Hey beautifuls,

After feasting in France for a week, we got back to Berlin last night..
the most romantic, emotional and beautiful New Years eve ever for me ..thought we were going to have a quiet one in as we just got back from the airport at 21h but we went for a walk at 22h to see if anything was going on...we went up to Mauer park
and the fireworks had begun a little..the air was crispy and we stopped in this lovely cafe and had a waffle and a green tea and then at a quarter to 12, we went walking again
and at midnight, the fireworks just went beserk.  I think we were in the best place in the world for bringing in the new year.. never felt so exhilerated by or close to the fireworks.
 Berlin was just simply CRAZY
and WILD..
seriously dangerous
and exciting
we ended up on a crossroads beside a big church
and there were people on every corner all down each of the 4 roads sending them off... sky was full of blasting stars and sound..terrifying and beautiful..nobody controlling the flow, nothing official..
and the church bells didn't stop ringing and people were cheering from rooftops
and I felt I was with the love of my life and we have begun a family..and there were
non stop explosions and sparkles..and the smell and smoke..like being in the opposite of a warzone but feeling the danger..like a vibrant joyzone..
mental
beautiful
crying and laughing in the new year.

We woke up the the ground covered in white and all oustside the window was a Winter picture glass dream..an incredible start..

Have a great 2008

 Hello the world,
we have paid for our beloved Hannes the van to be destroyed..sniff sniff..but the renting of cars has actually improved the quality of our lives because they are so much faster so less travelling time and less exhaustion.. we have not been able to work out how to link the mp3s yet as the shop is down on the site so I have been emailing them to anyone who made a donation.. and thanks to all who have been donating..(reccomendation for donation is 2 to 3 euros and we will send you songs..every euro helps..
Our gig in Vienna organised by the VSA was brilliant ..lots of people, great sound and we got to hang out with lots of other cool and friendly bands too which is always an eye opener.. and a sharing of lifestyle..we all complained about the hard indie slog of life and then celebrated about how lucky we are to be living with the music.
The VSA are the Vienna Songwriting Association. Their belief of what is songwriter is is much the same as mine..as in The Velvet Underground to Tom Waits to Kate Bush to Nick Drake to Peaches to Beck to The Flaming Lips to Radiohead to Carole King to Joni Mitchell, Dylan and on and on..and any music that has a song within it..it has been so refreshing to deal with promoters who are all about the music and organised so well that playing is a pleasure..
and we are back in in Berlin until Thursday when we leave for Italy..which we are looking on as a food, driving and playing holiday that won´t cost us anything..
:) and as always thanks for your encouragement and support..it really makes a huge difference as sometimes, it can be very disillusioning when nothing seems to come back after all the hard work we do..and we live to know people actually enjoy the music! ;)

For the moment, I am in my 24th week of pregnancy and all is going well..we are hoping for a drummer but there will be no force feeding of music involved..we hope to continue touring a few months after the baby is born in March once the conditions are right.

Ok,

Arts Councils donate for Art..

Bursaries and awards do the same.

Critically acclaimed as my music is, I have applied to all of the above numerous times without success..

looked on as ´too commercial´ for arts councils and ´too something..or not  something enough for labels´.

I have received critics praise and fan encouragement for years now. This does not translate to financial support though that is neccessary to get the music out in to the world.

People ask why another album doesn´t come out so soon after the last.

It has nothing to do with not writing the music. It is because I believe things should be of a certain quality and in order to record and package music, it costs money..lots of money---and then to get it out in to the world...more money..

Money money money..

I don´t make any money from my first two releases Creation(1999) and Staros(2002) due to my absolute naivety(stupidity) in signing a many-page management deal that basically said that I am accountable for any costs that this person runs up in relation to me before I see any return. We couldn´t afford to hire a lawyer at the time to overlook the contract.

