movie -Philip Larkin Said
No catalogue number -2009

There once was this band from Glasgow called Mouse Eat Mouse. Critics everywhere agreed that they were something special.  Deranged, art house and pretentious were words used to describe them and they were never ever accused of being dull.  However, like so many bands that dared to be different, one day they simply imploded.

Surviving said implosion was Johnny White who decided to start another band called Spy Movie.  This time however, he has eschewed the near Beefheartian splendours of his previous band and went the way of the west end
and this EP easily parks itself near other local luminaries like the Green Peppers and the Ten to Five Project. It's all polished and nicely performed as you would expect and the lyrics show the delicate touch that comes of education
(even managing to reference the film "Gregory's Girl" - how cool is that?). Kat King's vocals have an appealingly wistful edge to them and I have to admit they were the best thing about these songs. Overall though, this EP just lacked the sparkle to make it special.

Unless you wear a cardigan, of course.

Sadly, Dumb Instrument are unable to play at the Note on the 22nd- it's very sad as they're not only brilliant but also good pals : (

However, the very fine Lean Tales have ridden to the rescue and have agreed to join us and play their very cool smiths-influenced jangly pop. We were planning to do a show with them soon, but this just means we get to play with them sooner.

Well, the EP's done- Matt did a great job as usual of the production and also loads of extra stuff here and there above and beyond the call of duty. The three songs have been mastered and it's just about to go off to the manufacturers. We'll have copies for sale at the gig on Feb 22nd at The 13th Note- you'll also be able to buy them here on the offical release date ( Monday 23rd )by clicking the Buy Now button. For me,after all these years, there's still very little in life as exciting as taking the cellophane off a brand new copy of something you've sweated over for months- whether in the writing or the recording, it still gives me a thrill. Mebbe that's the sign that I'm still obsessed with rock and roll and everything around it.

Hey all,
As you'll hear on the player thingummyjig, we've completed the demoing of the a side for the EP. It was great to be back working with Matt again in Maybank and the studio felt very comfortable to be back in, kind of like an old cardigan or pipe. We're going back in on the 16th of January to complete recording of the A Side, Philip Larkin Said and will also be recording the other two EP tracks Keswick and What Would Morrissey Say? What's been interesting for me is that we're using programmed drums for two of the tracks. My old Hardy Boys colleague Michael has been programming them in snowy Toronto and emailing them back and forward for agreement- a strange way to do things but it's certainly saved time.
The EP will be out on Monday the 23rd February and will be available on the night. We had a loooong discussion about the format of the CD- we really thought hard about the physical copies only being available on 3" CDs, but the thought of hand making them all was too much- oh, the pleasures of having them done for you in Eastern Europe, then delivered in boxes shrink wrapped, is just too cool to avoid.

It's all getting quite exciting really...

Hey all,

Our forthcoming debut EP, Philip Larkin Says will be launched at a special show at The 13th Note in Glasgow in February. Playing with us will be The Ex Men and Dumb Instrument- a line up I couldn't be happier with even if it included the entire Morton first team from 1978.

Well friends ( as John McCain ) would say...a bit of news for you from the Spy Movie camp. We're going into the studio on the 5th of December to record the a side for our debut single ( out in February ). I'm looking forward to working again with Matt at Maybank Studios in Glasgow. I worked intensively with Matt on the first Mouse Eat Mouse album and he's a top bloke as well as a very good producer. Our good friend Michael Bonini ( ex Hardy Boys ) in Toronto is programming the drums for us and we're excited about how it's all going to turn out. We'll be recording Philip Larkin Says as the a side and then will go back into the studio in early January to record another two songs.

The three song single ( is that a single or an EP? I dunno ) will be released on the 29th of February and we'll be playing a special launch show at the 13th Note in Glasgow to celebrate. We're hoping that two of our favourite bands of the moment ( The Ex Men and The Just Joans ) will be able to play there with us as well.

The single/ EP will be out on our own label on limited , numbered, CD and from all the usual download stores and will be followed by our debut album later on in the year.

In the meantime, we're currently auditioning some new drummers and should have someone groovy in place very soon.

Hey all,
Sadly, our brilliant drummer Liam has had to call it a day due to other more pressing commitments...we knew we only had him for a short while, but after the gig at the Winchester we said a tearful goodbye. Liam is not only a great drummer but a good bloke and ( unusually for drummers ) very very funny.
We're now going to take a few months out of playing live to work with a new drummer and a new keys player. We'll be working on some new songs and tightening up our set. We'll also be looking at recording too. We'll let you know.

The Winchester was an interesting night in many ways. John D at Pinups took care of us splendidly as usual and we're grateful for him putting us on. The great thing about playing gigs like Pinups is that you sometimes come across bands who, in my view, define everything that's wrong with music ( dull, dull, stupid lad rock ) and also remind my old and tired brain that music is an amazing and weird thing. The Ex Men are a case in point- just two blokes on stage playing wierd electro-funky-Fall-scratchy guitar music and they were fantastic. I loved the songs and the idea of the band- these are two clever dudes who know their rock and roll history and have something to say-unlike the tired lad rock that I'm SO bored with hearing. Is it really still 1996?

Search out The Ex Men- well worth finding.

Onwards and upwards

Well, it's been an interesting few months here at Spy Movie HQ. Our line up has been finalised with the addition of the fantastic Liam on drums-plays like clockwork and has a fine collection of shirts- and the equally superb Mick on guitar-strums like an angel , an angel that is with a beard and long hair. We've been rehearsing regularly in Berkeley Street and the songs are finally coming together the way we want them. Kat has been a real find on vocals and David is the quiet genius behind the band. Me? I kind of stand at the back and play the bass.

We now have a set of songs which we're fairly happy with and are really looking forward to letting you all hear them with the full band. We'll be playing at The 13th Note in Glasgow on the 21st August at the Is This Music? night- for my money, not only the best manky venue in Glasgow but by far the best promoters as well. Chris and his team have an endearing passion and love for music that's really inspiring. On the 21st, we'll be playing with our very good friends Mouse Eat Mouse. I haven't seen the band for a while and it'll be great to hook up with them again. Mouse Eat Mouse contains some of my favourite people of all time and, in CD Shade, the only real poetic genius I've ever worked with in music. It'll be a cracking night.

Hopefully, we'll see some of you there. We'll be nervous as it's our first time really, but oh my lord will it be good.
