Wednesday night (Nov.11) I was fortunate to be able to attend the 43rd annual CMA Awards here in ....Nashville....! There were so many great performances and acceptance speeches, and I’ve put together some highlights from the evening:
When we first arrived, the boys of Love and Theft were handing out the awards that were not shown during the live broadcast. These included video of the year won by Taylor Swift for “Love Story” and musical event of the year won by Brad Paisley with Keith Urban for “Start a Band”.
My personal favorite, Miranda Lambert, rocked with her latest single, “White Liar." I love the video for this one and seeing it performed live just added to my love and appreciation for the sweet and sassy song.
Zac Brown Band blew me away with “The Devil Went Down to ....Georgia.".... The entire band came together perfectly to really rock and bring their own flavor to the classic.
Who doesn’t love George Strait! His performance of “Twang” was wonderful and being able to see him perform not once but TWICE during the awards was a real treat.
Lady Antebellum’s performance of “Need You Now” really gave me a better appreciation for their harmonic abilities, and I’ll definitely be listening to more of their music from now on. They definitely earned their wins for vocal group (ending Racal Flatts’ six-year dominance in this category) and single of the year.
Darius Rucker’s acceptance speech for best new artist was my favorite. It’s never easy for an artist to cross over into different genres, especially when they are a rock staple like Hootie & the Blowfish. He was so appreciative to the fans, and it really made me happy to see him win.
Carrie Underwood’s “Cowboy Casanova” gave off a very Britney feeling with the costumes and backup dancers, but I do love the song.
During commercial breaks, videos of ‘60s – ‘70s television performances by artists like Waylon Jennings, Barbara Mandrell, Willie Nelson and Conway Twitty played on huge monitors. I loved the contrast between these classic clips featuring over teased hair, powder blue tuxedos and retro stage sets against the sleek and modern stage production going on below.
I was so excited to be able to see Brooks & Dunn perform together before they are no longer , and the addition of ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons really added to the show when they played “Honky Tonk Stomp”. Definitely a crowd pleaser.
Taylor Swift’s performance of “Fifteen” on the floor surrounded by adoring fans and then her win of all the categories she was nominated for definitely created the feeling this was her night. Her stellar performance and wins last night further confirmed that 2009 was her year. Can’t wait to see what she has in store for 2010.
After a great tribute to Barbara Mandrell, Martina McBride sang “I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool,” joined in the end by ....George.. ..Strait...., bringing an element of classic country style to the show.
The final performance of the night by Kenny Chesney and Dave Matthews for “I’m Alive” was a fitting finale with country staple Chesney partnering with rock staple Matthews for a song appealing to all audiences. It really brought together the feeling of artist/genre collaboration that I got from the night.
Throughout the night there was a great mix of classic country and modern country. I’ve heard and read people saying that modern country is taking a turn toward being “too poppy” but I see it as progression. Music and its many forms are never stagnant. The creativity of the artists we love brings new elements and borrows from other genres. Modern country can take us in many directions and that’s what is so great about it. The performance at the CMAs brought it all together in a celebration of country music, its roots and new directions.

