Now let's talk about your release this month...where did you get the idea for Christmas Diamonds?

The idea for CHRISTMAS DIAMONDS came into my head from a blues Christmas song that I grew up listening to my Dad play all the time. It was called, "Merry Christmas, Baby," by Charles Brown. At one point he sings, "Give me a diamond ring for Christmas, and I'll be living in paradise."

That phrase has stuck with me through the years. And so when trying to come up with a theme for my holiday novel, I thought to myself: "Wouldn't that be cool to have my protagonist fall for a dashing diamond jeweler?"

Thus, CHRISTMAS DIAMONDS was born.

Tell us about the Chase McCord. What makes him different from your other heroes? Are there any similarities - characteristics you like for all your heroes to have?

Chased McCord is definitely a ladies' man: cool, calm, collected, handsome, sexy, romantic, fit, funny, and the owner of a string of diamond stores.

How he differs from my other heroes is that he knows precisely what --or should I say who -- he wants and does not mind playing on his strengths and wealth to get it--or the lady.

As for similarities between my heroes, what they have in common is sheer masculinity, gripping sexuality, thorough attention to the woman's needs in and out of bed, and a willingness to go the extra mile at end of the day to capture the heroine's heart and soul.

Tell us about the Paula Devine. What characteristics does she have that makes her unique? Why is she the absolute perfect woman for Chase?

Paula Devine is the quintessential 21st century woman: gorgeous, successful (as an interior decorator), intellectual, self-confident, romantic, sexy, and unwilling to settle for less while still believing in happily ever after with her knight in shining armor.

Her  unique characteristics include an attention to detail, a willingness to try new things in and out of bed in pleasing her man, unwilling to give up on childhood fantasies as she tackles the ups and downs of adult life, and an undying devotion to her grandmother who raised Paula.

She is the absolute perfect woman for Chase because she gets him in ways  no one has before. And he gets her too, tapping into her heart and soul, making Paula believe that dreams really can come true in the face of reality. They are also a perfect match in bed, bringing each to new heights of ecstasy, keeping their romance on track to give way to all consuming passion and undivided love.

What was your favorite scene to write?

My favorite scene in CHRISTMAS DIAMONDS had to be when the heroine and hero traveled to the Diamond Capital of the World of Antwerp, Belgium for a romance filled getaway. It was a lot fun to bring these characters to such a wonderful setting that is generally outside of African-Americans element. I think it is great to have my heroes and heroines travel the world to discover new and romantic paradises beyond the norm, that in turn my readers can get to enjoy as well, and perhaps travel to visit someday.

What was the most difficult scene for you to write?

The most difficult scene to write in CHRISTMAS DIAMONDS was probably Chase's Christmas party, where I had to have a delicate blend of festive atmosphere, the expectation for a proposal or marriage, then an unforeseen set of circumstances that threatened to derail Chase and Paula's courtship and very future.

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in Christmas Diamonds?

Good question. Well, I love the finished product of CHRISTMAS DIAMONDS, so in that sense I wouldn't change a thing.

That said, if I stepped outside the box, I might have delved even further into Chase's diamond business, had Chase put in an addition to his house for Paula to decorate beautifully, and perhaps added a romantic trip to Paula's ancestral homeland of South Africa.

Is there an underlying theme to the story? If so, what inspired you to write a book using that theme?

The underlying theme to the story is that one truly can have it all in the world, even if the path to get there is sometimes full of potholes. If you are dedicated to the cause and refuse to let your dreams die, then the pot of diamonds at the end of the rainbow may well be yours for the taking.

My main inspiration was wanting to tug at the heartstrings of my audience with a passionate and pleasing romance to take them into a imaginative world where all things are possible.

I was also inspired by the love and joy of the Christmas season, my favorite time of the year. I wanted to bring this atmosphere into another romance novel, following in the footsteps of my previous holiday Kimani bestselling romance, CHRISTMAS HEAT.

Which is your most unforgettable character (excluding the book you're currently working on)?

My most unforgettable character would have to be Janine Henderson, the gorgeous mother and editor in my Harlequin Arabesque title, LOVE ONCE AGAIN. I loved everything about Janine and how she found her way into the world of prize winning photographer Richard Lowry, turning it upside down and winning his heart in the process.

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

My interesting writing quirk is always reading the previous chapter before writing the next one, to keep me in tune with the characters and storyline.

What genre are you most comfortable writing?

Another great question for someone who writes in multiple genres. I believe I am most at home writing the contemporary romance novel and this isn't an answer merely to fit the audience. What I love about writing romances is that I get to be myself as a true romantic in real life and bring that to readers who often hang on every word of a great romance novel.

As a male romance author, I enjoy being in the company of such other male romance novelists as Nicholas Sparks, Richard Paul Evans, and Eric Dickey, in lending my voice to an audience that cannot seem to get enough of well-developed love stories.

What's the one thing you would like your readers to know about you as a writer and as a person?

