Hi all,

So the purpose of this post is twofold. One, I want to post the lyrics to the song that will appear on the Tornavalanche split 7" that is coming out... eventually. Two, I want answer the question posed to me recently by a classmate, referenced in the subject line.

1st) "Everything Explicit". We wrote this tune in some form or another probably about 2 years ago and played all across the US this past summer. However, it didn't really have words until fairly recently. Not to discourage individual interpretations, I'll keep my explanation brief and vague: the problem with getting closure after someone is gone is that the words and ideas in your head that you wanted the departed to receive will never get to where you need them to be to accomplish what you need of them. It's like electricity; if the connection is broken, there can be no flow.

EVERYTHING EXPLICIT

What's best left unsaid?
A speaker spent, a listener left with regrets in his stead.
In a life of loss, silence can cost you more than you expect.
Held tongues relate a bitter taste when prone to reminisce.
Anamnestic; recipient absent, the circuit's dead.
We live these linear lives unidirectional, towards an inevitable end.
We must make everything explicit.
Thats how we left it: unsaid.
Im at a loss for words.

2nd) So what's up with Off Minor. Unfortunately, not a whole lot. We had summer tour plans to go to Australia that I personally had to tank because of an extremely crucial, 10-hour long, future-determining medical liscensing exam I have to take before the end of June. Fucking it up will guarantee I will only work in the hottest, loudest and smelliest hospitals in countries that Noam Chomsky writes books about, lancing taut, throbbing abscesses on the grundles of convicted war criminals. But we're still in it. The split 7" with Tornavalanche is almost done, it's release is imminent. We may even play a show or two before 2006 is through. Anyone booking any shows anywhere on Earth, please write us and ask if we can do it. I can tell you right now that we can't; Steve's recording every band in Philadelphia that day, Kevin has another 9,863,453,987 pages to write for his senior project and I'm pretty sure that I'm on-call that night and every other night for the next six years. But we really do appreciate the acknowledgement that we still exist and that you love us.

- Jamie

apologies to the many, many bands i've forgot

Saturday, February 11, 2006

Hey all,

I remember a while back, a certain band member of a band I was in was having a conversation with a certain band member of another band about lyrics. The topic: to revise or not revise. Does revision dull the passion of the initial expression of a thought, the raw emotion of it? Or are those qualities refined by revision?

I have to say that I agree with my former bandmate: revision is crucial. After all, lyrics are not just spur of the moment outbursts, whatever just happens to fly out of our mouthes at any given time. And besides, I always thought that the lyrics of this band (to remain nameless) kinda totally blew.

In that spirit, I have continued work on the lyrics I had shared in the previous blog (ugh, blog....) and I would again appreciate any feedback.

For one thing, the title has been downsized to "Abattoir". It's pretty blunt, I know. Just lays it all out for everyone to see. But I believe that "political" lyrics require a certain amount of transparency, one of the few cases that subjective interpretation is, shall we say, less welcome. Anyway, here they are.

ABATTOIR
the roots of cruelty lie in
an inability to see
our visceral realities.
our everyday atrocities
by any other name, it still seems as obscene to say:
"mine are not in the abattoir, neither poor nor dying in the war, so I am unconcerned"
when will the world see things this way?
perverse perspectives still pervade.
we're left cold by blood that's lost.
it cries out from the ground.

I feel like the meter is more concrete and managable now. Also, it feels more like verse rather than prose. Trying to fit what I had before to music was difficult, but these lyrics have been much easier to work with. But I'd hate to think the changes are purely practical; I genuinely like these lyrics better. And it's also more concise (70 words, 313 characters vs 80 words, 365 characters). Hardcore rule #1: shorter is better.

Lay it on me, people.

Well, as I mentioned in our very first blog, we were asked by a very good friend of ours to be on a compilation that will be a benefit for a local animal rights group. I am being fuzzy with the details because I'm not certain if it's my place to spill the beans on all this. But anyway, it took me a while but I finally have produced something I am happy with.

IN THE ABATTOIR
This is where it begins, with an inability to see the visceral realities of our everyday atrocities (atrocities by other names would still seem so obscene).
"Mine are not in the abattoir, neither poor nor dying in the war, so it’s no concern of mine"
Words so perverse and pervasive, even for a species of such cavalierly character, left cold by all the blood we’ve shed. It cries out from the ground: "When will the world see things this way"