Even though Big New Music Weekend turned out to be a success, CMT still felt a little guilty for leaving all you Taylor Swift fans out to dry. So, in order to make up for it, we have decided to dedicate an entire weekend to Taylor. It all kicks off tomorrow (Oct. 9) when we world premiere her new video for the fourth single off her Fearless album, “Fifteen,” at 7 a.m. ET on CMT.com. The video will then exclusively premiere on CMT at 8 a.m. ET in the 90-minute special, CMT Fifteen Swiftly-Made Videos. The special includes a chronological look back at Swift’s entire music video catalog, as well as live performances from Studio 330 Sessions and CMT Crossroads: Def Leppard and Taylor Swift and concludes with the world premiere of “Fifteen.” But wait, there’s more! In addition to the CMT Swiftly-Made Videos, we’re also debuting a 15-minute special tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. ET called Taylor Swift-Fifteen. It includes exclusive interview footage with Swift, an announcement concerning her tour, details on how to win a chance to see the country star live in concert and, of course, the new video. The special will also be available on CMT.com, CMT Mobile and CMT Pure, the network’s 24-hour music channel. Both specials will run throughout the weekend on CMT, so if you miss them the first time around, there will plenty of chances to get your Taylor fix. Go to CMT.com/shows or check your local listings for show times. If you absolutely cannot wait until tomorrow for all the Taylor you can handle, here’s a list of “15 Facts about Taylor” that will hopefully hold you over:
1. Taylor loves being organized and loves to have meetings that “insure organization,” especially when she’s getting ready to go on tour.
2. Taylor feels like she’s better off wearing dresses and has even once worn a dress every day for three weeks. 3. Taylor graduated from Aaron Academy in Hendersonville, Tenn. in 2008.
4. Taylor is the youngest guest to be on Saturday Night Live.
5. Taylor is good friends with Kellie Pickler and Miley Cyrus.
6. Taylor visited 53 cities in six months during her Fearless tour.
7. The first thing Taylor did on her 18th birthday was register to vote.
8. Taylor’s first kiss was when she was 15.
9. Taylor’s favorite color is white, and her favorite food is cheesecake.
10. If Taylor wasn’t a singer, she would be a forensic detective and she says she has watched all of the episodes of CSI.
11. Taylor’s favorite number is 13.
12. Taylor loves to drive fast.
13. Taylor is 5’11.’’
14. When Taylor was 11 she sang the national anthem at a Philadelphia 76ers game.
15. Taylor used to practice the guitar until her fingers bled.

So, here’s the deal. Unless you’ve been living under a rock the last few weeks or you’re one those die-hard Taylor Swift fans that has done nothing but spend every waking hour of the day since the VMAs blogging about “death to Kanye,” then you’ve heard about CMT’s Big New Music Weekend starting this Friday (Oct. 2) on CMT and CMT.com. And if you haven’t, then you’re obviously not a true country music fan. Kidding! Don’t hurt me (I know, those are fightin’ words -- especially in this town.). But seriously, if you haven’t heard the buzz about CMT’s Big New Music Weekend, then it’s time to get schooled my friends. I’m just messin’ with ya! CMT knows which artists country fans can’t get enough of, which is why we are premiering nine (that’s right, nine) exclusive world premiere videos from Carrie, Tim, Kenny, Keith, Sugarland, Reba, Miranda Lambert, Billy Currington and Michelle Branch together, jam-packed into one weekend -- Big New Music Weekend, that is. It all kicks off this Friday (Oct. 2) and the Big New Music won’t stop till the cows come home (in which case they’ll be home Sunday around midnight since it is Big New Music Weekend, but that’s beside the point). Anyway, “How were we able to pull this off?” you ask. I could tell you, but I’d have to kill you. Let’s just say we closed the deal with Miranda as soon as we told her Blake promised to give up tweeting if she’d deliver the goods. Can’t believe she bought it -- oldest trick in the book. Nonetheless, it doesn’t matter how we bribed, I mean, persuaded these artists into being a part of Big New Music Weekend. All that matters is that we’re making it happen and we don’t want you to miss a moment. In the spirit of Big New Music Weekend, I’ve decided to compile a list of nine songs, or as I like to call it, a list of “Big not-so-New Music,” that aided in helping our Big New Music artists rise to stardom and become prime candidates for Big New Music Weekend:
If you’d like to join me in preparing for this weekend and want to get in the Big New Music mood, you can go to CMT.com now and watch the videos for all of the songs on my list and check out the latest in music, news, photos, lyrics and lots more from all of our Big New Music Weekend artists. Now that you’re all caught up and in the know about the biggest, newest music event ever (OK, maybe not ever, but I’d say biggest of the fall and definitely of the weekend), there’s no excuse for missing out. And that goes for you T-Swift fans, too. Trust me -- Big New Music Weekend is worth prying yourself away from the Kanye voo-doo doll collection for a few days. It’ll be good for you. All the cool kids are doing it.
So, one last time -- Big New Music Weekend this Friday - Sunday (Oct. 2-4), nine exclusive world premiere videos only on CMT and CMT.com.

