SO ELATED: God Lives In Simple Folk Songs

As a marker of a new musical milestone, Ben Thomas is now recording as So Elated. A love of music with soul and creative production are displayed as the mood shifts slightly throughout the new self-titled, So Elated (to be released January 13, 2009). Hushed dark notes give way to a predominately forward looking vibe. The first song alone begins distant and distorted, then turns intimate and contemplative, pensive, elated, nostalgic and concludes with a memorable, guitar-groove-based outro, all in 3:25.

So Elated is an apt moniker for Ben Thomas’ latest work. These songs in the hands of a darker soul, in a darker key, could be another ride altogether. The lyrics of Ben Thomas, dark as the topics may be, are hopeful. Driven by tempo, vocal layering and harmonies that uplift the mood, there’s too much melody to sink into darkness!

By the third song, “Not Complete”, biting acoustic guitars and tight, measured drumming pull the listener into well crafted machine, setting the stage for an album colored by textured vocals and other subtle yet creative production elements.  So Elated pulls off the feat of presenting a well sequenced and very cohesive album while still displaying diverse song intros and instrumentation.

I recognize that not everyone believes there’s a God or hears from God the same way, but I like to think God lives in these songs.  Sure, they’re simple folk songs… but just like sunsets and Mozart and tiramisu, I think God can speak through them in ways we can’t even comprehend.  We think we created something with lyrical and sonic depth to it.  Something fresh and alive and something that grows richer with repeated listens.    –Ben Thomas

On “Viral (The Incapable Rival)” a song that “is a tribute to the people who have come out of environments of oppression; a battle cry against the spirit of fear which strips us of our capacity to be innovative and expressive,” voices exuberantly work together in a tonal and winking style reminiscent of Ween’s country work, Wilco, Steely Dan, or Iron and Wine. So Elated is a new breed, like an unexpected acoustic set from Radiohead or when a genre is re-imagined by a top flight producer. Think Rick Rubin’s ability to edit and add life to an album, artist and genre.

The songs are a collaboration of Ben Thomas and producer and percussionist Mark Mazurek. Along with the help from fellow band members Luke Harris (Upright Bass, Mandolin), John Dudich (Guitar, Vocals) and Matt Brennan (Percussion), the album presents a cohesive sound with poignant lyrics. Themes of honesty and expectation remain to the finale, “Exit Door,” as the “classic apocalyptic, death-ward gazing, tombstone printable epilogue.”  From the first track to the last, “So Elated” offers a true-to-life manifesto of unconditional love, interdependence and hope.

This CD is a thoughtful, fun ride.
After 38 minutes, you may want an encore. (They do tour!)

Q:  Why should someone go see a So Elated show?

A:
As a music fan, I feel like I’m getting a special privileged position
of hearing directly from an artist in a live setting.
It’s as close as I can usually get to sitting with that artist in their living room.
I get to bring my expectations and life experiences to the show
and have them meet up and intermingle with the artists expectations and life experiences.
Every show counts because its a different combination of people and artists
and experiences floating around the room.

As an artist, I feel it my responsibility to let people in a bit…
to make them feel like this is the first and last show I’ll ever play.

“The Recovery” Review (4 stars) - Phantom Tollbooth
“…Thomas was recently named as one of the top up and coming independent artist by “Christianity Today”, and that honor is well deserved. The Recovery is a musical treasure chest for the fan of alt-country/folk rock fan. At moments, Thomas’ sounds can remind you of amped-up Bright Eyes or Rocky Votolato without the gloomy perspective on life. When you combine that with the sounds of Wilco, Radiohead, and Derek Webb… Thomas’ first full-length is an independent success setting the stage for a bright future.”

Independent Artists to Watch - Christianity Today
“…The Recovery marks his first full-length studio effort, and it’s a good one. Self-written, produced, and mostly performed by Thomas, it’s an album filled with dichotomies. The sound is melodic and approachable, yet the instrumentation is often quite progressive, mixing acoustic guitars with atmospheric effects and aggressive drum fills. …lends credence to that belief that indie artists are the last bastion for creative songwriting.”