As a writer, I would like readers to know I live and breathe writing, truly dedicated to the task of mastering the craft and delivering great stories with three dimensional characters, remarkable settings, and undivided love that will stick with you long after finishing the book.

As a person, I want readers to know that I am truly blessed in having the love of my own life in my college sweetheart and now wife, Loraine. I am living my own dream of romance, true devotion, and happiness beyond my wildest dreams in a relationship. If I can impart just a fraction of that through my books, then I will have done my job effectively.

Any upcoming new releases or stories you are working on?

Indeed, I do have a number of upcoming releases to look forward to.

Next for me from Kimani Romance will be an ambitious miniseries called, PASSIONS IN PARADISE.

It will consist of three separate and unforgettable love stories that take place on different Hawaiian islands. First is BED, BREAKFAST AND A MAN, that is set in breathtaking Maui. Second is MY POLYNESIAN LOVER, that will take place on the rugged Big Island of Hawaii. The third book in series is, ISLAND CONQUEST, which will be on the picturesque island of Oahu, in Honolulu.

These romance tales will take advantage of the untold beauty of the Hawaiian islands and their individual charms, while presenting three dimensional characters, compelling plots, and hot romance as the heroines and heroes navigate their way into each other's hearts amidst the not always calm waters of the Pacific Ocean and golden sandy beaches where romance takes center stage.
More exciting news for Devon Vaughn Archer fans is that I will be branching out into mainstream fiction with the upcoming, THE SECRETS OF PARADISE BAY, set for a July 2010 release. Look for more details in the coming months on this and the PASSIONS IN PARADISE series, both of which promises to keep this prolific author busy for some time to come.

Now let’s talk about your release this month...where did you get the idea for Touch of Heaven?

I love stories about secret crushes and friends becoming lovers. So I decided to write a book about a woman who’d been secretly in love with her best friend’s big brother since childhood. I knew that he’d return her feelings someday, but I couldn’t make it easy for them to get together. So I threw an impossible obstacle in their path by having Warrick blame Raina for his sister’s incarceration.

Tell us about Warrick Mayne. What makes him different from your other heroes? Are there any similarities or characteristics you like for all your heroes to have?

Warrick is sexy, arrogant, generous, and fiercely loyal to his family. The way he carries himself takes “swagger” to a whole new level. He’s probably the cockiest hero I’ve ever created, LOL. But all of my heroes are strong, take-charge Alpha males, because that’s what I’m most attracted to. And when these guys fall for a woman, they fall hard. I think (hope) this is part of what makes my heroes irresistible to readers.

Tell us about Raina St. James. What characteristics does she have that make her unique? Why is she the absolute perfect woman for Warrick?

Raina is a loving, intelligent, strong-willed woman with a backbone. Although she has loved Warrick for years, she doesn’t let him run roughshod over her. She’s his equal in every way.

What was your favorite scene to write? What was the most difficult scene for you to write?

My favorite scene to write was the first kiss shared by Raina and Warrick. They were in a hot garage, Warrick was bare-chested and sweaty. Mmmm…steamy!

For me, the most difficult scene to write is always the dreaded “black moment” (the point in a romance novel where all appears to be lost for the hero and heroine). It’s always hard to make my couple exchange angry, hurtful words. When Raina believed that Warrick had betrayed her once again, I felt her pain and disillusionment. I also felt sorry for Warrick, because this time he’d done nothing wrong.

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in Touch of Heaven?

I don’t think so. I always strive to write the best book I possibly can. Once it’s published, I try not to agonize over scenes and passages that could have been written better. That’s just torture.

Is there an underlying theme to the story? If so, what inspired you to write a book using that theme?

The underlying theme is forgiveness, because Raina must learn to forgive Warrick and his family for the way they hurt and betrayed her in the past. I’ve always been a firm believer in the power of forgiveness, so I try to incorporate this theme into my novels whenever possible. The willingness to forgive others is the ultimate demonstration of love.

What is the toughest challenge you have faced as a writer?

Playing the waiting game! Waiting to receive an editor’s response on a proposal I’ve submitted. Waiting for the publication of a book I’ve slaved over for months. Waiting to receive an advance. Waiting, waiting, waiting…
How did it feel when you first saw one of your books in print?

It was an exhilarating thrill rush. As I held the published book in my hands, I felt a tremendous sense of pride and accomplishment.

What is the most useful writing advice you ever received? What advice do you have for aspiring authors from your personal experience?

The most useful writing advice I’ve ever received? Be true to your own voice. My advice to aspiring authors? Believe in yourself. If you really want to be published, and you’re doing everything you can to hone your writing, don’t let anything stand in your way!

What are you most passionate about?

Writing!

What’s the one thing you would like your readers to know about you as a writer and as a person?

