Hi everyone, Our library blog has a new address! Although we sometimes copy a blog entry into MySpace, you'll find a lot more going on over at the official blog. Finally, our blog supports RSS feeds, so you can subscribe to it and see the updates as we post 'em! Right now, the blog is called LMU Library News, but we're thinking that it will be more than news. We'll talk about what goes on behind the scenes at the new William H. Hannon Library, we'll have features about the people who work here so you can get to know who's who, and we'll tell you about new resources that are especially interesting or unusual. LMU Library BlogCome have a look... and expect more to come, soon! Ken - LMU Librarian

So, you bring your laptop to the library. You write something up, or you find an article online, and you want to print it. Until now, you've had to trudge over to our computers, copy your file over and print from there. No more! Now, you can print wirelessly from your Mac or Windows laptop. All it takes is a one-time installation of printer software. See the instructions here. If you have questions, drop us a note here on MySpace or contact me here. As always, the LMU librarians welcome your feedback on wireless printing or anything else library-related! - Ken, LMU librarian

LibX is a free web browser add-on that gives you instant access to the world of resources available from the LMU library.
Once you install LibX, you will be able to search LMU's library catalog directly from the LibX toolbar in your browser. Even better, you'll also be able to select text on any web page and right-click to search for the selected text in LMU's resources (books, journal titles, article titles).
LibX also adds "magic buttons" to sites such as Google and Amazon to link you right back into resources available here at the library, or through our web site.
For a link to the LibX download, and instructions on how to install and use LibX, see our guide:

What fits your mood? If classical is the answer, did you know that the library subscribes to a website that lets you stream classical music of your choice? Take a look at the Classical Music Library. Search for your favorite composer, browse a particular genre, or try your luck with a random choice. Classical Music Library is available to LMU students, faculty and staff wherever there is an Internet connection – just be ready to enter your OneCard number if you're off campus!

Want to take a movie break? Are you interested in recent hits, classic flicks or documentaries? Once a month, our Media & Reserves Department issues a list of video titles newly available at the Von der Ahe Library. May's new titles include No Country for Old Men, a collection of Spike Lee joints, classic Marx Brothers comedy, and documentaries on subjects such as climate change and immigration. Take a look at this month's list and see what there is to see at your library! Only faculty and staff can take videos outside the library, but you're welcome to kick back and watch a movie in one of our comfortable group viewing rooms. Enjoy!

You can't miss it: construction of the new William H. Hannon library is underway. This isn't just a shiny new building – it's one that is being designed and built with sustainability and the environment in mind. LMU is pursuing LEED certification through the U.S. Green Building Council. LEED certification is an independent verification that a building meets standards in five areas: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality. Find out more at the LEED website!

The LA As Subject Forum’s 3rd annual Archives Bazaar is set for October 25 at the Davidson Center at USC. The Huntington Library had generously played host for the initial bazaars but due to heavy crowds this year we will be moving to a much larger venue. You may not recall but last year we again featured exhibits from local historical collections, museums, and archives. Attendees browse collections, schedule research visits, and consult with experts from the Autry Museum, All the Saints of the City, Braun Research Library, Beverly Hills Public Library, Bison Archives, California African American Museum, California Council for the Humanities, California State Universities, Center for the Study of Political Graphics, Chinese Historical Society of Southern California, County of Los Angeles Resource Centers, Eighth & Wall Inc., Fairchild Photos, Filipino American Library, GAZIN Photo Archive, Getty Center, Huntington Library, Historical Society of Long Beach, Los Angeles Public Library History Department, Workman and Temple Homestead Museum, Japanese American National Museum, La Senora Research Institute, LA84 Foundation, Libraries of the Claremont Colleges, Lightcatcher, Loyola Marymount University, Mayme A. Clayton Library, Occidental College, ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives, Pico Rivera Heritage Society, Santa Monica Library, Seaver Center and Natural History Museum, Shildler Collection of Southern California Ephemera, Society of California Archivists, Southern California Genealogical Society, Southern California Library for Social Research, St. Vincent’s Medical Center, UCLA Film & Television Archive and USC Special Collections. The winner of the Von der Ahe Library’s 2008 Undergraduate Research Award contest with a first prize of $750 is Andrea Ryken, a senior majoring in History and English. The two honorable mentions of $250 each go to Stephen Blair, a freshman majoring in Classics, and Joseph Spaniol, a sophomore majoring in Biology.
Each entry included the research project or paper, an essay explaining how the student researched information and used the library, a bibliography, and a letter of nomination from the faculty member who had assigned the paper or project.
The Awards Committee – Dr. Philippa Drennan, Biology professor and chair of the Library Advisory Committee; Dr. Kirstin Noreen, Art History professor; Glenn Johnson-Grau, Collection Development Librarian; Jamie Hazlitt, Reference Librarian; and Pamela Clarke, Cataloging Librarian and chair of the Undergraduate Research Awards Committee – chose these entries because they demonstrate advanced information literacy practices, use of multiple collections and services in the library, and clear evidence of significant learning.
Dean Kristine Brancolini will present the awards at a ceremony and reception on Tuesday, April 8, 2008 at 3:45 in the Von der Ahe Library atrium.
Reception: 3:30 to 5:00 p.m.
All faculty, staff and students are invited.