I got to thinking that the link between animal rights and human rights lies in ones inability to ignore the suffering of others. We've become desensitized to suffering in general, both animal suffering and human suffering. And it's especially easy to be numb to the suffering of animals because they're not us. We are never prey (except on "When Animals Attack" TV shows and zombie movies), everything else is our prey. Like the "food chain" Troy McClure demonstrates: everything goes into our collective mouth. So when a defensive omnivore talks about "nature", this person doesn't realize that we're not part of nature anymore. We have put ourselves above nature. Nature is whats going on next to our highways, occasionally making attempts to cross them and becoming roadkill. And anyone who knows anything about modern industrialized "farming" knows there's nothing natural about it. So the justification that meat is "natural" is bullshit.
But as I was saying pre-tirade, my thesis is that suffering is easy to ignore when it's not us. Hey, it's not our families who are getting bombed in Iraq. It's not our children who are sick and dying because they don't have access to healthcare. It's not us in the abattoir being slaughtered for someone elses dinner. Of course, killing and dying are a part of life, a part of the natural world. But I don't think anyone would debate that humankind inflicts it upon others and ourselves to such an extent that it's grotesque. And largely unnecessary too.
But can we change? Well, I say hell yeah we can change. Look at history; in a lot of ways we're getting better all the time. For example, slavery was an intrinsic part of human history up until pretty recently. Then, as a species we finally made the realization that it was an appalling practice and put an end to it once and for all (well, who knows what the present administration has in store, but in general...). I believe that someday, we'll all feel the same way about animals, that every other form of life is not here on this planet for our use and abuse.

And so, I submit this for your collective approval. Please leave comments and criticism. I'm posting this because I want your feedback.
Thanks!

In preparation for the possibility of Off Minor actually playing a show sometime in the not-too-distant future and keeping with the spirit of this site as a means of creating a open, albeit limited, dialogue between us and the collective you, I have made this poll.

Hell, it beats studying autonomics.

Pick an Off Minor song. We'll try to play it out.
You may have noticed there are some omissions from our catalog. Well, some of our songs have been forever retired for various reasons. Generally it's because they're boring and/or we've forgotten how to play them. Also freeblogpoll.com only allows a maximum of 20 answers.

Off Minor subjects itself to your will.
What Off Minor song would you like to see us play live?
The Problematic Courtship (split w/ I am the Resurrection)
Farewell, Ne`er-do-well (split w/ I am the Resurrection)
Perfect Strangers (split w/ I am the Resurrection)
The Heat Death of the Universe (The Heat Death of the Universe LP)
This is a Hostage Situation (The Heat Death of the Universe LP)
Punch for Punch (The Heat Death of the Universe LP)
The Transient (The Heat Death of the Universe LP)
Staring Down the Barrel of Limited Options (The Heat Death of the Universe LP, Innominate CD, LDC split 7 inch, maybe another split or two....)
Spartan (The Heat Death of the Universe LP)
Monday Morning Quarterbacks (The Heat Death of the Universe LP)
Cadaveric (Innominate LP)
Killed For Less (Innominate LP)
Inadequate In Absence of You (Innominate LP)

For me, writing lyrics is tough. Generally it comes in bursts at weird times of day and weird periods of my life. The rest of the time I'm trying to grab hold of what little hair I have to pull out trying to squeeze somewhat meaningful and coherent words out of my brain. Around 3:30 AM yesterday morning, I finally managed to take two lines I had written about a year ago and finish the thought. And so I share them with you, the 146 people who have looked at this blog over the past month. These are Off Minor lyrics. They just don't know it yet. I am making a point of not offering an explanation, which I have in the past been known to do. If anyone wants to offer their interpetation, it is welcome.

SOME BLOOD

this fluid is confined to single file lines.

this life is allogenic

and its ruddy hues remind me that

you’re in me but not of me,

from origins unknown.

in me but not of me,

your gift in anonymity draws

questions of identity.

the heterogeneity of me

and you, what separates us now becomes obscure.

diffusely lost in me, you still endure.

I would like to encourage you all to join our Frapper group. What is Frapper? More internet crap to waste your time with. But you don't have to subscribe to it and it'll help you bone up on your world geography.

Well, it seems that I, who had previously been the sole myspace hold-out, have fallen the hardest, as evidenced by being the first Off Minor blogger. Oh well.

Today was a monumental occasion: the first Off Minor practice since June 25th, over 4 months. I am delighted to say that it was very productive. We managed to bang out the bare bones of a new song, clocking in at about 1:35. Punk rock. The song is tentatively slated to appear on a compilation, the details of which I am not sure I am free to disclose. However, I am comfortable sharing that this will be a song advocating a vegan lifestyle. Yes, all three of us are (still) vegan. As the lyrics come together, maybe I'll post them for feedback. Or not. The lyrical concept is based on my belief that someday the value of animal rights will be so apparent to the entire human race that we will collectively look back on a history of animal abuse with horror and disgust. Absurdly idealistic? Probably. But let us all keep in mind that the notion that our fellow human beings have certain fundamental and inalienable rights is only a fairly recent concept, and one still not yet universally embraced either. So yeah, we're getting there, albeit slowly. But I have faith. Inside this sour cynic coating lies a core of creamy humanism.