The new Ben Thomas album
The Bewildering Light: Faces at the Manger
available December 9th, 2007.

"The Bewildering Light: Faces at the Manger" is an attempt to reconcile some of our Christmas celebration with the reality of the events that took place 2,000 years ago. Part hesitant, part hopeful, part mournful, part celebratory.
We hope that you find comfort in tension.
Merry Christmas.

Dear Friends -

Just one month ago, if you'd told me that I'd be releasing a full length Christmas album THIS YEAR, I would have laughed called you a silly, silly person.

Well, silly people... in three weeks we've managed to conceptualize, write, arrange, mix and master what I'd easily call be my favorite record of my career. I've never been too inclined to drive around listening to myself, but find myself actually wanting to do that with this one. I really like it and I think you will too.

The album was recorded at Wheatland Salem Church in Naperville over six short days. We tracked most of it in the traditional sanctuary of the church, complete with gorgous sounding wooden ceilings and spacious sounding grand piano. Its a straight-forward acoustic record featuring some of the talent you may have heard at recent live shows... lots of Luke Harris' upright bass and John Dudich's skilled guitar. Julie Wachter lent her voice to a few songs and Sorcha Barr added some flute to the mix. Shawn Hubbard and Pete Brennan helped engineer and mix the project. The gorgeous artwork (as shown above) for the album was done in by the talented Pete Griffith. At one point there's even a 100-person choir... it was truely a team effort.

The record is made up of ten tracks. Five of which are newly written songs of mine and five of which are new renditions of traditional Christmas carols. The project came out of a concept developed between a few of us on the staff at Wheatland Salem and the songs will be offered in conjunction with our "Faces at the Manger" message series for Advent. During the series, we will be discussing several characters in the Gospel events surrounding the birth of Christ. Each of the songs I've written attempts to dive into the personal lives of these characters... in particular how their lives were turned upside-down by the wonderful but bewildering news brought to them by angels.

New Ben Thomas Songs
  Demos available for free download
In February of this yearI set a goal of writing one new song per week untilour baby arrived. Defying her father's tendency toprocrastinate, Lucy arrived ahead of schedule, givingme about 8 new songs. Between these and othersI've written since then I'm terribly excited about allthe new material. I'm not one for drivingaround listening to my own music, but I'll have toadmit to doing that with these songs!

Here are three of them I uploaded onto my Myspacesite. Please keep in mind that these aredemosand not a finished product. I played everythingon them myself (yes, even the sloppy drum parts)and recorded them in the fancy/dingy/new "DeliveryRoom" studio.

Hope you enjoy!

Greetings friends!

Just wanted to let you all know I'll be playing at Borders Book and Music in Wheaton, IL this coming Saturday, February 25th at 8PM.  It's been a few months since my last west-suburban Chicago show and will likely be a few months again until the next so I'd love to catch up.

Things have been a wild ride recently but a good one.  The kind where you can't tell where the next hill or dip is or when your stomach is going to take a bad turn.  But you don't care.  You're just enjoying the ride.

My wife Joy is expecting (a baby!) and due in April so a few weeks ago I set a goal of writing and demo-ing one new song per week until the baby is born.  I'm at week four right now and keeping up.  If all goes well I should have ten or eleven new songs out of this.

In addition to my own writing I've been hard at work producing a record for singer-songwriter Julie Wachter.  I'm a big fan of hers and thrilled to be working with this.

"Hey" and "What's Up" to all my new friends I met while doing Young Life and Wesley Woods camps this winter.  I hope to see some of you guys this weekend or soon thereafter.

Another "Hey" and "What's Up" to all my new myspace friends.  What a strange yet addictive new way to communicate!  If you haven't yet check out my myspace site at www.myspace.com/benthomasonline.

Sip it down
Soak it in
Spill it out

Many blessings,
Ben Thomas