A label was set up, the releases put out in Ireland and the US. Money wasn´t available for any kind of real promotion but still the costs this person ran up were so high(a third of their office rent and phone bills, their music magazine ´research´costs, taxis, dinners for meeting people to talk about me, ´presents´´for people who had put me up on tour and presents I didn´t know about such as Christmas presents for pr people who had done a job for us for a few weeks..as well as the actual recording and release of Staros and Creation.. (I had personally paid for some of the recording of Creation though, from money I borrowed as part of a demo plan at the time)...and on and on..blah blah blah..)..This was all in ´good faith´. My trust was pure..and stupid. To sort through this story with lawyers would take years and lots of money and energy so I just left it and kept living and writing..

My unborn baby will be in college before I might see a return. I am not bitter.I still trust people but I try to make sure that I am covered in case things go wrong. I made choices. Life is not easy and we have to make the most of what we have and try to give something good back to the world. We, in the ´western´world are the priveledged ones.

Last year, 4 years after Staros was released, two of my brothers convinced me that I should take out a bank loan to record some of the new music I had been writing during this time. They helped me to find a guarantor so the loan would be possible.

I have really done my best and with the loan I took for Really Really Do, all of the musicians were paid(except me and Fabien)..the co-producer was paid, the studio was paid. The photographer was paid, the printers were paid, the website designer was paid(www.ninahynes.com), the album cover-art and t-shirt designer was paid but is owed some more. Promotion in Ireland only was done. The T-shirts were bought and sold, tours were booked. The loan was exhausted at this stage.

Fabien and I have lived on the merchandise sales at gigs and from the gigs in the last 7 months, trying to pay money in to our personal loans that we took out to go to college as well as the loan for the album plan along the way.

I duplicated 5000 copies of Really Really Do and bought a van to tour so it was a good plan working on the lowest level but working all the same until the van died..we just had no plan B!

I am totally reassessing my life and while there is no turning back the clock, now is the time to make a change ...for real this time..just have to figure out HOW!

Along with two others, Fabien is in the process of setting up an amazing recording studio in an old soviet radio station studio in Berlin. We are very excited about this.

It feels strange and weird asking people to donate when one doesn´t directly give something in return though. We are art, we are not a charity.

Right now, we are on the way to the studio  to mix the song ´Jesus´ so we can offer it for the donations so it doesn´t feel so much like begging for our art ´man´..if 10,000 paid 1 or 2 euro for the song, that would make us enough money to start paying off the loans and we could continue to do what we do best.

Lots of people at the gigs in the last while have asked for a recording of this song.

It was recorded by David Odlum during the Really Really Do sessions and will be mixed by Fabien Leseure and myself.

I refuse to be an underdog and this story is not so unusual.

have a good day,

Nanu nanu,

Nina

To buy the song go to www.ninahynes.com and donate what you feel. The song will not be up until a couple of days though..will let you know once it is up.

Hi the world,

On the way to our Irish tour, about 800kms from Berlin, Hannes, our beloved van died. We have had to rent an estate car to carry us and our gear. We have finished our Irish and UK tours and our Paris gig and have just arrived back to Berlin. The van's engine is totally dead and unfixable and they are charging us daily for keeping it until we pay to destroy it.

It has been pretty full on and intense. For now, we are trying to decide what way we can tour in the future, whether to try to eventually buy a new van or to keep renting or to stop touring for a while.

Thanks so much to Phantom FM for getting on the case so quickly and spreading the word..

in other news, my baby is growing nicely at 23 weeks now..all healthy, hard round belly and glow.

*You want to help?*

Well.....We need to pay back the money we borrowed to help us out of this catastrophe and we have a Vienna gig and an Italian tour coming up and without our own van, the renting of one has complicated things financially. So we have set up a donation appeal here to help out with the touring.

Overall, the recent tour was great artistically and we really appreciate those of you who came and enjoyed the gigs and gave us great feedback along the way. This kind of personal encouragement really makes a difference to an indie artist without any other support.

Also, if 10000 people send 50 cents, that is €5000 and if you are not in a position to help financially but you like our music and want us to keep playing around, spread the word about the music and thanks..

Take care and snuggle up if your country is cold. Enjoy the warmth, if it is warm..
We are hoping to keep the donation link as a permanent option and to offer unreleased and rare mp3s as a thankyou.

Nina