By: Elisabeth Hayes Do you remember Michelle Branch’s catchy song “Everywhere”? It was one of those songs that everyone was singing along to it every time it played on the radio. This was one of several radio hits off her album The Spirit Room that was released in 2001. Several other great songs from that album include “Goodbye to You” and “All You Wanted.” Michelle released another album in 2003 called Hotel Paper before she decided to join forces with Jessica Harp in the country music business in ....Nashville..... The duo became known as the Wreckers. Now, Michelle Branch has just released her single, “Sooner or Later” on Monday (July 20) to CMT, which is from her country album that will be released soon. It seems to me this artist has had so many different acts in the music business, but what is even more incredible is she has been successful both as a solo artist and as a member of a group. I must say that after I listened to her new country single, I have never been more certain that she fits perfectly into the country world as a soloist. I hope she is here to stay, and I cannot wait to here more of her country album. ..

By: Elisabeth Hayes Yesterday was the kickoff of Music City Madness. This year, four artists have been asked to help the 64 chosen contestants throughout the singer-songwriter competition. I am very excited about the selection of these four artists. They are Jack Ingram, Jewel, Jimmy Wayne and Justin Moore. All of these artists have such different backgrounds. For example, I remember when I was a little girl and listened to many of Jewel’s older hit songs, including "You Were Meant for Me." I believe Jewel will be a great asset because she was not always in the country music business, so she will be able to offer different insights. As I was reading more about Music City Madness, I watched the video of Reba giving advice to those who will be entering their music video into the competition. Two pieces of advice really stood out to me. Reba explained that when she was discovered her manager said to write every day. The other piece of advice explained that a good music video has lots of depth. I have seen this connection in many country songs. Many top hits have been written by the singer and have had a deep or heartfelt meaning. It makes country fans feel like they have some kind of connection to the singer. After researching about this year’s Music City Madness, I am looking forward to seeing all of the videos talented people across the country will submit. Hopefully, the 78 days left of video submission will go by rather quickly. To all of you who are thinking about submitting a video, good luck! I will be intensely tuned in to watch when the competition begins.

By: Elisabeth Hayes It has been about two weeks since Whitney Duncan’s video " Skinny Dippin’," has premiered, so I decided to watch the video completely for my first time. The name of the video is what actually intrigued me. What was this video going to illustrate? Was it going to be raunchy or would it be done tastefully? To my surprise, I really enjoyed watching the video. Personally, I am a conservative person, and this video proved to be classy. It also reminded me of a typical summer day at a Tennessee lake where I have vacationed for many summers. The hot sun and refreshing water can tend to make you want to be "exposed" while swimming. So, if you want to watch a great summer music video, then I highly suggest that you watch this one.

As the CMA
Music Festival is coming to an end here in Nashville, I wanted to give those of you who
were not able to attend more updates from the past two days. I started off
Day Two with seeing some great live daytime shows here in Music City.
Love and Theft, Craig Morgan and Eric Church were among some of the performers
that rocked out the stages Friday afternoon but my favorite performance of the
day would have to be newcomer David Nail. Granted in the past few weeks I’ve
become infatuated with his first single, “Red Light,” I did not fully expect to
be blown away by him on stage. However, his stage presence and impressive
vocals show some definite long-term potential. Later, I headed back to another
intimate press conference with the LP Field night performers. Lady Antebellum, Rodney
Atkins and Jason Aldean were a few of artists there to answer questions from
the press. With his dry wit and bubbly personality, Jake Owen stood out from
the rest of the country stars as someone you could just hang out with on a
Saturday afternoon. I was fortunate enough to be able to see some of the show
as well later that evening. Thousands of fans rocked out to the Zac Brown Band,
Little Big Town, Rodney Atkins and Kid Rock. With his irresistible lyrics and charismatic
demeanor, Jason Aldean had the crowd on their feet chanting his lyrics as he finished
up the show before special guest Kid Rock took the stage.
Day Three
was filled with our third annual CMT Fan Social held at downtown hotspot, The Stage.
For the past few months, we’ve been giving fans clues through Facebook, MySpace
and Twitter for the location of our special event and thanks to all the fans
that came out, the show was a huge success. Hundreds of fans came for our
celebration that included performances by Carter Twins, Gloriana, Emerson Drive, Joey
& Rory, Holly Williams and Eli Young Band. The night wrapped up with press
conferences with Wynonna, Jason Micheal Carroll, Josh Turner and Trace Adkins. I’ve
never seen Trace Adkins in person until yesterday and I’ve got to say that a
water bottle never looked so small! Check out some more exclusive pictures from
the conference to see what I mean. Be sure to also check back here soon for a
wrap-up of the entire weekend.

