Greetings all
Just to remind you - next Wednesday we are having a party to celebrate the imminent release of our debut album! There will be live music from ourselves, alongside the phenomenal Broadcast 2000 and Dry The River, with tunes being spun by the good folk at Black Cab Sessions! Extreme merriment is promised, and we will be selling pre-release copies of our album at a special knock-down price, just for that evening!
The venue is Zigrid Underbelly on Hoxton Square, and it's quite a small place, so pre-booking tickets is a good idea. Click below to do that...
The record doesn't come out officially until the end of the month but the title track has been doing the rounds on the radio, and one review has already surfaced in Culture Deluxe, which you can read by clicking the quotation...
...one of the most brilliantly realised orchestral pop albums of the year. 9/10. Also - we're playing live on the Dexter Bentley Show tomorrow (Saturday 10th Oct), between 12-2pm on Resonance FM. We'll be performing 3 songs live on the show, and giving a short interview!
See you all next week for the party!

Howdy there! Just another reminder that we have our biggest headline show to date on Friday - at The Bush Hall. I don't know if you've ever been to Bush Hall, it's a lovely, lovely place and the evening will be a treat I'm sure - especially given the caliber of the support acts. It's also a HUGE place, too big for small fry like us really, so your support would be greatly appreciated!!
Some of you may know that we made a last minute appearance at Camp Bestival last weekend. It was BRILLIANT FUN! The journey down was traumatic though. Not only were we hung-over as hell, but the traffic was so bad, we were able to get out of the car and rehearse on the M3...
Thanks to Howard @ The Local for having us down at short notice.
We are also playing a special stage at Big Chill Festival, hosted by the folk at Black Cab Sessions, at which we're playing out of the back of a van! Think we're playing on the Sunday, so come and say hi if you're going.
Finally - our debut album is oh so near to completion, and will be released in the autumn. It's going to be called "Beyond Our Means" and there's another single (1,2,3...go!) coming soon which is now on our myspace page, and will be available to download on iTunes etc very soon. Very exciting!!
All the best for now

We are thoroughly looking forward to Sunday (30th Nov)...which is the Time Out recommended official launch party for our recent EP "Secretly". Entrance is free, and as there is a very special guest performing....who's identity cannot be revealed....you'll have to come down to find out...needless to say, it's one of our favourite performers and we're very very excited! We realise the EP came out last month, but better late that never! Not secret, but very special performances will also come from Magic Arm, Sons of Noel and Adrian and Dominic Moran. It genuinely is an awesome line up and we're privileged to have such superb support. It's an all-dayer, and they serve food, so come early to make sure you can squeeze in. Left With Pictures All Day EP Launch Party Sunday 30th Nov @ The Slaugthered Lamb, 34-35 Great Sutton Street, London EC1V 0DX 4pm - 11pm FREE ENTRY!
Here's the facebook event page - let us know if you're coming along!
In other news, we recently filmed a live set for the bandstand busking series. These guys have recorded busking sets by the likes of The Wave Pictures and Of Montreal, and it was great fun to do. Go here to see the full set, which also features us performing "Professional Help", "We Clutched", and an interview in which we talk all sorts of nonsense! Here, for your enjoyment, is our cover of Richard Thompson's "1952 Vincent Black Lightning".
..
Next week we are filming our set for the black cab session series...which we're very excited about. Should be up before Christmas.
Also, we are recording a live radio session next Saturday afternoon on London 104.4 Resonance FM. It's part of Dexter Bentley's Hello Goodbye show. We'll be playing 3 songs live in the studio and "Dexter" will be interviewing us. The show goes out live 12-1.30pm on Saturday 6th December. Non-Londoners can listen live online - so do join us for that.
All the very best, and see you on Sunday at The Slaughtered Lamb!

