Hello all,
First of all, we caved and got a Twitter. Please follow us! http://twitter.com/coolhandmusic

As 2009 comes to a close and we slowly get over the disappointment of realizing that we won’t all be flying around in space ships in 2010 like we had previously thought, I’m thinking about playing shows. Hopefully lots and lots of shows. But here’s the thing: I don’t have a label, a manager, a booking agent, etc.

What I do have is an incredibly devoted wife who helps me tremendously, and I have you. If you would like to see/hear me play/speak in 2010, please contact us at bookcoolhandluke@gmail.com  

If you’ve seen me play this year, you know that a lot of what I do is not only play Cool Hand Luke songs, but tell the stories behind the songs and talk about the things that God is teaching me. So, this would work well in your church, your coffee shop, your college, or even your house. I will be booking shows as “Mark Nicks of Cool Hand Luke” and it will consist of me, my piano, and (when you’re lucky) my wife Brandy playing along with me. I would love to come and play for you or even just speak. God is teaching me lots of good things about the intersection of faith and the arts, and I would be keen to talk about that in just about any setting.
 


In other news, I will be releasing a live album shortly. It was recorded in Nashville just a few weeks ago by Konrad Snyder. It will be mixed and finished very soon and I will be working on getting CD’s pressed and available for purchase. I’ll let you know when I figure out dates and whatnot. I’m also still in the middle of recording new material.

Here are the FAQ’s I’ve been receiving regarding the things I’m working on:
1. Is it just piano or full band?
2. What’s it going to be called?
3. What does it sound like?

Here are my answers:
1. It is full band. I am getting different friends to play on it and I’m playing piano and drums and singing.
2. I’m not sure. I will probably not call the new records Cool Hand Luke, but I’m still figuring that out. I’m also not sure if I will have a band or go it alone when I play the new songs.
3. It’s all over the board. I’m working on a concept record that roughly covers the Passion. It sometimes sounds like the darker moments of Cool Hand Luke with some new elements. Some of the new songs that aren’t for the concept record sound like a continuation of what happened on The Sleeping House and some of them are quite different. I’m trying not to limit myself to what is expected from a Cool Hand Luke song, but then again, I wrote Cool Hand Luke songs so it will still sound like that to some degree. I just started recording a song that makes me nod my head and tap my foot. Sometimes I even shake my hips a bit. (You’ll never see that part, though.) I’m just listening to God and trying to imitate what I hear with the few tools that I have. It’s a slow process because of work and all that, but it’s been rewarding so far. I’ll let you hear something I did soon. For real.

Hello, again. We have lots to discuss, so I’ll get right down to it. Some of you have asked if Cool Hand Luke is over and if I’m done with music. There is no band so to speak. For the past year I’ve been playing as Cool Hand Luke, but the shows have mostly been just me playing Cool Hand Luke songs on piano. I will not go by the Cool Hand Luke moniker too much longer, but for now I’ll continue to do that. I’m definitely not done with music.


I’ve been taking a break from shows so that I can focus on writing and recording the 47 different records that I seem to be working on. However, there are a few shows coming up and a few in the works. At long last, there are a couple of Texas shows. It’s been far too long since Cool Hand Luke played Texas, and I’m excited to get back and spend some time in the land of Whataburger and oil. Those shows are coming up in just a couple of weeks, and I think they are really going to be special. There will also be a show in December with Derek Webb and Matthew Mayfield in Nashville.

A CHL DOCUMENTARY — We need your help!

Our friend Thomas Irby in Panama City is beginning work on a documentary film about Cool Hand Luke. But he needs help because we don’t have a tremendous amount of footage of the band. If you do, here’s your chance to dust off your VCR and relive those magic moments. We’re hoping to get rolling on this soon, so if you have some footage of Cool Hand Luke shows or interviews from any time period please send it our way and you will be credited. Here’s the info:

We will accept VHS tapes. However, please use your judgment about whether or not the footage is usable. If you want to share your VHS videos, but don't trust us to take care of them, you can get them converted to a digital format. You can get this done at most local video production companies. We will accept the following digital video file types: .mpg .mov .avi

We will accept digital video files on a data DVD or through YouSendIt.com. Send emails about contributing video to coolhandlukevideo@gmail.com

 

 


RECORDING

So, I’ve been writing and recording. It’s a slow process because I’ve also been working full-time and enjoying life with my wife. It’s coming along though. I’ve spent some time in Atlanta and in Nashville recording with different friends. I’m going to keep doing that every chance I can get. When I get a song mixed, I’ll play you something so you can hear it. Also, on November 6, I will be recording a live set in Nashville. I plan on releasing it sometime shortly after that since so many of you have asked for some of the piano versions of CHL songs. I'll give you more details about it soon.

