Current mood:  mischievous
Category: Music
Release #: FMR 27
Artist: Kris Wadsworth
Title: Hear Me Now
Track list:
1. Prayer For Detroit
2. Jazz Jack
3. Town House
4. That Groove

Kris Wadsworth is the young passionate Detroit producer some love to hate. Wadsworth is an unapologetic original; taking his time with slow burning arrangements that build from drips of rhythm into thick timeless sonic soundscapes. His brand of four on the floor is rough around the edges and burning hot in the center - just like Kris. With future work planned for UK mainstay NRK, he has been writing emotionally deep but psychically frantic house tracks for labels like Morris Audio, Dark Energy, Hypercolour, Adult Only, Poker Flat and our own Fresh Meat Records.

The story behind "Hear Me Now" is already legend at the Fresh Meat office. Kris finished the four tracks featured here right before his last European tour. He dropped the newly written tracks on a single CDR to test out on the road. In the UK, a scoundrel (or several of them) stole one of his bags at a gig, taking with it the laptop storing the original song files. Kris sent us his "as is" limited tunes. We promptly picked up all four gems and enlisted the help of our friend and genius mastering guru Shawn Joseph at Optimum Mastering for restoration. In short, what you have before you are four tracks of brilliantly written and meticulous music that were almost lost to the world. They will never be remixed.

"Hear Me Now" is quintessential Kris Wadsworth. There is the hypnotic "That Groove", the gritty cut-up "Jazz Jack", the faux ghetto-tech stomper "Prayer For Detroit" and the bouncy sample mangling "Town House." Each track takes the dancer in a different direction. "Prayer..." starts with a muted kick drum and a single oscillator blip. It takes time, but in true Wadsworth fashion, it organically builds into a pad laden Motor City warehouse epic. Both "Jazz Jack" and "Town House" are heavy with horns, piano and playful vocal snippets; the former keeping dry and focused on the samples that make up its groove while the latter veers off into a dreamy synth drenched escapade. "That Groove" is in part Kris' nod to Moritz von Oswald & Mark Ernestus' Basic Channel project. He has taken inspiration from their classics and added his own signature jump and unique sonic economy. In certain moments the track comes to complete silence, doing more for dance floor dynamics than any build up ever could. Its restraint and tact like this that makes Fresh Meat champion this rhythmic madman.

Release #: FMR 26
Artist: Nathan Drew Larsen, House Of Black Dress
Title: Gotahavejor Love Remixes
Track list:
1. Gotahavejor Love (Bearweasel Lazy Dub)
2. Gotahavejor Love (Bearweasel Reprise)
3. Gotahavejor Love (Wasted Chicago Youth Remix)
4. Gotahavejor Love (Wasted Chicago Youth Dub)

"Gotahavejor Love" is a raw house track by Chicago’s Nathan Drew Larsen. It was originally released on vinyl in 2005 under his House of Black Dress pseudonym as the b-side to Fresh Meat’s first release “No One to Care For”. The original was a wild patchwork of memorable organ, recorded objects, noise and vinyl samples including the righteous and infectious vocal round, “Got to have your touch babe 'cause dreamin’ ain’t enough babe....”

Bearweasel, the duo of Dean Mushin and Louisa Page, were requested for these 2009 remixes because they are brilliant at writing direct and fun 'tracky' house. Their output is body music in both the rhythmic and emotional sense. Dean and Lou, currently broadcasting from Staines, UK, get vibey with the vocal, while playfully reworking many of the original elements. The wicked Bearweasel Reprise indulges heavy dub techniques while their Lazy Dub focuses squarely on the dance floor.

Wasted Chicago Youth's Remix and instrumental Dub stay closer to the original version than most remixes, at least these days. Mazi (Audio Soul Project) and Justin Long (.Dotbleep) used the original multi-tracks as the starting point for their reinventions, including most of the gritty drums, keys, and strange recordings - such as melodies played on disassembled metal cages. They add their characteristic urgency to the track; writing a new bass line, new percussion and effects. Their precise engineering and arrangements are in keeping with other current WCY releases. The Wasted Chicago Youth Remix first appeared on the album When Bad People Cook Good Food (Volume 1). The Dub is exclusive here.

Release #: FMR 25
Artist: Adryan & Sandrino
Title: Behind The Fields
Track list:
1. The Deepest
2. The Deepest (Phonogenic Remix)
3. Dark Matter

Fresh Meat's 25th release makes good on the promise of family by returning to the burgeoning talent of our German compadres Adryan and Sandrino. For "Behind The Fields," the young producers create two slick deep house tracks that are a continuation of their cosmically influenced musical journey. For grit, we invite Tuomas 'Phonogenic' Salmela, fresh off his recent hit on Turbo Recordings, to serve up one of his signature reinterpretations.

This installment begins subtly with "The Deepest". As is their custom, Adryan and Sandrino arrange their opener with maximum restraint, building each musical part with elemental precision. Their music is categorically electronic with modulated wind effects, synthetic chord stabs and long sweeping pads, but the center is a warmly beating and throbbing heart of percussion and swing. Midway to the finish, echoed distorted guitar lines bring to mind the image of a space suited Carlos Santana jamming on the dust covered Lunar surface. To be sure this is dark music, but "The Deepest" is light on its feet by way of congas, analog hi-hats, shuffling shakers and disco inspired claps and snares.