I don’t know if this will endear me to my readers, but I have to confess that I’m somewhat neurotic. Every time I start a new book, I have to use a different font. I don’t know why; I just do. I also edit as I write, which is why it takes me so long to finish books. My obsessive-compulsive tendencies carry over into my personal life. For example, my husband laughs at me every time I straighten his hand towel in our bathroom (don’t worry, I’m not as crazy as the husband from “Sleeping with the Enemy,” LOL). Anyway, I like to think that my kooky quirks make me more lovable.
J

Will you allow us to follow in your footsteps for a moment? Describe a typical week in your life.

Aw, man, do I have to? There’s nothing glamorous about my life, LOL. The life of a writer can be very solitary. A typical day for me goes something like this: After seeing my husband and kids off to work and school in the morning, I head into my office and spend an hour reading my favorite political blogs (I’m a big news junkie). After that I respond to e-mails, do research for my book, work on promo stuff, etc. (I don’t get a lot of writing done on Mondays because my muse is still in weekend-relaxation mode. So I usually run errands, do grocery shopping, and meet friends for lunch on Mondays.)

Once my creative juices start flowing (around 9 a.m.), I typically write for 3-4 hours. If I need a mental break, I stop and have lunch. If I’ve hit my stride, I keep writing until my son gets home from school around 3:15. After we chat about his day, I help him with his homework, then return to writing. At 5 p.m., I call it quits to make dinner and pick up my daughter from volleyball practice (she has practice Monday through Wednesday; on Thursday nights, she has a game). Our family eats dinner between 6:30 – 7 p.m. Afterward, my husband and I like to unwind in the living room to talk about each other’s day, discuss what’s been in the news, and watch our favorite TV shows (Law & Order SVU, 24). The kids’ bedtime is 9:00. My hubby and I are usually in bed by 10:30 (in bed, not necessarily asleep—wink, wink J).

So there you have it. A typical day/week in the life of Maureen. Riveting stuff, huh? LOL.

What three things are on your “bucket list”? (The list of things you’d most like to do before you die).
    Visit Italy, France, and Africa
Make the New York Times bestseller list
    Learn how to swim

A Kimani Romance Daily Online Read

The Hollington physics professor is serious, scholarly, uptight—and obviously looking for a serious relationship. The last thing Renee wants is to settle down. What she wants is a bad boy, someone confident and spontaneous to cut loose with—no strings attached.

Adam has known that Renee is the complete package, the perfect woman for him, from the moment he first laid eyes on the new college registrar. Can he convince her that a long-term relationship with him would be anything but boring?

Current mood:  inquisitive
This month Kimani Press MySpace features a question of the month. The question came from one of our MySpace friends. Thank you, Keedy.

"How long did it take you to write your first novel? Was it hard or scary?"

Photobucket

It took me about a year to write my first book and it really was because I had a year.  When I received the call for Demetria Lucas at BET Books, I’d only written the first three chapters of CAPTURE THE SUNRISE.  I received my official CALL a few days before Christmas 2003 and the contract gave me until November 2004 to have it done.

It wasn’t difficult since I could take my time and write at my leisure.  But I was scared.  I’d signed a contract based on a synopsis and partial (three chapters) and wondered if I could actually reach the required 300 – 350 manuscript pages?  When I placed that manuscript in an envelope and posted it, I was relieved but didn’t breath until my editor told me she loved it!

Writing the first novel took about six months.  However, getting to that point took several years.  The desire to write and be a published author are easy to make.  Sitting down day after day, typing a 300-400 page book, after the excitement has faded, is tough.  Desire and discipline have to work hand-in-hand.  For six months, I had a schedule to write every day, or as close to a daily goal as possible.  I resisted too much hanging out with friends on the weekends.  Once I saw the pages accumulate, I was motivated to continue until I had a complete story.  That feeling of a finished work was fantastic.  Of course, selling that work was over the top.  I can still remember the phone call from the BET editor in 2002.

My first novel, Night Heat, took less than a year to write, if I remember correctly, and it wasn't hard at all, mainly because I only half-expected to actually get it published.  So for me it was a bit of a game, just doing something I always wanted to do: write a romance novel.  It's the later ones that are really scary, because now I know my publisher and my readers have certain expectations, and in the back of my mind I can hear a little voice saying, "This better be good!"

I began my first novel, Sealed With A Kiss, on January 2, 1994, finished it mid September of that year, and got a phone call from a Kensington Publishing Corp Editor on October 21st of that same year offering a two book contract. The book was published in September 1995.

Hmm.  I  played at writing my first novel for six or seven years, mainly because I wasn't writing for publication. Things didn't start getting hard and scary until after the manuscript was purchased and I had to write a "real" book.
Great question. B

It took me two months to write my first novel. It was neither hard nor scary. Instead I found it exciting and challenging to write a romance/mystery novel from beginning to end.

Brenda Jackson

It took me eight months to write my first novel because of the research I had to do.  For my first book (Tonight and Forever) I chose the setting of Ennis, Texas and worked with the Chambers of Commerce there to provide me with information about the city and surrounding areas.  I didn't think it was hard or scary.  I looked upon it as embarking on a new adventure.