A REUNION?

As some of you know, Brandon and Jason (my two friends who started Cool Hand Luke with me back in the day) played with me in Louisville a few months back. Ever since there have been rumors swirling around that we are going to reunite. All I can say is that we’ve talked about it and there is a good possibility that it will happen. Seeing as how we are all adults with adult responsibilities and we don’t live in the same city anymore, it would prove difficult logistically. I mean, it’s not like we’re Sunny Day Real Estate and we can just throw a tour together out of nowhere and sell out every show. If it were that simple, the answer would be yes. So, you tell us what you think. What would your interest in this be? Can we make it worthwhile? I’m curious to know if anyone still remembers those good ole days.

2009 marks the 10th anniversary of Cool Hand Luke’s self-released ep, “so far…” To commemorate the occasion, you can now download “so far…” and the self-released full-length “I Fought Against Myself” for the first time ever. Both of these albums have been out of print for several years now, but you can get your very own digital copies at iTunes and other online digital retailers. We’re excited that these old records are finally available again, and I’m sorry it has taken so long. My fondest memories of Cool Hand Luke are from this era of the band.

Kind thanks to all of you who have been at the shows over the past month or so. I can scarcely remember a time that I have felt more loved and encouraged by the people I have had the privilege of playing for. I am now shifting gears and beginning to focus on writing, but there are a few more shows coming up. I’d love to see you at one.

If you get the chance to come to the Louisville show on Friday, you are in for something special. The three original members of Cool Hand Luke will play together for the first time in over six years (Jason Hammil-guitar, Brandon Morgan-bass, and me-piano/maybe drums/singing/talking). It will be explosive. Probably not explosive. But it will be fun and special to at least three people. I hope you can join us.

Hello friends,
I hope you are all having a great summer so far. Next week, I’ll be playing several dates in Florida. It’s been a while since Cool Hand Luke has been to some of these cities, so I look forward to seeing a lot of you again.

My wife and I are looking for a place to stay in Jacksonville June 21 and 22. If any of you can help, please email bookcoolhandluke@gmail.com.

The following week I’ll be heading up to Cornerstone. This will be my eleventh Cornerstone with Cool Hand Luke. I want you all to know that this will be the last time Cool Hand Luke plays at Cornerstone. It’s the only festival date that Cool Hand Luke is playing this year. I will be speaking at the Jesus Village Stage Friday, July 3rd. I think it is at 1pm. Then that night at 11pm on the Jesus Village Stage will be Cool Hand Luke’s final Cornerstone performance.

I hope a lot of you can make it to the festival. I’d love to talk to you and trade stories. I know times are hard and money is tight. For those of you who can’t make it to the festival, I’m hoping to still make it out to some of your cities before the year is up. This will most likely be CHL's last year. In the meantime, I continue to write and record when time allows. It’s still too soon to project when anything will be finished, but I’ll try put a song or two up for you to hear as I finish them.

Hi there,
I have played a few shows and it has been great so far. There are more shows coming up in May, and I will be speaking and playing at Cornerstone in July.

Cool Hand Luke is booking dates for the summer and fall, and we could use your help. If you would be interested in having me play and/or speak, send an e-mail to bookcoolhandluke@gmail.com. 

I am busy writing, recording, working, Bible-studying, and husbanding. All of these are very time-consuming and fulfilling. The weather is finally warm and the birds are singing. The season of Lent is past and we have celebrated our Savior’s resurrection. Despite the economy and the sin that so easily entangles us, I truly believe life is good. Our God is sovereign and mighty to save. He has only ever taught us and drawn us to Himself through our struggles. This is a blessing indeed. You and I are blessed beyond anything we can understand.  I hope you’ll stop and think about that.

Some of you have asked if you can give to Cool Hand Luke.  I am not asking you to give but if you feel that you should, we have set up a PayPal account where you can donate.  I thank you so much for the prayers and encouragement I have received over the past couple of months.
