Dream girl Jesi the Elder, recently directed Final Fantasy's (aka Owen Pallett) music video for his song "The Butcher":
FYI: I first fell for Final Fantasy when I showed up very late for a first date to his concert, only to walk in on him closing his set with Mariah Carey's "Fantasy":

While I may skip Nuit Blanche this year in favour of Aurel Schmidt's opening at Deitch, I look forward to hearing your stories of how Scotiabank branding once again manages to overshadow an otherwise outstanding event. If I am still in town however, here's what I plan to go see:
ZONE A
Fifteen Seconds at Yonge and Dundas Square: Inspired by Andy Warhol's famous saying "In the future, everyone will be world-famous for fifteen minutes", find out for yourself what it's like to be in the spotlight.
Zombies in Condoland at College Park: Dress up as zombie and poke fun of the real zombies that probably live in the condos around College Park. Matt Sims being the exception, of course.
Conversation #2 at 900 Bay st.: An artist who's outgrown his building blocks, moves on to building with books.
Waterfall at Ontario Power Generation Building: Don't go chasing waterfalls because they're just garbage.
House of Leaves at the Ryerson University Student Centre: I wonder how many books were ruined to create this installation.
The 2008 Sobey Art Award Exhibition at the ROM: Best of luck to Terence Koh and his giant ball of oil.
ZONE B
Horroridor at Union Station: Scream your face off.
Draw-A-Thon From Dusk Till Drawn at Urbanspace Gallery: Self-explanatory.
ZONE C
Overflow at the Former Prison Chapel: This is what happens when you leave the water running.
SMASH! Droppin' Stuff at Parking lot at 60 Atlantic Avenue: Self-explanatory and very satisfying.
Fake ID at Trinity Bellwoods Park, Swizzle Studio: Relive your teenage rebellion.
Every Million Golden Universe at the Thrush Holmes Empire: Map out the universe with Toronto's hotshot artist Thrush Holmes.
Dyed Roots: the new emergence of culture at MOCCA: Explore modern ideas of culture and identity through an array of installation, sculpture and photographic works.
The Artillerist at Pixel Gallery: Make art with guns.
Design for the Other 90% at the OCAD Professional Gallery: Great design solutions for the poor, and me.
and of course...
Ndeur's woody and wearable exhibit at Omy Gallery.
Note. Whoever designed the Nuit Blanche website didn't consider someone may want to link to the individual installations.

The multi-talented Teki Latex is back in Toronto on Wednesday. In case you didn't know, Monsieur Latex is also a member of French hip-hop group TTC (of the poutine song fame) and co-founder of the independent record label Institubes (home to Midnight Juggernauts, Surkin, Curses!, David Rubato, and a whole lot of other bands you should know about). Clearly this man has exceptional taste in music, a quality that stands out both in his own music and his DJ sets. Some of my favorite Teki Latex tracks are:
Les Matins de Paris feat. Lio - Teki Latex
Disco Dance with You - Teki Latex
Go, Go, Go feat. Genevan Heaten - Teki Latex
Paris, Texas feat. Devin the Dude and Teki Latex - 33Hz
Les Jouets - Teki Latex
Teki also has great taste in art. For his first solo album Party De Plaisir (2007), Teki worked with the incredible French graphic artist Etienne Bardelli, a.k.a. Akroe on the creative campaign.
Gorgeous music video for "Les Matins de Paris":
P.S. TTC and Teki Latex was the very first Ourspace after-party in 2006! Oh, how time flies.
P.P.S. Props to Gabe Johnathan Schaumann Graham for the fun flyer for the event.

My favourite (Toronto) art collective, Team Macho is showing a new exhibit of paintings, drawings, and collage at Magic Pony from September 25th to October 26th. Opening reception with the artists in attendance will be held September 25th, 7-10pm.
According to Magic Pony,
" Kitschy, Gay, and Over in a Second resurrects beloved subjects with an expanded repertoire of oil, airbrush, resin, collage, lightboxes and typewriter art. Witty vignettes, hilariously inappropriate juxtapositions, inside jokes, détourned flea-market landscapes and subverted narratives collide. Dadaist nonsense, science fantasy, parallel universes, escape artistry, alchemic texts, homoerotic neon wizards, vintage catalogues and books on tape variously provide inspiration. Tragic mistakes are revisited with the return of creations Whiskeyboot and Leunbre. Lush treatments and a refined approach to materials provide insight into Team Macho's respect and affection for the seemingly absurd, perverse and tasteless worlds they create."
To see more of their work and my confession of love for them, click here.
Studio Gallery also has a few awesome (and affordable) limited edition prints by Team Macho members Stephen Appleby-Barr and Lauchie Reid. Give me a shout if you want to see them.

Electro divas Soulwax filmed their 2005-2007 world tour, including behind the scenes footage, and interviews at over 120 shows. Finished in April 2008, the film/documentary is entitled Part of the Weekend Never Dies, and also features musical acts such as James Murphy and Nancy Whang of LCD Soundsystem, Erol Alkan, Tiga, Justice, Busy P, So-Me, Peaches, Kitsuné (all 50 bands?), Klaxons, and Yolanda. The DVD should be out now-ish (September 2008). I'm not a big fan of tour documentaries, but the intro by Ed Banger's So Me is adorable:
Thanks to Asian Dan (you're the man!) for this.

The author Irvine Welsh, best known for his novel Trainspotting, is giving a reading from his new book Crime, at the York Quay Centre (235 Queens Quay W) on October 1st, 7:30pm. The reading will be followed by an onstage interview with Welsh. The evening is part of a series of events called Authors at Harbourfront Center.
Crime, "a thrilling journey into the bright glamour of the Sunshine State and a seething underworld of utter darkness", is based on the character Detective Inspector Ray Lennox from his earlier novel, Filth.
Tickets ($8) can be purchased here. I've bought two tickets already, and (Nerd Alert!) I'm looking for a reading buddy to (re-)read Filth with me in preparation for Crime.
FYI: Welsh is/was a house music DJ, promoter, and producer.
P.S. Welsh is planning to write a prequel to Trainspotting to be published in 2009.

I've decided to start an irregular but frequent post about new music that I'm suppose to like, that I may or may not in fact in like, and that you may or may not in fact like. According to who am I suppose to like this music? Friends, fellow DJs, music blogs, music pools, Last.fm, and subculture magazines like Tokion, Nylon, and Anthem. I'm just relaying the message. You decide for yourself. To give you a better idea of what the hell I am talking about, a past post about new music that I'm suppose to (and may or may not) like would include music by Santogold, The Black Kids, The Twelves, Kid Cudi, Steed Lord, and Danger. I am not recommending that you like these bands, I am just recommending that you check them out and decide for yourself if you like them (or not). Are you confused? Me too. On with the show.... Lismore (Italian pop / French pop / German pop ) Fan Death (no myspace description) Little Boots (Pop / Italian pop / Disco House ) Heartbreak (Electro / Italian pop / Powerpop ) Trouble Andrew (Crunk / Punk / Surf ) Pin Me Down (Pop / Electronica / Rock ) Autokratz (Electro / Indie / Melodramatic Popular Song ) The Shoes (Pop ) College (Electronica / Pop ) If you do like some of the bands I've posted, let me know. Market research.