Whew! The
first day of the CMA Music Festival was a world wind of country superstar
sightings, press conferences and live outdoor shows. Throughout the day, I was
lucky enough to attend a couple shows at the Riverfront stage as well as booth
signings in the Nashville
Convention Center. The
crowds came out in full swing to get a snapshot of their favorite artists
including Chuck Wicks, Jason Aldean and Carrie Underwood who each took the time
to sign autographs for adoring fans.
For many,
the latter part of the day did not turn out as expected with severe weather
postponing the Vault Stadium show at LP Field for quite a few hours. Tucked
away on the bottom floor of the stadium, I sat in on a press conference with
some of the biggest names in country music to snap a couple pictures and give
you the inside scoop on the latest news from each artist.
First up
for the media frenzy was Darius Rucker. Always calm and respectful, Rucker
nonchalantly spoke of his first experience at the festival and his move to
country music. “It’s really good to know that this thing that I’ve worked on
since ’86 that I finally got to do and it worked, that’s a really cool thing,”
spilled Rucker. He later gushed that he would wait in line to see Brad Paisley,
Carrie Underwood, Rascal Flatts and Toby Keith live. He finished by sharing
that his new “fun summer video” for “Alright,” which was filmed in Venice, will soon be
released.
The room lit
up with praise as Reba McEntire walked in next. A veteran in the country scene,
Reba answered each question with her usual charm. She shared her intense love
for her fans, especially those who have stayed devoted to her music for over 20
years. I was sort of pleasantly surprised with her response when asked what
makes her nervous -- not the large crowds or screaming fans, but the wardrobe.
“New outfit or new shoes get me nervous. I like to be comfortable and I like
security. My advice to new artists is to never wear new shoes,” confessed
McEntire.
With
paint-covered jeans, Brad Paisley also slipped in to answer a few questions. Paisley shared how his interesting wardrobe choice
correlates with his latest upcoming tour and album. Based on a painting of a
city, the album cover and tour, featuring Dierks Bentley and Jimmy Wayne, will
showcase an array of colors and effects including the artist wardrobes. “We’re
coming basically to paint your town and walk out there covered in it,” shared Paisley. He later admitted to coming down to the festival
before making it in the industry and how different it’s has become but has
still stayed “young and exciting.”
Other artists who were part of the press conference included Julianne
Hough, Chuck Wicks, Dierks Bentley, Rascal Flatts, Jimmy Wayne and Martina
McBride. Make sure to check back later for updates from Day Two of the festival
as well.

I think this is the start of a beautiful friendship between the CMA Music Festival and me. I can't wait for what the rest of the weekend has in store. Make sure to check back to our CMT MySpace blog all weekend long for full coverage of this year's events. It’s rare that a song can have the ability to bring out so many different emotional responses, but Taylor Swift’s new video, "The Best Day," makes me want to tearfully run to the phone and tell my mom that I love her. As a special Mother’s Day treat, Taylor Swift released a new video in honor of her own mom. Full of homemade videos, the video shows the special relationship between the Swift family while giving an inside look at Taylor’s childhood. Get a glimpse of the video and share your special mother-inspired memory.

I have to admit we do get a few perks here at CMT, sometimes even getting the pleasure of seeing country shows at the office. Last year’s favorite Can You Duet married couple, Joey & Rory came by to not only play a few songs for the staff but also give us a glimpse of their new video, “Play the Song.” Following up to their first highly-rated single, “Cheater, Cheater,” the new video keeps their playful, energetic side that was so lovable from their Duet days. Steering towards more traditional sounding country, the duo tackles the issue of music executives wanting to change both their image and music. Most songs that try to speak about an issue end up sounding depressing and bleak, however Joey & Rory manage to keep their song light-hearted and fun. How do you think their sophomore single compares to their first hit?

This year is going to better than ever, and I will definitely be rooting for country’s hottest new couple, Julianne Hough and Chuck Wicks. The best part is every week, CMT will have exclusive behind-the-scenes blogs from Julianne Hough herself. This week she shares about a certain unfortunate wardrobe malfunction. Oh, no, will it be another Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake incident? Check out the video to see what happened, and make sure to check back here every week to see a new video from Julianne!
