Sheena Spikes is Chicago’s sexiest
vegetarian. She is a nominee in PETA’s “Sexiest Vegetarian Next Door”
competition and is 1 of 16 female finalists chosen out of more than a
thousand entries in the United States and Canada.

Sheena Spikes lives in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago with her
husband and fellow vegan, Ryan, and their two dogs, Mason and Phoenix.
Since June 2008, Sheena has adopted a vegan diet in order to combat a
hereditary predisposition to heart disease, lead a healthier
lifestyle, promote ethical treatment of animals, and help save the
earth. In addition to gaining personal benefits of veganism, Sheena
also actively promotes healthy eating in the Chicago community.
Chicago Diner is one of Sheena’s favorite Chicago vegetarian restaurants
the vegan Gyros being one of her favorite dishes.
Although Sheena realizes that a completely vegetarian diet is not for
everyone, she thinks that it should be noted that reportedly, “If each
American reduced his or her meat consumption by just 5 percent,
roughly equivalent to eating one less dish of meat each week, enough
grain would be saved to feed 25 million people - the number estimated
to go hungry in the United States each day.” Also, animal waste is
the principle source of water pollution and according to the EPA, the
largest source of methane emissions, a potent greenhouse gas
contributing to climate change.
Sheena Spikes thinks that people should vote for her as PETA’s
“Sexiest Vegetarian Next Door” because she truly believes in promoting
a vegan diet and educating others on the many benefits of adopting the
lifestyle. Weight loss, lower cholesterol and blood pressure, feeling
and looking great are just a few of the advantages of a vegetarian or
vegan diet. Sheena would like to target and educate young adults and
low-income communities who seldom have access to healthier food
choices. Ultimately, Sheena hopes to garner enough attention about
vegetarianism/veganism to erase the associated stigmas and raise
public awareness of this important issue.

On Thursday Nov 23, 2006, The Chicago Diner & this earth lost a great soul, David Saxner to a sudden heart attack. He was a remarkable husband, father, brother, friend & social advocate. He devoted many years to charity work fighting for the rights of prisoners, winning 2 supreme court cases: one ruling that inmates have the right to sue over deliberately indifferent medical care & the other that established the right of prisoners to have an impartial hearing officer before being disciplined. He worked also to free prisoners who were sentenced to unfair prison terms pre-1978 when judges had unmitigated discretion. TIME magazine reporting on diet & cancer Nov 20, 2006 |
...a new study of Asian-American women done by the National Cancer Institute (NCI)...looked at women who ate a lot of soy-based foods as children, adolescents and adults. The strongest and most consistent association was among women who ate the most soy-based foods from ages 5 to 11. They reduced their risk of developing hormone-fueled breast cancer 58%, compared with women who ate the least. The reduction for women who ate a lot of soy as adolescents and adults was 25%. Regular, moderate consumption of whole-soy foods...probably affects the development of breast tissue in young females, possibly making it more resistant to carcinogens, including estrogenic agents in the environment...."

The current Entertainment Weekly features an interview with Chicago native John C. Reilly. You should recognize this talented actor whose been in such high profile films as "Boogie Nights" & "The Aviator" and now the new Will Ferrell movie "Talladega Nights". The interview lists his favorite things, one of which we modestly mention is yours truly, The Chicago Diner. Carrie at EW called us up and had us send over a snapshot of the joint. We're excited.
 Other items on the entertainment watch: Stevie Wonder's driver called up one morning, before the kitchen was even open asking for some vegan food. All we had to offer was some vegan muffins & scones. The limo pulled up and whisked away some delicious nutritiousness. That was then, now you can get our desserts & bakes at 18 Wholefoods in IL, WI, MI, MN, MO & NE.
AFI visited the dining room recently and joined our Myspace friend list (which you should do too) as well as putting some of our waitrons on their guest list for their show that night. Thanks guys.
 Other recent visits included Panic at the Disco ordering tons of takeout for them & the crew for their show at the Vic, and Marilu Henner, looking as beautiful & engaging as ever. Thanks for stopping by.
Devendra Banhart, psych folk singer/songwriter also dined with us, in town for the Pitchfork Festival.
 Plus, we served Rise Against last month, a progressive & politically vocal band, whose new video: Ready to Fall makes a very powerful pro-animal, pro-environment statement.
Also the upcoming edition of CS Chicago Social Magazine will feature a photo spread of the Diner, highlighting the delicious Grills Gone Wild seitan teriyaki dish. |

We're saying a fond farewell to our youngest waitron Peter aka Baby. After 3 years in Chicago and the Chicago Diner, he's moving on to pursue filmmaking and adventure, travelling in Europe and moving to the west coast. We certainly won't forget the dancing, the clever sayings, the in-your-face charm, whacky hijinks and raucous shenanigans of a style only Peter could bring.
Come by the Diner before Aug 25 for you last taste of the Peter way. On Monday August 14 from 7pm-1am we'll be sharing a drink at Lawry's Tavern at 1028 W Diversey celebrating the life & times of PMB, who will be the friendly barkeep, tip generously (the exchange rate for Euros is not so good these days). Don't forget your dancing shoes on Thursday August 24 we'll be groovin' to the 80's at NEO nightclub 2350 N. Clark (www.neo-chicago.com) after midnight $5 cover, DJ Dave Roberts of Planet Earth spinning the new wave tunes.