For his remix of "The Deepest", Phonogenic takes original elements like the deep space sirens and the skippy filtered stabs and adds his own memorable wah-wah guitar, subsonic bass line and jackin' drum kit. With seeming ease Tuomas transforms the melancholy original into a head nodding prime time thumper. As he's achieved with past work on Cocoon and 20:20 Vision, here again, Tuomas teases out every bit of funk and hypnotic groove from the original music.

Third on the track list is this EP's most esoteric offering, "Dark Matter". Here Adryan and Sandrino travel into uncharted territory with a host of synthetic drum and percussion tones seemingly toying with how deep into the darkness they dare go. Hi pitch whistles and fluttering single oscillator drones mingle with lower-than-low tom and bass rumbles. Staccato keys seems to fall over each other landing miraculously in perfect swing relationships to the rhythm. The track's cavernous break down is followed with simple piano stabs rising first as blips from the groove, then opening up and leading the sonic charge into outer realms. Adryan and Sandrino unapologetically push current house music fashion, inventing a sonic tapestry which will intrigue heady listeners.

FEEDBACK:

Ivan Smagghe - Another 'old school' Phonogenic bomb.

Onionz - Great EP. Keep up the great work.

Paolo Mojo - Dark Matter is my choice here. A bit less immediate than other Fresh Meat releases but still good.

In Summer's twilight Fresh Meat bring you as fine a slab as we’ve had the opportunity to offer; Shenoda’s "Front Of Mind EP". Laurie Shenoda, a relative newcomer from Brighton and friend of the Bearweasel kidz, has recently released some lovely music on Hairy Claw, Hypercolour, and Sonido. His fresh humanistic approach is epitomized by the three bangin’ yet deep tunes featured here. Shenoda’s music is driving, made for the club and rooted in soulful house yet these new tracks are freely expressive and refreshingly creative. This contrast perhaps best defines Laurie’s infectious sound, and, of course, makes him a perfect addition to the Fresh Meat crew.

“Hussle,” the title track, is an unstoppable jammin’ tribal house tune with wonderful movement and sounds that tickle the ear. The track's mid-range percussion forms the foundation for the odd melodic groove, which to great effect, darts in and out of the composition, seeming to never stop.

For the remix, Fresh Meat bring back their latest find, Wiretappeur. Following-up on the wildly popular “I Want You,” Nils, Stel, and Florian turn in an undulating drummy remix of “Hussle” that is clearly made for the dance floor. With a percussive groove akin to the house classic “Damn Woman” by The Good Men, the Wiretappeur remix has the sweetest, most satisfying break heard in a long time.

The second original tune, “Rage” contains interesting contrasts between altered triggered voices, great housey drums, and a subliminal melodic groove. The track builds organically, with fluid breaks and several iterations of the same sequence culminating in an ecstatic passage around 4:32 where the funky plastic monotone bass and fluttering syncopated keys are finally allowed to take over.

“Too Much” is the most reductionist tune on the EP and is included especially for the track heads. This sexy groover features an interplay of loud strange dark voices (think early Murk), snappy side sticks and a deeper-than-the-ocean sub sonic bass line finished off finally with a great bound and gagged saxophone lick.

DJ FEEDBACK:

Kolombo - Hussle is amazing! Always in my case.

Johnny Fiasco - Wiretappeur remix is le poop, the shizzle and the shit!

The Timewriter - This is a fantastic release. The great Wiretappeur remix is my favorite here. Also the original of Hussle and the deep funky Rage have my full support.

Simon Baker - Nice release. Liking Hussle and the remix. Will support!

Luna City Express - Full support from my side. Rage is my favorite here.

Justin Long (dotbleep) - I could go into a huge story about how much I like this but sometimes less is more. Great release from front to back. House Nation!

Tres Manos (Justified Cause) - Too Much is very fun! Can't wait to kill this one tonight.

Bill Patrick - Hussle is a funk bomb. Sleazy as hell and will get spins for sure.

Audiofly - Wiretappeur remix for us.

Pete Dafeet - Another great release from Fresh Meat. Both mixes of Hussle are my faves, loving the drums!

DJ Yellow - Really cool release. My fave is the Wiretappeur remix.

C-Rock - Very nice release of this new talent.

Murray Richardson - Another solid release from Fresh Meat - plenty to choose from here and I'm heading straight for the original mix of Hussle!

Stacey Pullen - Real hot tracks! Like the percussion.

Luke Solomon - Killer! Full support.

Angel Alanis - Great track. Will use the Wiretappeur remix on my radio mix this week.

Art of Tones - Once again you guys at Fresh Meat never fail at bringing great house music with some swing, combining the best from yesterday's and today's sound. Hussle is massive and the Wiretappeur remix do justice to the original. Kudos!