Hi all, hope you're well! First news, our new EP is now on iTunes and all the rest for those who enjoy their music digital!! It's also in these shops for those who prefer it physical... Rough Trade (London) Spillers Records (Cardiff) Piccadilly Records (Manchester) Norman Records (Leeds) We thought we'd collect together the reviews our EP has been receiving. Including a rather controversial one from Drowned in Sound! DiS journalist Daniel Ross wrote a very well written, thorough review...and gave the EP 8/10. When it appeared on DiS it had been savagely edited, and given 7/10 - prompting a (albeit minor!) backlash on the user comments board, notably from Daniel himself. Do weigh in with your own protests, always nice to be the centre of controversy!!! It's still a very good review, though it is badly edited; some of it doesn't even make sense. For those interested the full review is at the very bottom of this. But in the meantime.... ...see the DiS Secretly Review here and join the little debate!! Here are the others...click below to read the full articles...will add more as they appear... "How great is this? ...five tracks stuffed with beautiful harmonies, rustic instruments and Lenin references."
Tim Jonze - The Guardian
"Perhaps the master-stroke of this modest collection of songs is its unpredictability.. each passage in them is distinct from the others, helping to make this a consistently engaging, charming and memorable musical excursion. Keep an eye on these guys - the future's looking bright." Line of Best Fit - "Secretly" review
"...an enchanting stroke of chamber pop genius." Line of Best Fit - "Introducing" feature
"Like early Belle & Sebastian, fronted by Euros Childs, and gently exposed to jazz"
Time Out - no link for this, it was in the magazine!
"This is simply one of the nicest pieces I have been allowed to hear this year and even if you are of the R&B or Metallic persuasions I urge you to listen to what great English music can sound like." Music News.Com
elegantly crafted songs.... lovely arrangments - all swooping oohs and aahs and carefully stroked violins... a cracking little EP!" The Daily Growl
A gentle, life-affirming if awkward treat." Culture Deluxe

---
There are so many artists whose press releases nonchalantly fart out phrases such as 'classically trained' or 'baroque pop' or, maybe, 'channelling the majesty of Haydn's sturm und drang period' or something equally flaccid. On almost every single occasion, these claims are included to impress the reviewer and the listener, to foist upon them unjustly the idea that this particular record is that little bit brainier than most, that because these guys know the difference between exposition and development that their complex, terribly rewarding music is just the bollocks. On almost every single occasion, this is terrifyingly wrong, tiresome and, frankly, quite insulting to the listener. Let us judge for ourselves how brainy they are, we don't need to be told to listen out for the string arrangements. And you've use the word 'crescendo' incorrectly.
Left With Pictures are one of the very few examples of the tide turning right back on this rough maxim. A bendy hybrid of early classical chord shapes, very pure pop melodies and brilliant nuances, hilariously correct and satisfying in their deployment, they manage at all times to be terribly aware of how to fill the musical spaces. They can't really be described as a rock act or a folk act or, really, a pop act - they're just an ensemble. They use traditional instruments, but sensitively. The temptation when, y'know, doing one of those records where the singer stands at the front of patronised session musicians and conducts a song that really needs no conducting, is to just use 'an orchestra', 'a string quartet', 'some horns'. Left With Pictures use the right instruments to involve the listener with the right sound, to augment melodies, harmonies and lyrics, they don't just throw everything at it. The arrangements here are expert.
'We Clutched' is a soft tale told in rubato, gently teased into acceleration and finally settling into a dainty dance, all the time carefully letting us hear clarinet harmonies, double bass throbs and a lovely lyric. The chord progression is simple, functional even, but it's the variety of ways in which it is tweaked, the attention to detail in what we're allowed to hear that makes the whole thing special. Similarly, 'Boats' is a tiny miracle of escalations and descents, of fine and pleasingly florid instrumental harmonies and another lovely lyric. I'd never really noticed before that Left With Pictures' lyrics are very poetic, idiosyncratic and conversational without being ridiculous and, at times, quite moving. There's nothing at all bad about a line like "I can't push this boulder from out of the door, could you help me please?"
To bring this all refreshingly into context, it seems that Left With Pictures will have to be a pop band for the sake of practical things like record labels, venues to play live at and the internet, but they know what they are really. They are an ensemble, some musicians and writers and composers that painstakingly arrange their pieces. A more complex description than that would undermine their excellence.
8/10
