"it wasn’t long before Tarrbaby finished, to be replaced by a band who my sister thought sounded like The Killers.Rob Cowen & The Dissidents certainly had anthemic rock’n’roll songs suited perfectly for the best of any festival stage and were the first band to really get people up dancing and making new friends. Erin, my sister, was up at the front loving every minute of it. I felt a bit guilty leaving her to do all the dancing, after all, they were very good."Mint Music Review Festibelly 09. Read Full review.

The blasting mixmaster and new Rob Cowen & The Dissidents fan, Kissy Sell Out, bust out his brilliant remix of Heartache on his show on Friday (28th August).

Bigging up the band, Kissy said he loved the track and compared us with Arcade Fire, which is nice.

It was always going to be interesting to see which radio station would bust ROB COWEN & TEH DISSIDENTS debut single 'Heartache' out first and we are delighted to say that it is...Xfm.

John Hillcock played it on his Xposure show last night. What a great guy.

We love Xfm. And John.

Now, who is going to get that coverted silver...

“Excellent, creative and fully-fashioned songwriting” **** - Q Magazine

Rising epic-folk five-piece, ROB COWEN & THE DISSIDENTS release their outstanding debut single “Heartache" on the 28th September 2009.

Drawing comparisons with the likes of Arcade Fire, Springsteen and Elbow, the band creates swaggering rock ‘n’ roll songs of passion and hope, infectious tales of survival and social observation that come straight from this country's heartlands.

A firm fan favourite during the band’s powerful live performances, ‘Heartache’ already sounds like a classic – timeless, yet absolutely of its time. From the start of the driving drum intro, we are thrown into a hook-laden mini-epic that flows like a river in flood, held together by Yorkshire-born singer/songwriter Rob Cowen's impassioned vocals.

In a world-obsessed with the fashionable and fickle, the song stands out with its mixture of steering-wheel-smashing beat, emotional honesty and poetic story: ‘Everybody knows this feeling never goes and all the silhouettes in the windows look like you. And I’ve been working late on the industrial estate and I need a little rescue.’ Small wonder ‘Q’ Magazine has hailed Rob’s lyrics as being ‘worthy of John Betjeman’.

The single also features an exclusive and exquisite stripped back version of ‘Alice In Sunderland’, showcasing the breadth of the band’s sound with its Nick Drake-like guitar and the heartbreaking real-life story of teenage drug addiction in the industrial wastelands. Close friends and electro-wizards James Yuill and Bright Light Bright Light also provide stunning remixes of the title track.

The full tracklisting for Heartache is as follows:

  1. Heartache
  2. Alice In Sunderland (Exclusive Acoustic Version)
  3. Heartache (James Yuill Remix)
  4. Heartache (Bright Light Bright Light Remix)