Artist: Matthias Vogt
Title: Roofs / My Enchanted Basement
Track list:
1. Roofs
2. Roofs (Audio Soul Project Remix)
3. My Enchanted Basement
4. My Enchanted Basement (Nathan Drew Larsen Edit)

Who is Matthias Vogt? He is the founding member of deep house super group Motorcitysoul and an important artist in his own right.  As Motorcitysoul, Matthias and partner C-Rock have completed three full length albums, the latest entitled "Technique" for Simple Records, they have collaborated with house music legend Chez Damier, and they have remixed countless artists, with many underground hits among them.  For Matthias, and fortunately for all of us, his work as part of MCS is just the beginning.  He is a trained pianist having written four full length albums in the group re:jazz and two albums with his new band the Matthias Vogt Trio. He has been DJing since 1990 and currently holds a weekly residency at Frankfurt's Cocoon Club. Recently, he has been making waves as a solo artist and producer writing house and techno tracks for labels like Saw Recordings, Urbantorque, Prog City Deep and Polytone.

For his Fresh Meat debut, Matthias has invented two unique cuts bubbling with personality and melodic synth work. The EP opener, "Roofs," starts cleanly with an analogesque drum kit. A deep dark mono oscillator bass sets things off accompanied by playful percussion and completed by memorable chiming chords. As the cadence hops along the bass line awakens from it's filtered slumber and an extended atmospheric break down ensues, culminating into a surprisingly growling climax that returns eventually to the simple rhythm track. Matthias makes the circular journey sound natural and effortless.

"Roofs" comes complete with a remix by the mighty Audio Soul Project. The rendition is starkly different from the original, keeping only bits of percussion and the chord structure. In step with the recently released "Bit More Grit" EP, ASP turn in a back-to-roots house bumper, complete with funky acid, stacks of Rhodes piano, a deep as the ocean sub bass, a bedlam of Latin percussion and roaring Jupiter 8 stabs that hearken back to the hey day of KMS Records.  The vibes and midrange percussion also recall Audio Soul Project’s brilliant work from the early zeros for labels like Greyhound, NRK and Tango.

The second original track by Matthias is the hypnotic "My Enchanted Basement.” This time he fully exposes his roots in jazz and Chicago house, writing skippy swinging electronic chords complimented by soothing piano and subdued lead melodies. His drum programming is wisely sparse allowing the interplay of musical instruments to bloom.

With love in his heart, Nathan Drew Larsen, Fresh Meat's very own DJ Harvey, slices up "My Enchanted Basement" into a 10+ minute melodic but tracky edit, squeezing out every ounce of undulating ether. He extends many sections of the track, creating a chunky organic arrangement.  The playful splicing and interchanging of sections achieves a Summery hot march that should blaze on most discerning dance floors.

OUT NOW!

Release: FMR 22
Artist: Wiretappeur
Title: I Want You 8 Days A Week
Track list:
1. I Want You
2. 8 Days A Week
3. I Want You (Sandrino & Adryan Remix)
4. I Want You (Nathan Drew Larsen Edit)

For the latest Fresh Meat, we bring you Wiretappeur, a new group formed by Florian Kruse, Nils Nurnberg and Stelios Vassiloudis (aka Stel).  Individually, these artists have been busy releasing memorable music on imprints like 8bit, Dessous, Slip N Slide, Diynamic, Liebe Detail, OM, Dieb Audio, Urbantorque, Mood Music and Knee Deep Recordings. Their Wiretappeur collaboration is a Fresh Meat exclusive bringing their considerable talents together to create two original blissful, warm and timeless house cuts.

The lead track "I Want You" is a captivating 90s infused deep dance floor exploration. Wonderfully organic stabs and filtered chords meet the trio's modern day bravado for building drama. The shuffling drums and percussion float atop a surgically compressed kick and devastating subsonic bass line. Vocal snippets are peppered throughout the cut serving to judiciously build the tension. The first time we heard this track we knew it had to come out on Fresh Meat - it's that special mixture of feel good nostalgia and hands in the air modernism that we can’t resist.

"8 Days A Week", the EPs most hypnotic jaunt, treats us to sweet warm pads and top notch analog bumps with an arrangement that's all about the groove. Again using vocal cut-ups against syncopated keys and percussion, the track creates an early morning vibe as it undulates through each of its floating natural breaks.

The project rounds out with a remix and an edit of "I Want You" by Fresh Meat in house talents Sandrino, Adryan and Nathan Drew Larsen. Sandrino and Adryan put an atmospheric touch all over their rework adding more pads and cosmic effects and extending out the original parts. Nathan stays true to the Larry Levan ethos of the re-edit only using original audio and removing the big breakdowns for his re-invention.  Still he manages to transform "I Want You" into a 10 minute ode to the Golden Age of house music in the tradition of Black Wiz or Prescription Records.

Selected DJ FEEDBACK:

David Duriez - Excellent, makes me feel like getting back in the studio.

Marco Resmann (Phage, Luna City Express) - The original of I Want You is the one for me but all in all a pretty nice package. Full support!

Jay Tripwire - I like 8 Days A Week, simple and effective and tracky but with enough nuances that it doesn't sound unfinished like other people's loops that they try to pawn off as music.
